Sounds good to me. It's a nice solid name, but someone might come up with something that's catchier.

Actually when I first posted that I went to check on the OP to see if she's been around lately... hasn't been since Apr 19... harrumph. Does anyone know her outside the BW Forum?
I'd like any title harkening to DA Dwarfdom really, but "Dwarven Assembly" rules out most dwarves, given their caste status, particularly those pesky Dusters- that I like the most. More inclusive might be "Delving the Deep Roads: Dwarves and Allies." Or something. Like I said, I don't actually care, and anything's better than "I'm a Dwarf and I Need Support!"
Got a Q you guys probly know. Is Bianca ever a powerful ranged weapon? I mean, the crafted bows I make always seem way better, so when I bring Varric I always have to wonder whether he's just tagging along ineffectually, chugging all the heals. I just got a bunch of T4 schematics upgrades for parts of Bianca from the DLCs, but haven't tried them out yet, so maybe this won't be an issue anymore, but still- it's somewhat heartbreaking to keep seeing him die constantly and quickly like he did with me in DA2. I wanted to bring Varric to Descent to see if he interacts with the main couple NPCs or gives any insight, particularly at the end, but I'm saving that for next playthrough because it's one of the toughest areas. I went with two elves, a human, and a Cole first time through, but I'll be a bit disappointed if...

The fact that there's a Dwarf Support Thread just absolutely lifts my little dwarven heart.
@Bhryaen, IDK about Bianca specifically but with proper armor upgrades and accessories plus some skill tree management, Varric has proven to be a pretty tough trooper in most my playthroughs. The thing I've found is you have to be a little more micro-managing of him in most areas that can usually be left up to auto stuff for other characters, since even an upgraded Bianca isn't as powerful as other bow options. Other characters you can slap some ugly armor on and hand them the most powerful weapon for their class and let them go for it. Varric needs some direction, but after that he tends to hold his own pretty well. (Oddly enough he's usually the one still alive by the time my whole party is down).

k, gotcha, Remki. I was traveling with Varric regularly during the first half of the game, but it seemed like he wasn't doing much other than staying alive (and only due to me fighting his AI), and when I checked out the stats on Bianca it seemed I knew why. When I'm not playing an archer he may be a lot less "the other archer," and I'll have much better equipment for him early on due to the Nug thingy. I gave him stealth abilities that helped him too.
Another Q: is there a Scout Harding fan thread? There've been a number of "Why no Harding romance?" threads, but no thread just about her, and I've got a slew of great screenies of her. Fixin' to make a thread if there isn't one already.
Lace: "So... how do I look in front of a slain dragon? Pretty awesome, right? Yeah, I did it."
Inqmeister: "Uh... I was there. You didn't do it."
Lace: "Oh, come on. Why do you gotta spoil the fun?"

Since I will never not take Varric everywhere, even on Nightmare, I've gotten a bit better at playing him. Bianca is annoying to upgrade. I've occasionally just handed him two daggers (although obviously you still need to babysit him a bit, since the AI has a distressing urge to play 2h rogues like would-be warriors that try to tank with their face). If you direct him yourself, especially with enemy swarms, Varric can help out a lot with elemental mines and the tripmine and poisoned weapons. He needs to be in range for his mines, though, and the AI doesn't understand how to use these, either. However, some of his artificer stuff makes him decent support because it gives passive advantages to the whole party (And Take Them Down & Tricks of the Trade). Generally, he should also be carrying as much stuff as possible that gives him extra crit chances and stamina upgrades, so he can spam his archer abilities if he has Bianca (Leaping Shot, Full Draw, etc.).
Sadly, Varric doesn't have a lot of extra dialogue in Descent, as far as I have seen. A few comments on what Harding says about Orzammar. Maybe he has if your Inquisitor isn't a dwarf?

Can't say I'm surprised about the content-skimpiness for dwarquisitors/Varric in Descent (of all places), but OK. Still a great run- my favorite place for scenery in the game so far. Lyrium veins (the regular kind) look way better than in DAO.
You can put daggers on Varric??!! Well, there's failing to think outside the box for you. I totally just assumed DAI was like DA2 where Bianca was wed to Varric's grip. That may be the way to get him to use the mines better (since he'd be in range more often)? I'll remember what you said on the next playthrough when I'm playing my 2H dwarf since Varric will be there the whole time. This first game I was trading companions based on whoever seemed the most area-specific (Varric for Hissing Wastes for the dwarven ruins, etc.), but now I see I miss a lot of good, unexpected commentary that way, so it'll be Varric the whole way.
Bhryaen, there's this one: http://forum.bioware...=scout harding

Yes, I looked over the old Lacey thread, seeing how dated it was, and couldn't decide if I should make another one- had to sleep on it. I have the feeling it would only get so much traction before meeting the same disappearing act. But the OP of that thread was from before game release, and it wasn't updated, so there's definitely a place for a new one that has a link to her song on YouTube as well, romance mentions, and her involvement in the DLCs, plus any fanfiction or fanart that's now out there. People probably don't read more than the first two pages (and last two) of long threads anyway, so it'd be better to get all the good stuff at the start of the thread.
Then I was thinking about our ideas for a new title of this thread. Maybe it's better to circle the wagons more and make a new dwarf thread instead of dividing up dwarf material and making it all float. It could have all the Scout Harding goodies in the OP as well as anything else dwarfy-related. At the very least you'd have an OP (and title) you'd have a say with. The OP of this thread is essentially "well, I guess there isn't one of these threads, so... here, whatever." Nothing dwarf-enthusiast about it. And I only just started playing DAI a month ago (waiting for bugs to be sorted out first), so I'll be here a while in and out when you want an OP tweak. When I get into an rpg, I get sorta loyal, particularly when there's this much content yet to explore. Plus we'd have an OP that has a dwarfy avatar for once!
Anyway I will if you guys want, but it means abandoning this thread, so... I mean, I would put a link to it in the OP, but still. A lot of history here. Up to youse guys if you think you'd prefer that. Could be a lot of fun, particularly a combination dwarf/Harding thread. That original "Little Package of Murder" thread was pretty funny- actually read every page of a long thread for once. Dwarf fans seem to have the best sense of humor. ![]()
Again though- up to you guys, not going to do anything of the sort without the sense that it's what DAI dwarf fans want.
On new titles I thought of some refinements:
"Delving the Deep Roads: All Things Dwarfy (and this means YOU, Lacey Harding)"
Or a combo: "From the Assembly to the Deep Roads: etc."

I am Ok with changing the name of the thread, although I have nothing against "dwarf support thread" as I never took it in the sense of "I play a dwarf I need support" but rather in the sense of "lets support the dwarves of DA because we ain't that many to play them".
I'd rather have a short name for the thread so I'll support Tishina proposition. In case here are a few propositions of my own.
Delving Deep : the dwarven community
Stone Halls of the Dwarfs( in game title of a book by Genetivi)

I'm opposed to giving up this thread just because of its longevity. The fact the thread has lasted over a year and is approaching 300 pages shows how dedicated some dwarf fans are (a few of us have been here pretty continuously since its creation.) I don't think any other similar thread has had nearly the activity (only those for individual companions for the most part, plus maybe the Tevinter thread.) I think that's important to keep visible.
I actually don't see a problem with The Dwarven Assembly because "Assembly" doesn't have to be restricted to the one in Orzammar. But I'm certainly not wedded to it as long as whatever we decide is short, reasonably tasteful, and instantly recognizable. We may or may not get the name changed, but if it does, those of us who have been and will be here for the long haul will probably have to live with for good. As much as I love Harding, I don't see any reason to add her to the name of the thread explicitly: I don't know that she gets more discussion than several other dwarven NPCs.

Oh, and on the name "Dwarf Support Thread"... There was a lot of hostility (and still is from some people) to dwarves being included because it was perceived as "wasting" resources. The "support" had mostly to do with this being a relatively safe place where we could talk about our love of dwarves and our dwarven IQs without (usually) much harassment and could help each other out when someone did harass us.

Good ideas in here, keep 'em coming. The "master race" of the previous thread did make me laugh, too. It really annoyed some non-dwarven players back then, lol. =D
And I'm fine either way with keeping this thread or making a new one. I do see us losing history if we make a new thread, but we'd also gain the first page being a trove of good dwarf information/references. Maybe we'd need to make a list of stuff we'd want on the front page in order to be comfortable with the idea of a new thread. Also I think we'd need to contact a moderator ahead of time about changing threads because they won't know which is THE thread and will lock one or the other to avoid duplicates. I'm only saying based on what I've seen happen in other fan threads, that's all.
If we ever get a serious dwarf romance, one of the best thread titles to use is "Romancing the Stone: (Insert LI name)"

Finally got Thoryn completly "dwarfyquppied" thanks to the Descent. The only complain I have is the lacking backpart on the Revered Defender armor. Purely aesthetic complain though, since dwarves never run away and therefore don't need an armored back anyway!

But it's a new day! Harding has lent dwarves a bit more, erm, stature. Whatever the predictions about a dwarven LI in DA4- and they certainly look better now than during the dark days of DA2- there is some more general positivity toward dwarves in DA now due to Harding's popularity. We don't have to live with the "wasted resources" complaint anymore!
But, OK. I hear ya's. I just get irked at an OP that's not particularly dwarf-centric or interesting to folks that might otherwise warm to the dwarves if they had a better welcome to the "support group..." and which can't be meddled with. The other "fan" threads all have relatively active OP's that throw out a huge welcome mat with links, fan art, pics, lore expositions... you know- fun stuff. Even some pretty obscure NPCs have some pretty rich OP's. It's probably too much to get a "mass" migration to a new thread, but I certainly think we deserve better that what we're getting here. And a link to this thread would be prominent in the new OP, plus the whole "Assembly" aspect would seem a bit more recognizable when the OP is reflecting the Assembly's will.
I'm not moving. The only problem right now is an inability to change the name of the thread. Why give up the continuity and history we have here? Yeah, that's the biggest issue for myself proposing it, despite loving the idea: I'm a returning dwarf fan who's been absent quite a while. I kept piping up on the DAO dwarf thread to keep it active, but it didn't help much to keep it percolating. I think I'd do a great job of "hosting" a new DAI dwarf thread, but it would probably be more fitting for more of a veteran to start one. Still, there are advantages to such a new thread, one being that we actually could change the title as we wish. I just haven't been in this thread (or DAI) long enough to become wed to this one, so it's easier for me to consider.
As to "Dwarven Assembly," I've warmed to that myself now that you mention it's not necessarily the Orzammar Assembly. In our Assembly Dusters are dwarfple too. ![]()

Sorry- can't stop loving the idea of a new thread- ideas keep on coming to me. Don't worry- I'll stop nagging after a while... maybe... if you're lucky... ![]()
I mean, doesn't it sound fantasitcal if we all planned it ahead of time, contacted the moderators in advance like Gilsa suggests, hammered out (
) all the wording and details to get it right first, everyone getting a chance to pitch in, dwarfbrain-storming together, maybe even voting? Now that's an Assembly! I'm a revolutionary at heart, admittedly.
And it could start with something like:
"Yes, it's the loving reboot of the beautyful original dwarfiness thread *link*. Now home of the Thedas-wide Dwarven Assembly with honorary membership of dwarf Wardens and Inquisitors everywhere, plus the legendary Master Scout Lace Harding, the inimitable author and Bianca-wielder Varric Tethras, veteran darkspawn-bane and Legion of the Dead Legionnaire Sigrun(... etc...) and even you, Oghren, you rascally, sexy devil."
And best of all we wouldn't be the "oh, yeah, and the dwarves thread" thread. More like "Gimme a D! Gimme a W! Gimme a..." Oh, OK, party-poopers...
Just for that another shot of Lacey:
Bhryaen: "Why so somber, Lacey? Where's that cocky grin you usually have? No way life can get you down!"
Lace Harding: "Well, for one, there's no dwarf thread on the BW forum that really shows off us dwarves the way we should be."
OK, she didn't exactly say that... but...

The dwarves NPC has always been the fan favorite of Dragon Age. It's just Harding has been added to the roster of dwarven favors. People loved Oghren, which is why he was brought over to Awakening (I wasn't a fan of his Awakening's role). Everyone loved Sigrun and Dagna, and there are people still waiting for Sigrun to return. We have Shale, a former dwarf, and people love her to death. Then finally we have the Chest hair (Varric), who won the position for the best rogue companion back when Bioware did that poll.
Don't get me wrong, I like Harding, but I don't think she is the face that symbolize the rise of the dwarves. I would support a dwarf LI, but I usually prefer the interracial romance for my characters, if that choice is available. It adds more drama for the couple's relationship to me. I love my dwarves, so I wouldn't let a LI option restriction stop me from playing them. ![]()
