Mod compatibility issues can be annoying! I know Trespasser has some issues, but I thought (from my limited perusal, I used to be more into the modding scene than I am now) most of it was resolved. What mods are giving you problems with it? Or is it just that you need different mod set-ups for each character?

What mods are giving you problems with it? Or is it just that you need different mod set-ups for each character?

The mod that unlocks the Cullen romance to dwarves and qunari (Vetra) won't run with a couple of others that I was using with Zhenya. The problem in Descent (did I accidentally say Trespasser? Sorry) isn't a mod problem: I actually removed all the mods once and restarted Descent entirely and still had the problem. When I reached the last big battle on the first level (the ogre and a bunch of others) and clicked on the one body to get the cutscene and the key to the next level, the game locked up and I couldn't get past that point. Eventually someone offered to let me send them a game save of Volya, play through that scene, and send it back to me, which worked. No more problems. This is a point in the game where a lot of people have had the same problems, but the "fixes" that worked for some other people did not work for me. My daughter's (professional) opinion is that they probably didn't test the DLC with all the graphics that the game is supposed to be compatible with, because my current graphics card is older but within the game requirements (I meet the optimal requirements for almost everything else.)

Which gave me the reason to upgrade the card to a much better one this year (my daughter built my machine and I upgrade something about once a year.) I have the new card, but I'm waiting for a friend to come over and supervise me while I do it. Frankly, it's easier than trying to get through the almost non-existent tech support which kept telling me to try the "fixes" that I'd already found and tried. <_< If this doesn't help, I dunno what I'm going to do because I love Descent, and I'm not too happy about only getting one PT (and with a non-dwarf at that.)

Oh I just assumed it was Trespasser related because of all the compatibility issues there, now I get it!

That's really annoying. I wonder if there's a way you can mod the game to add that key to one of the existing shops. I know you can add DLC items to shops, but I don't know how it would affect that cutscene + the quest triggers since it's a quest item.

I hope your new card solves the issue and you don't have to think of annoying solutions that involve you missing out on experiencing that DLC or that cutscene. If it doesn't though and you want someone to play through that on your save and send it back to you again, feel free to message me, I'd be happy to help!

No, I think I did say Trespasser, lol. But hopefully I can work things out and enjoy the dwarf content with my dwarves :P

I actually expect more dwarf stuff in DA4 because dwarves had a greater role in Tevinter than any other surface nation.

My male Cadash romanced Josephine, but I'm also a fan of M!Cadash x Cassandra.

I really like when the love interests mention that the Inquisitor is a dwarf in the context of the romance.

Yes, I can't wait! Ambassadoria... Proving Grounds... Varric's extended family ... I need it all, and I need it now.

Oh, me too! I know Alistair and Sera mention it (the latter several times 'cause she thinks you're so cute). And Blackwall talks with you about your Carta past and Dorian talks about dwarves in Tevinter, though I'm not sure if either of those are romance-specific conversations.

It makes it feel less like you're playing Human Lite and the LIs are studiously ignoring your dwarfiness.

Cass also mentions the Inquisitor's dwarfiness a few times. :D

Neither of those (Blackwall and Dorian) are romance specific, but I do enjoy them a lot. Sera has some race specific romance lines I believe (it may just be the early flirts), but I forget what hers are for Cadash (I romanced her with Adaar). I think it's about Cadash being cute though. She seems to be suuuuper into qunari, think dwarves are adorable, be neutral on humans (i think?), and have ...difficulty with elves.

I kind of wish there could have been some dialogue for Cadash to relate to Sera, actually. Earlier I had focused mostly on Cadash being more likely to understand the Red Jenny situation, given their background in the Carta, but they might also have some feelings on "elfy elf" stuff informed by their role as a surfacer dwarf (versus "dwarfy dwarves" who live underground).

Sera has quite a few. Off the top of my head,

"oh, you are adorable you are"

"you're so SQUEEZY cute"

"she's smooshy....all over B)"

"you're so FRIGGIN twee, how can I not love that?"

And if you tell her the height difference is 'awkward enough as it is', she says she'll get you a box... because box.

I do think it would have been nice if Cadash's scruffy Carta dwarf background was compared and contrasted more with Sera's upbringing? Both in the sense of being street rats, and sort of feeling excluded from your larger culture..? Alas! Multiple races were implemented too late.

I actually found Sera's initial remarks to a f!dwarf almost as off-putting/borderline insulting as her comments to a Dalish. I'll eventually romance her with a qunari, I think, but I can't imagine any of my Dalish or dwarves romancing her...

Different strokes, I suppose. I think I like her dwarf remarks even better than her qunari ones, and my canon is an Adaar.

For someone who claims to view economic class and moral character as more important than race, Sera probably focuses more on the Inquisitor's race than anyone else. She literally greets a dwarf with, paraphrased, "I find humor in the fact that you are short, and will now laugh in your face. I condescendingly acknowledge that this is a racial characteristic, but because it is different from my norm, I find it fair game. No offense."

Yeah, it makes sense to me. Sera is acutely aware of race because she's experienced so many issues with it, and (at the beginning of the game at least) she's not mature or self-aware enough to process it internally. She has the problem of needing to work through these issues, but having trouble doing it mostly because she's incredibly defensive about the whole matter. So she brings it up the only way she knows how to: angrily or clumsily or by talking about differences or physicality. She just has no tools to talk about it.  After the stabilizing influence of the game, she's much calmer about elves in Trespasser and I imagine over time will be more sophisticated in the way she approaches talking to people of different races. She's just got a lot of growing to do. But I find it sympathetic, so it doesn't bother me.

Yeah, I enjoy Sera's foot-in-mouth syndrome. Snarky Hawke also spectacularly failed sensitivity training, so I'm used to it.

Anywho, returned to Orzammar with my carta boy and had a nice little chat with Brother Burkel. He tsk'd at the fact that most dwarves 'persist in worshipping their own forefathers' and I got to reply with, "No one worships my ancestors. My ancestors were nothing." OUCH! Right in the feels.

I don't think I've ever found Burkel as sympathetic as when he says it doesn't have to be that way.

Do you guys think there were dwarven mages back when they still were connected to the titans?

#7841

Yes, with a 'but'.

Yes they probably had some kind of magical ability, based on Solas's comments + the fact that Valta gained some kind of magical ability after reconnecting with the Titan. The 'but' is a qualifier to say that they might not have been mages the way we think of them. Who knows how they were able to use that power or what it mean to have it. A lot of unknowns. So if you define a mage as someone who can access the Fade and manipulate that energy, maybe not, but perhaps they had their own kind of power that is very similar to magic.

I never said I didn't like Sera, so no need to defend her :P I just can't imagine a dwarf finding "short people" comments amusing (at least from someone they literally just met,) much less attractive, so Sera would never even be on the radar for any of my dwarves.  It doesn't matter how Sera meant it, it's exactly the sort of thing most people would find offensive coming from someone they just met from another race and it would leave a lingering negative impression. Yes, Sera's an elf and runs into her own share of nastiness, but that isn't a license. I mean, would you expect Sera to laugh off being called a "knife ear" by someone on their first meeting? No, because you know it's insulting. I can't imagine dwarves hear any fewer comments about height than they do about all dwarves being smiths or criminals or that many if not most dwarves would feel it was intended as an insult. (If you know short people who find jokes about their height from virtual strangers is amusing or attractive, I want to meet them.)

It's all in how you headcannon things and how you think groups would interact. I personally think that would be one of the most off-putting things a non-dwarf could say to a dwarf they'd just met. So role-playing my dwarves as reacting to Sera's comments as I think most people would take them, as racially insensitive at a minimum, she's not a romance option for my dwarves. That doesn't mean other people have to interpret it that way, of course. I just wish they hadn't put those comments at the very beginning of the relationship. Later, it could reasonably have been taken as cheerful flirtatiousness with someone who trusted Sera (we can say things to friends that we'd never say to strangers.)

If you're talking to me, Tishina, I was responding to BigBad's comment, not yours. I have a bad habit of not quoting sometimes. But yeah, it's perfectly reasonable to find it off putting, and some of my characters do. (And it's perfectly reasonable to not like her as well, even though you didn't say that!).  I wasn't activating my Sera Defense Squad mode so much as expanding on BigBad's thought, because I think it's accurate but the more interesting part to me is why there is such a big difference between her expressed values and her actions and how that reason informs why her first words to you are the way they are.

I get why you wouldn't want to romance her with Cadash if that's how you interpret the scene and later conversations with her aren't sufficient enough for your characters to reconsider her! I have not done a Cadash romance with her yet so I can't speak to how I would process it, but that scene worked really well for my Adaar at least, because she had spent the entire game having people react negatively to her physical appearance/race, so while it might under different circumstances be off-putting or feel objectifying to have someone focus on that aspect of you immediately, the fact that Sera was the first person to be positive in a race specific context to her, made it a positive impression.

I think the point I was trying to make earlier though is that it happened so early is an important clue about Sera, and that's why its included. She's definitely designed to be the kind of character who is abrasive and shows a lot of the negative sides of her personality quickly (especially if you're playing as Lavellan or someone who doesn't agree with her) and to slowly open up and give context to that. I like it a lot, but I totally get why other people either wouldn't like it or wouldn't be able to justify their character putting in the work to get there. So I get what you're saying about wanting it later and it makes sense, but I think it's specifically designed that way because it fits the entire arc/theme/etc of Sera's character.

...This has nothing to do with anything, but I've got my fingers crossed for a female Tal-Vashoth romance in DA4, just so I can smooch her with a cute lady dorf. My Adaar had it bad for Scout Harding!

I had a dream about Cadash last night. Even though my canon run is an Adaar, I still feel like (perplexingly, with all the human Chantry and ancient elf stuff) a Dwarfquisitor is the best fit for this game. That probably only applies to dwarf fans, but eh! It's just so fun to think about what it would be like for a member of the least magical race to suddenly have a magical glowing hand, for one the setting's most "godless" religions to have spat out a so-called Herald of Andraste.

Amaziiiiiiing.

I love the codex entries you get, how everyone's just like: "uh, yeah so... that happened?"

I agree, it works out so well with a Dwarfquisitor! Both the lack of magic and religion were the reasons why I decided to do my first playthrough with a dwarf before the game was even released. She wanted so much to just save the people and not deal with any of that bullshit for once, so it's amusing how she completely failed to avoid it all in the end. And now there's some ancient mage messing with early retirement... again:lol:

We needed more sarcastic or race-specific quips in Inquisition, because I think Cadash would have had some great ones;

"Oh, I see... a Dwarf can be a Smith and Smuggler, but can't be the Herald of Whatserface?"

"By the Ancestors, I know that! I wasn't born under a rock... which coming from a dwarf, is an accomplishment in of itself!"

"Y'know, when I was little my gran told me to behave or the sky would take me away... I guess I owe her an apology."

I just finished my first DA:O runthrough with a dwarf and it was honestly one of my favorites. My guy still looked potato-ish but it grew on me. I picked casteless, rogue-archer, and romanced Morrigan. For once, I felt some investment in the situation when I went back to Orzammar and didn't want to die the entire time I was there. If we ever go back in a future game I hope we get to see Rica and her son again.

But I was wondering, is there any hope in future games that we won't have awkward cut scenes of Dwarfs and Qunari suddenly gaining or losing a foot when they have to interact with another character? I'm guessing it's so they won't have to redo all the cinematics but it can be so jarring, even in DA:O where it only seems to happen when two characters kiss.
