I just finished my first DA:O runthrough with a dwarf and it was honestly one of my favorites. My guy still looked potato-ish but it grew on me. I picked casteless, rogue-archer, and romanced Morrigan. For once, I felt some investment in the situation when I went back to Orzammar and didn't want to die the entire time I was there. If we ever go back in a future game I hope we get to see Rica and her son again.

But I was wondering, is there any hope in future games that we won't have awkward cut scenes of Dwarfs and Qunari suddenly gaining or losing a foot when they have to interact with another character? I'm guessing it's so they won't have to redo all the cinematics but it can be so jarring, even in DA:O where it only seems to happen when two characters kiss.

I've been replaying DA:O with a Brosca myself. The Tabris origin slightly edges it out for my favorite origin, but Brosca and Aeducan are pretty close behind. Sadly, I rather doubt we'll ever get a city elf option again, since the next game will probably go to Tevinter, and enslaved elf is not the same thing. As much as I love Brosca and even Cadash, I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever get anything except criminal origins for dwarves either. Or noble-born for humans...

Believe me, a lot of us are just tired of beating our heads against the wall, hoping someone will pay attention to objections to their "solution" to height differences. As far as I can tell, they literally can't conceive of a woman kissing downwards or a man's head being tilted up to kiss, for one. There are only one or two romances in DAI where they seem to make any effort to cope with height, sadly. My f!Cadashes are pretty much all defaulting to Harding for their romances...

That doesn't seem to be true.

I've played through the male Dwarf romances with Josephine and Cassandra and for the most part they absolutely make efforts to cope with the height difference. The ladies "kiss downward" and the dwarf guy tilts up for the kiss. The only slip up I can think of is the dance on the balcony at the Orlesian palace.

OK, so when it's a male PC, they sometimes can, though I've seen the main Cass romance scene, and male dwarves get tall enough to look over her shoulder. A female qunari shrinks until she's SHORTER than him, and I have never seen a BW game in which a taller female PC doesn't shrink shorter than a male (I may have missed a combo, but I kind of doubt it.) You really don't want me to start on all my issues with the romances for a f!dwarf, though. I'll just say the one attempt I made at playing through a dwarf x Blackwall romance ended up with me quitting the PT entirely. I literally walked away from the computer during the loft scene because the animations grated on me so badly.

One of us, one of us--!

I love this. Brosca remains my favorite origin, and I'm ridiculously attached to Rica and her son who has "the most beautiful brown eyes" (just like his uncle in my game!). Going back to Orzammar was surpassingly rich, for me - I'd heard that there wasn't much Brosca/Aeducan-specific content, but I was pleasantly surprised. Every other a-hole was calling me out for being a casteless nobody who thought I was hot **** now that I was a Grey Warden.

And Morrigan sympathizes with your mommy issues. It's great.

Blackwall was definitely the weirdest with this, even though I love him with Cadash. Qunari shrunk to kiss UP at him and dwarves were somehow eye-level with him but also had their feet on the ground?? Pretty silly.

That said, I didn't notice the same issues with Bull, Sera, Dorian, or Josie. Or Harding, obviously. Cass has a couple of flubs but generally it's not as bad as whatever was happening with Blackwall.

Doesn't Leliana kneel to kiss a dwarf Warden in DAO?

I think it'll depend on our role in the next game and whether we get any sort of origin story again. Without them, I think they'll pick backgrounds that are the easiest for new players to understand. I think any non-surface Dwarf background needs some sort of origin story, to make it clear where they come from and why they left.

i'm cryin 'cause i love dwarves tooooooo much

especially a dwarven inquisitor

It's like, I'm torn because I want to make my Adaar canon, I love IHW (granted that's mostly because Sera's scene makes me weep and squeezes my heart and owww) which makes the most sense to me as a mage character. AND YET. I'm viciously in love with my Lorna Cadash who would definitely lean towards Champions of the Just, I love the idea of the Herald of Andraste being a dwarf, I love the idea of a dwarf stabbing Tevinter on the map in Trespasser given their historic relationship, I love confronting Alexius and the Venatori and especially Corypheus himself as a dwarf because he's so insulting and I love craning my neck to look and people and being so SMOL yet GRAND and and and----

edit: ALSOOOO idgaf there is nothing cooler than a one-armed prosthetic crossbow-handed (that they very well could have built their self) dwarf. heart eyes

UGH I AM CADASH TRASH

No, I can't remember right now. I remember it being a little different, but I can't remember exactly how much. Post if you find it?

I don't think the text is sent to the codex after you read that letter. Or if it is, I never managed to find it back. :( Just like that message of the Carta about the Inquisition and the Herald you find in Valamar.

If you can remember where you found it, the DA wiki has all the non codex notes listed for each area of the game.

Somewhere in Skyhold I'm almost certain, but I can't remember if it was on a bench around the gardens or in the quartermaster's building near Cass and the tavern...

Went and checked, it's in the Quartermaster building, on the second floor. :)
It's called: A Letter Home and has a page in the wiki.

The one in the gardens is a letter for Wilbur. (Or Rector as he likes to call himself.)

The sad part is that the letter home codex is literally just the Qunari version. Seriously, does anybody actually update the da wiki anymore?

Bless your soouuul! Unfortunately the wiki only seems to have the Qunari version but Gilsa has the dwarf version! IIRC correctly, the writer's tone indicates that his father has some bias against elves if the Inquisitor is Lavellan. No idea what he says about Trev. Here's Cadash and Adaar's.

Father:

No. I will not come home. I know what happened to Haven: I was there. And I am not afraid of death. If none of us are brave enough to stand, then all of us will fall. I am your son. If you trust nothing else, trust me. The Inquisition is our only hope.

I also would like to request that you stop using such language to refer to the Inquisitor. It is not what you think. She is not trying to replace the Divine, or the Chantry, or become a God.

I know it’s a little odd for us to be following a dwarf. I knew them only as merchants and traders, growing up, and I will admit that I thought it was a joke when they told me the Herald was dwarven-kind. But I am ashamed that I ever thought that way. The Inquisitor is inspiring and speaks for all of us, no matter what she looks like.

I just hope you’ll be able to see that this is what I want and what I feel is my duty. I think Mother would be proud, and I know she would want you to be proud of me too.

Your son, and dedicated Inquisition soldier,

Eustace

No, the rumors are not wrong. The Inquisitor is a Qunari. Yes, with the horns and everything. You should see her. I have never seen so inspiring a figure. If you could have seen her at Haven, I know you'd believe, too.

Man, it's those little touches that make all the difference. I know I've ragged on about how multiple races suffered from this game originally being human-only, but bits like this really add to the flavor of the game. All the ambient dialogue/gossip you hear that references your race, when companions or enemies bring it up...

I think it's funny that with dwarves and elves he's like, "I know this is unexpected, but hear me out" and with qunari it's "SHE'S MAJESTIC".

Got my graphic card a few days ago, which means DA:I now runs as smoothly as dwarven baby arse. And Fjalar looks even more like the majestic nerd he is.

I always get a chuckle out of the similar note in Valammar.

The Carta see Lavellan, Adaar and Mages being accepted as the Herald is a sign that gullible humans are that desperate for a miracle. Trevelyan and Cadash on the other hand are immediately chalked up as a poncy noble trying to seize power and a Carta grifter pulling some kind of elaborate con.

Kind of telling how most people in Thedas view nobles, that they are the only ones besides criminals willing to pull that kind of stunt, as well as take advantage of horrible tragedies to get power and line their pockets.

Am I the only one that wants a proper Dwarf companion for DA 4 ? I mean, Varric is a Dwarf but he is an Andrastian Dwarf and he dislike anything Dwarven. I want a proper Dwarf companion who believes in the Stone and what have you. Oghren is not a stellar example of a Dwarf and we are highly unlikely to see Sigrun again even though she is awesome. I for one would love for an Ambassadoria Dwarf companion that is romanceable.

I'd love to see a more traditionalist dwarf, especially one from the Ambassadoria. Though I don't think that being Andrastian or from the surface makes you less of a "proper dwarf".

Does anyone else think Corypheus's taunts towards a Dwarfquisitor are particularly interesting?

"You think to best me? A runted dirt-worshipper? Your people have ever been the sand beneath Tevinter heels!"

Now, he could mean this literally, since dwarves... ya know... live underground. But given Tevinter's supposedly historically solid relationship with the dwarves, do you think it could mean there's more bad blood between the two than we've been lead to believe?

Possibly. On the surface it could appear that Dwarves and Vints get along because Vints need Lyrium and Dwarves need money but if we look deeper, I would not be surprised to learn that Vints and Dwarves don't like each other. I mean, Tevinter is a nation that prides itself on its magic and Dwarves can not only resist magic but also are the only ones who can mine lyrium. There has got to be some jealousy and envy at work there.

Yeah, I could see that. A grudging respect, and one that's not free of jealousy.
