I loved playing dwarven characters in DAO, but admit to not being too fond of the new female dwarf look. Yes the long arms now being normal is good, but when I saw our favourite bundle of murder standing next to the female inquisitor in Skyhold, I thought that she looked like a human child. Male dwarves still have that stocky muscular look.

I don't like it either, for pretty much the same reason (and because it's so unrealistic for a warrior). I've started to wonder if the change wasn't to make cutscenes easier to deal with multiple races by giving them about the same body width, etc. (qunari women got the same slimming treatment I think).

Part of the change in looks has made me decide that female dwarf playthrough will be a rogue.

What worries me is the romance scenes for female dwarf may look too....'creepy'...like an adult dating a child.

If so I'll resort to old save (pre-romance), and then I'll pretend she's got a crush on Varric and that it never comes to anything.

I think the male dwarf definitely scores here in looks, he'll be my tank playthrough.

I don't think the dwarf female LI scenes will look creepy. At least I hope not. :P

She still has a woman's body and a mature face (at least mine will!).

I have friends that are slim and short, and they look younger sometimes, but they don't look creepy with their SOs. (Er, I mean in public....obv I haven't seen their "LI scenes").

And of course, she'll be an adult capable of consenting and having an adult relationship.

But I do miss the stockiness :(

Not my dwarf, no one is going to mistake her for a child. She is gonna be grizzled, real grizzled. if I have to I will use the complexion slider to giver her a more older look like in DA:O. Only way back then to take the cute out of the dwarf lol

I still don't see how people can mistake a dwarf for a child  <_< . A elf isn't that much taller than a dwarf. I just want to see someone tell a smaller person that in life who's dating a really tall person, and see how they react to that comment.

I am a short person married to a tall one, but the difference is like 1 foot, not half my height. I actually blame it on the new look. The old look female Aeducan was amazing, and Alistair kneeling to give her a kiss was ....beautiful.

I get your concerns john. For me...I haven't seen enough of the lady dwarf relative to companions/wearing armor or Skyhold outfit for me to really be worried at this point. Sad, because my Brosca was perfect, arms and all :3 but not worried about it...can understand it though. I just hope it works out in the game!

Whilst replaying through Origins recently, I was surprised by just how tall my Dwarf was whilst stood next to Morrigan and Alistair out in the fields of Lothering. Guess I'd always just remembered them being smaller.

I love the Dwarves of DA though. My first warden to beat the entire game (DLC included) was a mighty Dwarf 2 handed warrior! I still find it hard not to pick a Dwarf when I replay, even now.

My excuse for playing a Dwarf right now however is because I've not yet seen Bhelen's reaction when a Dwarf noble decides to side with him!

Interjecting randomly to say I didn't get round to playing a dwarf in Origins, and then missed the chance to do so in II. My first Inquisitor will be a dwarf as a result, despite my deep need to play as a qunari.

So in the twitter thread a dev was happy when her enemies ran over her caltrops. Maybe I will get my wish as Artificer by making my enemies die before they reach me? :D

You should totally go back and play a dwarf Warden when you get a chance (before DA: I drops, I'd say).  Even if you just play through the two origins.  I find the dwarven noble origin to be the best of them all.  It's got political intrigue and there are just so many ways that you can RP it.  It's really fantastic.  The dwarven commoner origin is also really good.  I'd probably put that one third.  Playing both of these really give you an insider view on Orzammar dwarves and their culture that you just don't ever get playing as a non-dwarf Warden.  They are fantastic stories.

I agree, though playing through far enough to at least do the initial encounters when you return to Orzammar for those quests is enlightening too. I love the DC origin because you really get a clear view of what the caste system means (and it's hard to play that origin without hero-worshipping Duncan).

I'd say it's worth getting Oghren asap after Lothering (don't need to complete a Paragon of Her Kind, just do the side quests long enough for him to approach the warden and then head out). Oghren has a few dwarf specific dialogue that changes based on noble or commoner. Nothing earth-shattering, but if one is going to go through the trouble of a new playthrough, might as well grab Oghren, too.

Is it just me or does the voice for the male dwarf inquisitor sound a bit like Wrex?

I don't think I have it in me to install DAO on my PC at the moment, but I might just have to boot it up on the xbox and play through those dwarven origins then. I've always heard they were excellent, but somehow never got around to it.

I thought they were two of the best origins myself, and there's a lot of origin involvement later during the Paragon quest chain. I like the DC a little better than the DN (which makes sense because I also like the CE best).

DN is so deliciously twisty and layered and also Gorim. :3333

DC is the ultimate underdog and is also pretty complex.

Both are great springboards for new characters. I prefer DN for just the origin, but DC overall. You can't go wrong with dwarves :)

I was wondering whilst in the shower (Best thinking place) how Dwarves did their trading with the outside world before there was a surface caste. I mean, there HAD to be a time where there was not a surface caste.

I mean, perhaps before the Darkspawn, the Dwarves didn't need to trade with the outside world, but in Origins it does state that Orzammar  relies on the trade from the surface.

I wonder if there was simply just a time when the Surface Caste were not considered lesser people and were able to come and go as they pleased, but some event changed the Dwarven people's thoughts on the surface, so now they only trade with them begrudgingly.

You are only a surfacer if you permanently live on the surface. Dwarves can go to the surface and trade, as long as they actually live in Orzammar.

Hmmm, male dwarf in DAO is interesting (reached Lothering now). Though Morrigan calling me a "little man" made me wish I had an appropriate retort... :P

The Dwarves has always had good relations with Tevinter.

Therefore I respect the Dwarves more than any other race. Stout and loyal allies, even if the allegiance is built on mutual profit. A dwarf in conflict, even castless.... I would aid him/her to the death.
