My dwarf warrior (above) will probably be my first PT. Eventually, I'll try a dwarf rogue, but I'm not that interested in the artificer specialization which is the only one we know much about at this point. My Aeducan was a warrior (sword and shield) and my Brosca was a rogue (dual wield). I've never had much luck with my rogues as an archer (Leliana is the only companion I ever spec that way), but I think I must have been missing something in playing them since everyone else seems to get huge amounts of damage with them.
Smells like Gelfing? Sorry, had to give a Dark Crystal shout out.
The key I found is to get your strength to 21, since it'll allow you to wield the heavy duty bows, along with getting your dex up. The other trick I found is to keep cunning either just below or equal to my dex. Finally, before I get too many active skills going, I try to get my passive abilities going. The ones that gave you passive bonuses to damage or crit.
@Puppy Oh, it's more than just Dragon Age. Plenty of games such as Warcraft and the Neverwinter Nights series have allowed for dwarven mages. It's just not a popular race in most fantasy settings, unfortunately. I personally don't mind having no access to dwarven mages in Thedas. Magic? Give me a good bow, some nice enchantments and some alchemy. Magic is overrated sometimes anyhow.
Besides, I've got my Qunari saved for my mage game.
