Spears are one of the world's first and most iconic weapons, unlike every other weapon it spans every culture, and until firearms they never went out of style, used everywhere by warriors of all cultures.  There is no weapon more prevalent and more apart of the development and history of the human species everywhere.

And yet...

The spear for all it's magnificence and splendor, the spear which has helped our ancestors rise from a primitive peoples, who existed as scavengers, hiding from the brutal predators of their day, to powerful and efficient predators, is time and time again, left to the wayside.

Alas the poor spear, for all you've done, the way we treat you.

I beseech thee Bioware, for the future, give the weapon, who helped make us what we are, it's due.  Honor the history of all the peoples of this Earth, and give the spear it's glory once again, bring it out from the ashes of our history, and give it a history in the world of Dragon Age worthy of it's greatness.

Give us a weapon style with the greatest and most important melee weapon that has ever been held by man.

Oh spear, how thou dost pierce my <3

I can't read this topic as anything other than a euphemisn.

That being said I do agree that spears are cool, and that there are wonderful options for a melee spear warrior. Dragons Dogma had NPC spears that worked wonderfully.

Just a hunch, but maybe they weren't implemented because they look too much like mage staves.

Can't lie, I wanna fight with a spear, Oberyn-style, of course, sans Mountain smash.

You treat the style as spears and pole arms of a stabby nature.  Is different enough from a staff.

The spear is just an often overlooked weapon, oddly, because of it's prominence in our history.  It's been a part of humanity for so long it blends into the background.  It's our old and reliable.  Even though new weapons came out like swords and such, the spear never went out of style.  It really is a shame it gets so little respect.

At least there are axes and hammers in the games.  True they're more mauls than warhammers, but still.

I love spears and polearms, but for some strange reason none of the game developers do, it feels like they're trying to hide or deny their existence so they don't have to make extra animations and weapon models.

All I can say is that if I was sent back into the 1400's and I'd have to participate in a battle my meele weapon of choice would not be a sword or a hammer, it would be the halberd. It gives me reach and I can stab, cut, rip and smash. Now thats versatility right there.

I, uh, ......nevermind..

topical wise...  Spear would get someone killed by Templars, cause it looks staff like.  Considering a Templar kills a farmer for just having farming tool out, while on his own propery. Spear wouldn't be adviseable, though for the group, that might be alright. It's questionable. And now I need to leave this thread all together, mind is going places I don't want it too. :P

Yep, I wasn't serious for the most parts.  ;)  The Templars killing the farmer is there though for having his farming tools. They mistook him as a mage, cause the shovel end was in the ground, the handle was up in his hands.

So because there's a mentally deficient murderous Templar out there, no one should use spears?  Huh...

Yeah same here.  I've held many weapons in my hands and the only one that truly feels natural is a spear and similar polearms.  Is like there's an innate instinctual bond with the weapon after humanity has used it for so long that it's as innate and comfortable as using ones own body.

I have a respect for halberds and such as well, but the spear's history is too great to ignore for me.  It feels weird how the weapon that best defines humanities rise and carried us through countless battles is treated as some secondary weapon to weapons many of which were special niche weapons at best.

Spear would be fine for Inquisitor I am sure. I don't oppose it, just saying that Templars might of killed the spear holders already and everyone decided it was unsafe. :)

[raises the sign post as a Chinese chauvinist]

I would like to point out that the Chinese utilize spear in a different manner.

In addition to the reach, the flexibility of the wooden pole has become another heavily utilized feature.

While weapons are typically fixed in shape and comparatively predictable, spear head on a wooden pole can shake very violently and quickly, effectively resulting in multiple proximity thrusts and slashes.

While blow from the pole is typically non-lethal, it can at the very least inhibit any enemy or provide leverage for added mobility.

Not sure what you're saying is different for the Chinese.

Pole weapons, in general, are woefully underrepresented in the game industry compared to historical representation. Historically, the idea was to keep the opponent as far away from you as possible. But each pole weapon (spear, halberd, pike, etc, etc, etc) would need its own animation. An overhand axe blow would kinda work for a sword or a mace, but if you've got somebody doing a halberd animation, it would look ridiculous with a spear. Or they just decided that they had enough 2H weapons.

Oh definitely, is why I prefer the spear for spears and other stabbing based polearms.

A halberd is a multitool weapon.  Which of course has it's advantages and disadvantages.  Is definitely a different weapon with different maneuvers,

I'm not sure his issue with axes, probably the second most common melee weapon to bladed weapons like swords and daggers, but his issue with warhammers could be that we pretty much never see warhammers in games, instead seeing Mauls instead.
