I think one of the major problems with spears has always been that they use a move set from that's very different from swords or axes. Of course in reality two-handed swords use a very different move set from axes or hammers, but most people don't recognize that, they just think you swing swords, axes and hammers into the other guy. But spears work in a noticeably different way that most people are aware of and so people would think it would look stupid if they used the same animations. This means devs must create a whole new set of animations for one weapon type. I guess they just don't think it's worth it.

Is rare anyone ever does, and I think it's a shame.  We as a people owe so much to the spear, I think it's worth the extra effort if for that respect alone.

Something that doesn't seem to have been considered so far is that Polearms are large weapons that might cause a few clipping issues when carried round on the character's back (especially if they are created to the same exaggerated scale as the other weapons in DA).

Also, In reality one handed weapons like the long sword, axe or mace were designed as side arms that could be comfortably carried around in day-to-day life, and DA's current two-handed weapons would mostly have been slightly larger versions of these. Polearms were designed as weapons of war and not to be carried around casually. This might go part of the way to explaining the popularity of longs words and their ilk in adventuring games; you wore a long sword all the time for self defence, you only carried a polearm as part of your battledress.

Spears make for great walking sticks lol, and if we can put a staff on our backs in game we can most certainly put a spear on our backs,

Spear is kinda boring as far as visuals go. In a more realistic art direction it would be nice, but imo DA can barely do sword right when it's friendly weapon for exaggerated animations. I don't even wan't them to try spear. Perhaps in another game.

I could see a halberd or a glaive working well with the current animations because they have an edge. A spear would require a whole new set of them.

Also, In reality one handed weapons like the long sword

Just a correction, longsword is a two handed weapon. The only reason hold it with one hand is to use the other hand for grappling/disarming during duels  The arming and the bastard swords were used with shields. ONly reason I'm writing this is cause it's the most common misconception thanks to DnD.

Normally I'd say I care that they get it right, but at this point I'll take what I can get.  As for being boring visually, I disagree depending on how they animate it.  The spear can be a very lovely and graceful weapon.

The spear deserves representation, and the more games that have it, the better.  I believe in giving credit to where it is due.

So what?  Dual wielding was a rare and rather ridiculous style of fighting that gets too much support beyond it's worth anyway.  It barely even deserves recognition especially the amount it gets.  Not to mention what recognition it does get portrays it completely wrong anyway.  :P

Two weapon fighting styles tend to have off weapon as a shield in general. Not everyone was capable of using both as actual weapons. In war, those that had duel weapons would try to flank or skirmish, they was never used on the line. (wiki) Gladiators that used two weapons wasn't that common, it required a lot of skill, and then they usually faced certain foes. (again wiki) Martial artists do have use of two weapon styles, but during those times when it was very rampant, they lacked weapons more often than they had weapons. They use them but its again, not too common, more often its just fist, and feet.

Spears, are representative in the bayonet attached to a rifle. A spear has been useful in most combat up till firearms took over its place. (wiki)  Spears could be used inside and outside of battlefields.

I never cared for them. Realisitically speaking they are superb anti cavalry but, me personally.

I played the original D&D basic set, had an elf character. He got this pole-arm eventually. The reach it gave was awesome, but its deciding factor was it did have the ability to cast healing spells. It had magical abilities imbued into it. My elf came across a dragon that appeared to been a gold dragon (good), cause it scales gave off golden appearance but turned out to be a brown dragon, evil one. The pole-arm saved my elf's life in that fight. Talking about an elf that solo'd most of his entire career, that pole-arm (halberd specifically) became quite a fantastic weapon. Though after becoming a Grandmaster over swords, the polearm became useless.

Granted I am based on a one time deal with halberds for anything I played. Actually it might of been a Guisimare. I spelled it wrong.  :)

I had a character in D&D with a magical spear once that could alter it's form between 4 weapons, A long spear, a spear, a short spear, and a javelin with the returning quality.  My character was a wood elf ranger, was a load of fun.   Though she could never escape euphemisms from the rest of the party about the spear getting longer when she held it.

Maybe they will implement in the future games.. You know like horses.. Magical creature unheard off in Thedas. Men marches on foot during war. Years later, this creature suddenly spawns during the Inquisition.

I hope spear will be added in the future. Mid range weapon plus some spears can be thrown or there is a warrior skill like arrow of slaying. Warrior throws his spear using all of his might to inflict tremendous damage.

Pole-arms did manage to take over in many armies later on as the lance took over for cavalry, but it was still used. :)   Forgot to add that part.

I actually know that weapon your talking about Puppylove. Its been used in games I been in before. And, that is funny to hear.  :)  Thanks.

I was aware of that, but figured that not everyone would know what an arming sword was, whilst as you say, the 'longsword' is pretty ubiquitous in d&d.

Also, as someone else pointed out, I guess DA does already have staves on mages back, which kind of counters my argument about clipping. From what I recall though, staves in DAO were far shorter than polearms would be. I still think it is yet another impediment as to why BioWare as of yet haven't introduced spears et al.

You do?  Where is it?  Mine was a custom weapon with DM approval.

Yeah, well a lot of polearms get their inspiration from the spear, and many of them are really a more specialized version of it.  Is really an evolution of the spear, and hybridization between the spear with other weapons.

Honestly the two oldest weapons of mankind is the spear, axe and club.

It may be, but isn't going to stop me from asking they get their due.  Also it depends on the spear really, they vary in length greatly.

Yep, current day spear is the length of a rifle and a bayonet attached, that is our modern day spear on battlefields.

Puppylove, its been awhile, but their is more than one that shifted into different weapons, had a sword that changed as well. It will be awhile before I can look less my friend is awake right now. I will text him and see if he knows.

Debating if I ever remake it if I want to add the exotic great spear to it as well.  Thinking it might be too much though.

Yeah that would be much I think. ;)  I stopped playing D&D quite awhile ago. I am currently in Champions/Hero System Game, tabletop. That is fun! :)  She uses hookswords that can be hooked together for slight distance attack, but she can just shoot them instead, more effective. My only second female outside of CRPGs.

It's not the same, it is a weapon shift.  Rod of Lordly Might, took me awhile to remember. it does have spear and long spear options, but many others. Its very useful in many common ways without using its magic. Sorry, I didn't remember it correctly.

Oh I knew about that weapon.  Didn't really pay attention to all it's options, seemed too random to me.  I wanted something more thematic.

It has a lot of usefulness for warriors, light item to carry around that helps basic dungeon delving needs. It's basically a very big improvement on the swiss army knife. It does have a few spells it can cast but its strength is in being a multitool mostly.

The issue is not clipping, it's carrying a weapon on your back that is the issue. You don't carry a spear on your back, you have it in your hand or strapped to your shield.

Also, most warriors (mostly levies and conscripts) didn't have swords at all. Swords were primarily a status symbol for nobility, who could afford better steel that was good enough to make swords instead of more "crude" weapons. The obsession with swords actually only dates back to the roman empire for europeans.

Before that, the spear was the more noble weapon; the greeks even regarded the use of a sword on the battlefield as outright dishonorable, because having to pull out your sidearm implies that you have been disarmed of your spear, and thus that your opponent has already bested you.

You also probably wouldn't want to try drawing a two-handed sword over your shoulder with an opponent nearby, but for various reasons that's where they're carried in DA. If BioWare were to introduce spears, that's where they'd likely go; they would already be having to introduce new animations for polearm attacks (the primary reason we don't already have spears) so doubtless they'd want to save resources where possible.

The availability, affordability and legality of carrying swords has varied considerably over time and location, and was not always limited to the higher echelons of society. It isn't really possible to generalise.

I love spears and polearms, but for some strange reason none of the game developers do, it feels like they're trying to hide or deny their existence so they don't have to make extra animations and weapon models.

All I can say is that if I was sent back into the 1400's and I'd have to participate in a battle my meele weapon of choice would not be a sword or a hammer, it would be the halberd. It gives me reach and I can stab, cut, rip and smash. Now thats versatility right there.

If I found myself in a battle in the 1400s, I think I would get the hell out of there! That, or go man the Catapults.

I want to throw Javelins like the Qunari in DA2 and the Paragon in the original Guild Wars... God, how I loved that Class... like a Paladin, but with Style...
