I sincerely hope the rumors about a remastered version of the ME Trilogy is true! I have thought about the good and bad sides of all 3 games, and this is what I have come up with that I think would make a playthrough of all the games really worth the while, feeling fresh and at the same time keeping the old feel. These are my thoughts.
ME1: I think Bioware should put most effort into the first game, the story is really good and I think most players have most memories from ME1. If these changes were made (listed below), I would buy the game full price.
- Modern graphics, and by that not just the textures, everything needs to be fleshed out, like the background scene at Eden Prime, the Citadel Battle and so on should be on ME3 level or better. The animations, people, weapons, machines should all be on ME3 level or better.
- Better sounds: While the voices and music were really good, and the sounds that already exists in ME1 are ok/good I think more diversity and higher quality would really strengthen the game. All the snipers sound exactly the same and when the watch the fleets at the final battle duke it out, the ships canons sounds like snipers too! This really bothered me and killed some of the immersion, I believe the reason behind this were budget. These small details are important when I buy a remastered game.
- More diversity at bases. While the missions themselves were good, all the side mission locations and bases felt the same. There was the standard tunnel or entrance, the standard crates placed in different locations and the standard computers, hopefully because of budget and not laziness. More thorough work at the different locations would make the side missions way more exciting. Examples could be like the mission where a dude made his own little cult the base could be covered with a altar and some candlelights, and when you board the ship of that crazy doctor Garrus were hunting the interior could be really dirty, flickering lights and some blood here and there instead of a shiny ship with some crates.
- Improve/remove Mako exploration: First time I played mass effect I accepted the Mako driving as a necessary evil, the second time it was frustrating, the third time… HOLY KROGAN **** THIS IS SO DAMN ANNOYING!! Please, just do SOMETHING. Give the Mako some mass, it felt like a balloon with rockets, flatten out the insane planets that made driving so painful or just give us a Gunship. The fighting were boring too, it felt flat, Bioware should get some inspiration from the Tank driving in Halo 3.
- Modernized gameplay. Maybe not completely like ME3 because some of the charm with ME1 was the slower, more RPG like gameplay. But more seamless cover-system, smarter AI (mostly for the squad), and more aggressive shooting like in the later games would do the game good.
- Make FemShep, Ashley and Liara ME3 hot.
ME2: This game I played the most. The story is weaker than the first game but I liked the Character dialogues, seamless fighting, and the lawless part of the galaxy. I only have a few suggestions.
- Mining: REMOVE, I never liked it, but because I wanted all the upgrades, I had to. At least make the mining much more effective or make it possible to buy the minerals. Or, as a side mission, make it possible to loot Mercenary depots, that way you could get some XP as well.
- NO DLCs, they should be included.
- Details: in many of the cut scenes Shephard and his squad used wrong weapons, like a generic assault rifle instead if the right weapons. Garrus had a wrong rifle during his personal assassin mission and so on. Small errors, I know, but would be nice if they got fixed.
- Improve graphics and cut scenes to ME3 level or better.
- Again, the exploration is boring, the Hammerhead is way better than the Mako but the worlds are boring and the fighting is lame. Give us a gunship.
- There are more, but I will mention this in things that cover all the games.
ME3: I liked the game, and after the endings were improved, I was happy. However, a remastered version should have some improvements:
- Why are vorcha leading the Blood Back in ME3? While the vorcha started BP it was well stated in ME2 that the Krogan was in control and the vorcha were mere cannonfodder (correct me if im wrong). Seems like Bioware don’t remember their own lore.
- Even better graphics and backgrounds, Xbone and PS4 got more juice, so there is room for more background fighting, planes and ships dogfighting and generally more life to make the battlefields and worlds more real.
- Where are the forces you recruit? When you attack Earth and have all those nice mercenary groups, Geth Primes and Krogan lords on your side it feels like they changed plans and decided that the Humans and some Turians could fetch for themselves because you see almost no allies. There should be heavy mechs, Geths and so on giving it to the Reapers. But its only some pinned down human soldiers you got to help, and some Makos getting wrecked.
General improvements.
- Customization: Gamers love it, and those who do not, can ignore it. Many of us want to color, change parts and give our characters our own distinct look. This seems either very time consuming to develop, expensive, both, or game developers just don’t seem to know this.
The customization in ME1 were ok, I want the opportunity to change colors, I looked weird with 2 commandos with tactical uniforms accompanied by a PINK Krogan.
Overall, the customization where good, loads of armors, weapons and mods. In a remastered edition I would like the mods to change how the weapons look like in ME3.
In ME2 the customization were crap. Seriously… Miranda running around a combat zone in tights, and Jack almost naked? Please let us give our squad the same armor that Shepard use, and let us decide how they look. If I want my squad to look all black, pink or green, i want to do it, its important. Also, weapon mods like in ME3.
I like customization in ME3, but again, let us give our own Shepherd look to the armors. Its just too stupid fighting Cerberus in Cerberus armor, with Cerberus colors and logo. I see the point of using Cerberus equipment because its good but at least make the option to color it in Alliance colors.
- Remove or improve the ammunition mags: yes… yes… we don’t buy the heating excuse, its mags. Did anyone have problems with the ME1 version with heating building up? I didn’t, it was original and refreshing not running around collection ammo all the time. Just how did they remove every weapon without mags in the galaxy in just 2 years? It’s just not logic, why do the weapons fail instantly when you have empty mags if they are just for heating vent? There should at least be a combination of the two versions. Like, they invented heating mags to be able to hold fire longer, but when you are out of mags, you have to handle the weapons like in ME1. Alternatively, just keep the ME1 version through all the games.
- Make Alliance colors and designs the same for whole Trilogy for immersion.
- I liked the weight limit system in ME3, it's logic that Shep, who is an N7 soldier, can handle every weapon. So this should be implemented in all games.
- Some hint of that the renegade interruption does. Some of the renegade choices are plain *******.
I will buy the remastered games even if they just get an texture upgrade. But I think these improvements will make the games better and remove some issues that’s not gamebreaking but annoying. Im sure I forgot something as its long time since I last played ME.
Do you agree or disagree? What do you think should be changed or upgraded?
