Less bugs, less times spent having to make maps from scratch, less time having to program enemy mechanics, more time able to spend on important things like story, narrative, and incorporating player choice into the story.

Downsides? People like you have something to whine about.

So, you're ignoring the giant fundamental differences between the SP and MP modes. Gotcha.

I guess everything works if you're ignoring half of the criticism.

Dragon Age isn't suited for multiplayer, especially the kind that DAI has been confirmed to have. There are literally zero benefits here.

And I play pure single player games to get away from dealing with people,if I want to play with a team then I'll play AC's multiplayer or GTA Online. That's one benefit of playing purely single player games,my fun isn't dictated by others and the same in reverse.

1. Explain how dragon age isn't suited for multiplayer. Just stating that it isn't without any supporting evidence is just opinion grand standing.

2. Explain why your personal preference matters when making a game designed for hundreds of thousands of people who aren't you?

3. What are the benefits of a purely single player game, that cannot exist in a single player game with a multiplayer component, since you never answered the question?

So when can we start talking about the actual features of the multiplayer and move on from how it's surely the third coming of BioWare's downfall..?

Is it just me or did that IGN video with gameplay in it look like it was a hair slower than the SP combat we've seen?

There are plenty of benefits. Let's look at what ME3 did alone - it introduced new enemies, classes, weapons and environment hazards. It also provided a social/party aspect to a game that normally didn't have such. This opened up a whole new way to enjoy the game - and that is what the game should be about. Enjoying it. You want to play it for it's SP story. So do I. But I also relish the idea to go on Skype with 3 other friends and just have some insane fun in the Dragon Age world using characters to complete objectives and hack/slash up some mobs.

I see plenty of benefits. Just because you don't like the addition of MP does not invalidate what it brings to the table.

ME3's multiplayer is radically different from this one.DAI's multiplayer is basically going to be a disjointed wave battle mode with randomly generated maps, there's no point to it other than to kick back and have fun.

You're ignoring that the mechanics of both modes do not need to be the same, as was the case in mass effect 3.

I guess everything works if you're ignoring half of the empirical evidence.

Lots of things are fun,but I expect my multplayer modes to have a point to them besides that.Atleast make it like AC's multiplayer where people can compete against each other in terms and is connected to the story in some way.

You're the Inquisitions soldiers off collecting gold and tobacco and booze that the Inquisitor can't be bother with because he's too busy sword-****** demons and plowing bar wenches.

1.)Dragon Age uses real time pause and play gameplay, with multiplayer that will have to be altered since DA's single player game mechanics aren't suited for the type of fast paced game types most multiplayer modes have.

2.)Did I say anything about my personal preferences mattering to others who don't feel the same way?

3.)I already did answer.

I, for one, am super excited about the MP, even though I wasn't really looking forward to this kind of news at first. I think the fact that the SP and the MP are two completely separate things (unlike in ME3) is perfect to please everyone. I mean, if you really don't wanna play the MP, I guess it won't be forced unto you, which is good. Personally, I'll probably alternate between the two, depending on how I'm feeling at the moment.

In brief: Yay for you, Bioware! :D Nice move.

I'm already discussing MP with some of my friends, trying to see who's gonna play what first and how we're gonna play and stuff. (All that based on our own speculations for now, of course). We just can't wait. It just made an already awesome-looking game even cooler.

This is a fair criticism in some ways - we've certainly seen games hurt by "lack of MP" though I would never really associate this danger with any Bioware games, even if a fair number of them had MP in some form [BG 1/2 for example though it was VERY forgettable/irksome]

I have never seen a game hurt by lack of multiplayer.

I have, however seen plenty of games where MP interfered with SP.

Heck I even question that MP adds longevity to a game.  Take BG.  15 years later people still play the game and remember the characters.  What are the odds DAI's servers will still be up fin fifteen years?  Far more likely they'll be sunsetted in five years or less.

The original MP was simply you mindlessly running through area, picking elf-root. They were worried it played too much like Skyrim.

It is being forced on us though.   I'm paying for a product that doesn't focus all its attention on what its primary point of engagement is.  If I wanted to pay $60 dollars for a game that tried to metaphorically chase after two rabbits simultaneously, I'd buy Spec Ops: The Line.

I am sure there will be plenty of single player only rpgs coming out. Like the witcher 3. And of course, you can still treat this game as single player if you want, there is zero incentive to play the co op if you dont want to. So single player gaming hasnt died just yet.

I for one will be completely ignoring the multiplayer.

Hi Mike. In the DA:I MP, do you HAVE to have 4 players? Or can the missions scale down for 2 or 3 players?

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

You can run with less than 4, but it will be harder.

Yeah, sounds awful. I hate kicking back and having fun. Its why I repeatedly punch myself in the crotch during my free time when I could watch a movie or play mahjong instead.

I

Keep in mind in the SP you are responsible for your entire party (4 characters) so the need to pause is more essential to keep tabs on what is going on.  In MP you are only responsible for your own character as the others are being controlled by other players so you don't need to keep tabs on them as much.

Plus this can be said about Mass Effect, it used a real time pause and play gameplay and many didn't think they could translate because of this yet the transition to MP was quite solid.

I wish I could view the glass as half full as you do.  I really do.   But you're right about The Witcher 3.  That game won't let me down.  Based CDPR.

I can see that patched by Christmas to scale like how ME3 would "scale" if you solo'd

Again,Mass Effect is a different beast since you only control one character and that's Shepard. In Dragon you are able to control everyone in the party,I just don't see how the multiplayer is going to solve that particular hurdle.
