This is very Zen.
Judging from the reactions here, I think we're in a place at the moment where multiplayer is exciting for a lot of people, and I think DAMP is a sensible decision. It's been handled well, too, by not being connected to the singleplayer at all.
I don't think it's about a genre switch. I think most people are highly social, first and foremost. Whether they're on the internet or not, they feel better being connected to people. So there has to be games catering to this mindset.
The minority is people (which I count myself among) who can have more fun alone, and would rather immerse themselves in imagination or books or game stories.
That said, neither is going away anytime soon. Both crowds can be catered to equally.
Well, in DA:I's case it looks like not so much a case of genre switch as just putting two genres side by side. As someone who does like both, I couldn't be more pleased.
We're getting a huge SP RPG and an optional multiplayer component.

I agree that both can be catered to. I also think there are a lot of people who are a part of both "crowds" and can enjoy both equally. *nod*
Its not the only reason Mr Schumacher - for basically all of Dragon Age's development (going back to Origins) there has been a constant, please don't introduce multiplayer. Heck we even had it with Mass Effect. this group will feel betrayed.
Please don't quote me out of context and reply to that. I was referring to those that have skepticism towards whether or not single player content will be gated in any way by multiplayer.
DA2 there was a lack of time and budget and it seems people were trying new things. For one, the goal seemed to be the avoidance of overlapping; But I see nothing wrong with giving a warrior unique bow or DW skills. It adds more uniqueness and styles to play.
This is a request for more content though. Everyone always wants more content. You're perfectly correct that adding unique bow skills for warriors would be interesting and there's nothing wrong with that.
We have to stop adding content eventually, however.
Indeed, I wonder what was simplified, or dumbed down in the sp for this.
Nothing.
In fact, the multiplayer aspect of DAI is much much much cheaper to develop that the singleplayer aspect. If you look at both from an "income per hour of development point of view", the multiplayer will surely be a much more profitable development.
So even if I do not touch the multiplayer at all, I am indeed very happy that it exists, because it allowed Bioware to take a bigger budget from EA, and use it to make a better and more polished single player than we would have if it wasnt for multiplayer.
See what I did there? How I turned it all over? My argument is as strong as yours. We do not know how they invest their resources, so stop talking as you knew.
I'm no fan of multiplayer. I'll cope though if it really is isolated and has no impact on my single player experience.
random thought: since consoles will only have 8 quick slots for abilities does that mean characters will have only 8 abilities or will there be a larger pool from which to choose 8
And now BW staff and some forumites wonder/are perplexed why people like me dont belive what they say. Go figure.
No one at BioWare is perplexed about the skepticism. It was literally stated by myself towards those that were flabbergasted by the skepticism why people are skeptical about my (or any other's) claim that SP won't be affected by MP.
If you'd prefer, we could say nothing along those lines. I don't think it'd be very convincing. The reality is for people that don't feel we learned from that mistake, the only thing that is going to change their mind is seeing it in the game themselves.
Guys, if you don't get voice chat, I won't.
Also, there better be shouting, cursing little children who scream profanities.
Oh and then we can have team versus team matches, where everyone shouts and screams.
That is what Mass Effect 3's multiplayer had missing. Profanities! ![]()
Sigh. This is why I'm loyal to Call of Duty.

You could also sacrifice a goat, take a blood oath, or offer them their money back if any of their actions in MP have any affect on SP whatsoever.

Think Diablo 3. You have access to as many abilities as you can gain from leveling up (probably to lvl 30 max, somewhere around 10-15 active abilities depending on how many passives/actives you take). However, you can only choose 8 abilities at a time for your "loadout." They can be switched "in the field." Which probably means, again exactly like Diablo 3, changed at any time you aren't in combat. At least that's my understanding of the situation from the FAQs and demo vids.

From what i've seen Allan prefers sacrificing fennecs and nugs to the crafting gods, just saying
To the people thinking that the MP won't affect the SP: It already has.
They designed the entire gameplay system with accommodating multiplayer in mind. There are no sustainable abilities. There is an 8 ability "loadout" and no radial menu (much like Diablo 3).
These are irrefutable facts, and if you think they aren't due to MP, I'm really not sure what I can say that will convince you.
This also makes me wonder if the Cerberus clones the Red Templars were thought up and fully designed with the SP story and features in mind or if Bioware needed another faction with a big boss monster for the MP game and created the Red Templars and then put them in the SP game.

you know there is cynicism, and then there are conspiracy theories, Dragon Age has a billion factions to choose from, why create one espacially for the MP and then shove it in SP?
This news makes me so happy, I'm having a total fangasm right now ![]()
Soo... Why are people being negative if they did not even get to see a whole session of a MP match? Shouldnt one give his opinion after trying out the item in question?
BSN it's trying to revert to its "best"
I'm not surprised about DAIMP

I sure hope not. The reality is that literally every gameplay design decision of this game had to account for the multiplayer since both modes operate under the same parameters. My hope is that this taint didn't bleed over into the story decisions too...that's harder to say.
Yep. MP should be a FULLY optional. I want the option of have it as an optional extra, meaning I can choose to not have it in my game and to get a discount for it.
So for example just DA:I single player : $ 50
DA:I with multiplayer : $ 60
As it stands, it is being forced on us.
This is petulant, entitled and unreasonable.
You do not get the chance to dictate game content - they don't allow discounts for not buying the romances, or for only buying one class, or cutting out half the levels if you pay $40.
Grow up and buy the full game, or don't buy it at all.
So one can use real money to buy top equipment in MP, it seems. BioWarez?
