Now there's a neat idea. Having a decent flanking bonus for archery would be fantastic, but being able to obtain or make poison arrows would be too cool for words. I've never really been able to get into archery, but that might also have more to do with my up-close-and-personal playstyle than anything else. And yes, I agree that maces and mauls were pretty underwhelming. Historically, the main benefit of blunt weapons was to immobilize, so penalties to attack and movement speed, as well as a damage reduction following a successful hit would be very appropriate. I hope it happens.
I thought maces and mauls main benefit was against heavy armors as the way they were built allowed them to heavily dent them, while other lighter weapons had no real noticeable effect. A blow from a weapon such as these had such force that it would crush the armor, shatter bones, and force a person down. While such a weapon was slow and unwieldy against a faster lighter armored foe, they we devastating against an armored knight in full plate and one of the few melee weapons with any real noticeable effect. A blow to the head for example with one of these weapons will kill or knock out even the most armored foes, while a sword may do no more than give a headache to heavy enough armor.
I could be wrong, I'm not an expert on these particular weapons, but this was my understanding.
