The chantry gets a lot of flack from people, often seeming because they have an in real life beef with christianity or religion in general. However, I feel in doing so they ignore the legitimately good work they provide to the people.

The chantry seems to offer services of education and shelter for those in society not fortunate enough to afford tutors, such as the upper class nobles and merchants. They give aid in the form of relief workers and supplies in times of crisis and push for humanitarian efforts and practices, calling out and attempting to fight against exploitative business practices as we've seen in DAO.

They are the primary caregiver for orphans, offering them a future beyond begging in the street or pursuing a life of crime. And can act as a power check and balance against political elites looking to exploit citizens, having their own military branch to do so.

The chantry also keeps a tight leash on lyrium, a dangerous substance that can outright kill or make crazy those who handle it, and keeps it from flooding the market and falling into ill gotten hands, such as cartels who would no doubt use the substance as a poison or explosive.

The chantrys poor reputation among those looking to make some sort of point against organized religion, should not detract from the very real fact that the chantry, not the lords or teryns or viscounts or deshers, do more to help those in the lower reaches of society then anyone else. If the chantry wasn't around, you'd most likely have orzummar's system which not only makes you bound to forever be poor and destitute if you fall on hard times, but makes it a crime to be poor, and a serious offense to offer any sort of help or aid to them, or opportunity to better themselves.

Given that choice, or choosing to have a organization that offers aid and good will to those who need it, I think I'd take the chantry any day.

The Chantry, like any group or organization or belief system, is run by people. Thus, it is inherently flawed even as it does good. Whenever you're talking about a huge organization composed of many people, it's impossible to accurately classify it unless it is extremely banal (ex. they are all living beings).

Yeah I never get the hate either...the Chantry has negatives (Exalted Marches and treatment of mages) but the Qunari are a thousand times worse on both regards and everyone loves them. Hell, the Chantry doesn't even care about most the social issues that people give real organized religions flak for.

As Andar91 stated, it's no more or less corrupt than any other institution on Thedas.

I likely imagine that, not unlike real life, the wealthy of Thedas are the backbone of donations.  I have a cynic's view of "why" they do this (especially in real life) - it is not out of charity, but out of a means to excuse the exploitation they committed against their fellow man in achieving their wealth.

But, like anything... there are nobles who are no doubt genuinely gracious and charitable (to their detriment) - as there are factions within the Chantry that do real harm.  To the common man, yes, it is likely that the Chantry does a great deal more good than bad.

Only a dull mind looks at a group of people and genuinely thinks they are all the same (while many speak in generality which is not the same thing).

Shem? Watch yourself Elf, before you shem yourself.

Spoiler

I agree with the OP. The Chantry might contain some snobby stuck up priests but they do good work.

Still, my loyalty lies with the templars. If Inquisition allows it, I will give them control of the Chantry and their priests will no longer be able to boss them around and dictate what they do.

The Qunari also do a thousand times better in the social area that the OP mentions in praise of the Chantry ;) But really, it's because the Qunari are such a powerful, dangerous and strange enemy that some people just have a soft spot for them... even if they wouldn't want to live under such a regime. It's pure Rooting For The Empire.

As for the Chantry, it does good work and also has done horrible things. The parallelism with real world dominant, organized religions shouldn't be overlooked, though, because the position it fills in Thedas is the same even if the theologies are different.

The chantry does good work as well as bad. Human sumpremacy, drug addicting their templars and creating originally reasonable but now a totalitarian view on magic

It really depends on how much integrity means to you. If you believe the chantry spreads ignorance and lies, would you accept them purely because they can be useful?

The chantry do Good ? My answer is no . The chantry has good peoples who DO Good? yes . Like any other organization , it will have those few peoples who will leave us with a good feeling . But many will not .

The fact that the chantry goal is to spread and bury others religion alone , make it no good .

Good exemple of a priestess of the chantry doing good ? the old lady Mother Hannah in Redcliff . A bad Chantry priestess ? during the city elf origin , there was a priestess who didn't even alert the guard when Vaughan showed up TWICE .

And the Qun forcibly converts local populations, and if you don't accept their ideology, they turn you into mindless laborers. Few people attack the Qun as strongly as they do the Chantry.

The Chantry, like almost everything in Dragon Age, is morally gray. I'm sure that members of their hierarchy go against what the Chant of Light says if it suits them.

As for the priestess in the CE origin, I'm sure Vaughan would have arrested her if she protested too vigorously. He had no qualms about abusing his power. Further, it's worth noting that that priestess is the only one that ministers to the elves.

The Chantry works because it formed as a response to the unique difficulties that the world faces.

If you think that the Chantry is wrong because it protects people from mages, then that is freedom vs. safety debate. I would argue that this seems like a necessity from what we've seen so far.

If you don't like the Chantry because you got beef with organized religion, then maybe you should find more productive things to complain about.

The most important role that the Chantry has, in my opinion, is opposing the Qunari.

Yes , but aren't the Qunari is another continent far far away ? We are talking about the chantry . And I don't agree with the Qunari or their way of doing thing either . Both are a big nuisance in their way of 'spreading' their beliefs .

She could have gone to alert the guard . She just left . She didn't do anything instead .

I would have to agree with the Original poster. However, DA2 gives you a hefty hate of the Chantry force fed to you because the main character is either A, and apostate or B their sister is an apostate. Also the Templars do reflect badly on the Chantry for the most part, but the Chantry itself seems like a fairly decent organization at least they are far more tolerant and less violent then most of the major religions we have in real life.

I don't think most religions are actually outlawed by the Chantry- the Stone/Ancestors definitely isn't, don't think the Qun or the Old Gods or the Chasind religions are either. Just the Creators, which may be a result of the elves in the Dales killing missionaries.

What is the guard in Denerim going to do to oppose the Arl of Denerim anyway?

Nope. My Hawke was an apostate in DA ][, and he loved the Chantry. He went there everyday. Donated to the needy. Praised the Maker for ending the Fifth Blight, and returned the ashes of a long lost sister. Bethany, similarly, does not hate the Chantry. As for the Templars, there were three bad ones, kind of harsh to judge the entire organization by three people. Hell, even at her worst, before she became mentally insane anyway, Meredith did not support half of the extreme measures in Kirkwall, and only went over the deepend because of what another did.

People can be good.   There can definitely be good people who belong to an entity like the Chantry.   However, the Chantry also allows unspeakable atrocities to be committed in its name.   Sorry, I can't ever support someone or some thing that does such terrible things no matter how much other "good" they also might do.

One positive doesn't outweigh one negative.   If someone kills someone, but gives a $1 million bucks to charity, they are still a murderer.

Doing vile things "for the greater good" is just an excuse even in the real world.    Nope, no love for the Chantry or the Qunari.   They are both enemies to the individual and should be condemned for it.

The Qunari may be a continent away right now, but they simply haven't chosen to launch another large scale invasion. If they did, Tevinter would probably fall. The Chantry is the only unifying force in Thedas. It's the only organization that tries to make people's lives better. It's the only organization that can unify the southern nations if the Qunari invade again. Whoever has been the puppet master in the events leading up to Inquisition has obviously been focusing much of their attention on destroying the Chantry's ability to respond to a crisis.

The Chantry is far from perfect, but it's probably the best Thedas can expect to see for awhile.

As for the priestess possibly alerting the city guard, what are they going to do against the heir to the Arling of Denerim? Besides, those guards may not care about a few elves.
