Hey guys, now that multiplayer for DA:I has been confirmed, I just want to know what Bioware thinks of Direct IP option. Will we be able to directly connect to our friends and have us or them play the hosts or do we have to connect to a EA server? I think it would be really nice if this is possible, it'll just make things a lot easier.

This option would be very useful for gamers in South-East Asia and Australia regions. I'm highly doubtful we'll get a dedicated servers there simply because this is a free service.

Divinity: Original Sin has this option and it was easy to have my friend copy-paste a code generated at the time of choosing the option, for Direct IP connection. If you haven't considered this option yet, please do so.

There will be no direct IP entry option as that is basically what happens when a friend invites you to join an MP game. The person inviting is the host and you are the client and the connection takes place just as if you typed in his/her IP.

There are no dedicated servers for Dragon Age Multiplayer.

Can you still play with random people from across the world?

Yes, just like in Mass Effect 3.

But players are still required to use your matchmaking service?

If they're playing on a LAN, does the signal need to leave the network? Is it a problem if both machines share a global IP address? Can two players on a LAN start a game without being connected to the Internet?

For example (because people seem to like examples, even when they don't provide new information), if two players are on a government network, and thus behind a pretty skookum firewall that isn't going to let game data in or out, could they play a MP game?

You will use the DA Multiplayer matchmaking service.

Reading you example a few times, I understand more clearly what you are asking. DA Multiplayer will need to talk to the game servers. We won't have an option for "offline" multiplayer on a private network. A bunch of our multiplayer has server-side functionality and we don't support the servers not being available. This is not a DRM thing, but an architectural decision.

Aren't the rewards, upgrading the character, getting loot and crafting items a huge part of the MP's appeal? Hopefully, the player can only do that if it's verified by DA's server. I'm always annoyed when I play with someone who only got their character and items because they hacked their local data and are able to bring that character online.

Yes, these are the things that happen on the server and not the client and why we don't support "offline" multiplayer like this.
