So far it has been confirmed that, in co-op, there are 12 characters (3 for each one of the classes). It would be nice if each one of these characters could be playable in female or male versions. So many women playing games these days, so why not?

:)

While characters don't have male and female versions. some of the set characters are female. (The Reaver and the Alchemist, at least. Probably others.)

They are unlikely to add the option to change a classes' race or gender. As far as we know, the only customization is for armor and weapons. Given that there are men and women represented, I am unsure how adding the choice to customize gender is specifically for women.

Each class has set characters, with a set gender and (I assume) a set physical appearance. Customization comes in the form of armour and weapons.

With 12 characters and 4 of each class, I'm going to assume that the gender divide will be split down the middle. 6 of each gender, and 2 of each gender for every class.

We've seen the four warriors. There's a female Reaver and what appears to be a female in Templar armour, and then there's a male qunari and a male dwarf legionnaire.

There are 12 characters, four per class.  If they wanted, they could easily make it 2 women and 2 men per class.  We have 4 playable races in single-player, they could also easily split the 12 characters into 3 per race as well.

From the bits of info I've read so far, it sounds like they will be set characters with only weapons and armor aesthetic customizations.  Unlike ME3 multiplayer, though, these set characters allegedly have personalities and will engage in banter as well.

Hm. We might have our first elven templar. Or she could be the reaver. Interesting. It seems like they are going for an equal split with the races.

The Templar and Reaver are female?  And the males are... what, a qunari Champion and a dwarven wild card? Great...

I can't say that I'm enthusiastic about that scenario, but I'm not advocating male and female options either... it's fine the way it is, even if it's not what I'd have chosen.

Remember that they will also be adding more characters through free DLC, so I wouldn't be surprised if eventually there was a Male and Female version of every class.

I think it was confirmed that the Reaver is female in one of the videos.  The Katari (qunari) and Legionnaire (dwarf) are both males.  We can see them on the character selection screen shot that was released.  The Templar looks like she might be female, but it's not confirmed anywhere.

For the rogues, there is an Assassin (human or elf - I can't tell - male), Archer (human or elf - I can't tell - female?), and Alchemist (dwarf female).  I think someone said that they think the fourth is an Artificer (although I'm not sure what the difference is between an artificer and an alchemist).

For the mages, there is a Keeper (elf female), Elementalist (human male), and Necromancer (not sure race/gender).  The fourth mage class is unknown, I think.

So there is a nice variety of characters.  I'm sure everyone will find a character that they like or learn to deal with it.  It's not like there was any way to make everyone happy in this situation.

Yeah, having male and female options doesn't sound like it would work anyway.  They probably don't want two people playing as the same class during a mission.  Or are we allowed to pick the same character as someone else?

I have the feeling that it will be like the Assassin's Creed MP, where you pick your character and then him/her out for the other players.  You just have to be quick on the draw in order to get the character that you want.

Like in ME3 MP, you can pick whatever you want to play as, regardless of what someone else is playing.  I read a multiplayer preview today where the writer was playing as an archer and his three companions were all playing Legionnaires.  He mentioned it actually seemed more difficult having three of the same class in the party, as the diversity in skills and such became more limited in scope.

So... paradoxical banter?
