To be honest, I'm not really torn about this at all. I think it's a great idea. I have no issues with preset MP characters. Plus, it looks like there will be two sword/shield warriors, two two-handed warriors, two dual wield rogues, (likely) two ranged rogues, etc. So there is still an element of choice involved. If you don't like the Assassin? Play as the Alchemist! Now, there will still probably be people who aren't happy with either choice, but them's the breaks, right? You can't be happy with every single decision in every single feature.
For me, the ability to explore lore through 12 NEW characters, each with a distinct background and personality, far exceeds the ability to switch genders or races for any particular class.
Yeah, the benefits look to far out weigh the downsides with having pre-set characters.
The only thing that I am curious about, is what happens if you have a game where everyone is playing as the Reaver, or the Necromancer? Does the game lock off that character to the other party members if you pick it? Does, it give people playing as the same class alternate outfits to distinguish players if no one has alternate armor sets unlocked? Does the party banter change to reflect everyone playing as the same person?
While being faceless mooks (essentially) in ME MP was shallow, it did at least make lore sense to see a person playing as the same class and see them as another, different Batarian soldier, or Krogan Warlord.
