The only reason for limiting 8 abilities to the UI is trying to make a more accessible interface for the Game Controller. I really do not understand why they would limit it to 8 abilities on the PC if it offers more fluidity and variety in the control scheme.

Unless of course, they are being dynamically loaded and cached.

Back on topic, I am quite curious as to how it will pan out on pc if this 8 ability limit turns out to be true. Will there be day-one mods that remove this restriction (Yes, its frostbite, but DAII had no toolset either, and there are plenty of gameplay mods)? Will people simply circumvent it by pausing the game and swapping out abilities in the menu (not if the no-swapping ability mid-combat rumor is true)? Most importantly, will it really diminish the gameplay?

It doesn't matter if there is a restriction on abilities for the PC version. Diablo only has four mapped to the keyboard and two to the mouse; Heroes of the Storm only has a max of 5 abilities (more if you talent them). I've never played Fable on the PC so I don't know how the PC controls would be for it.

But I would prefer to have less abilities and be able to make the abilities the way I want them by levelling them up then having lots of useless abilities.

I actually really loved Fable's PC interface (the first game, anyway. I haven't played the third one on PC, but from what I've seen it's kinda stupid). Spells were cast by holding a modifier key (mine was shift I think?) and then there were two spells mapped to left/right click. You could scroll up and down to change what those two spells were (and you could customize the order). In addition, spells could be bound to the number keys, along with items and expressions.

Back to DAI, I agree with you. I also would rather have less abilities that could be modified instead of a bunch of stuff just hanging around never being touched.

Which DAO abilities were useless?

Your statement only makes sense if there's a clear dichotomy between having fewer abilities, and having lots of useless abilities.

So, just looking at DAO's mages, did they have "lots" of useless abilities? They certainly had lots of abilities.

"Useless" isn't really the right word...more like "not used". In my experience, I usually only use the same few abilities, with a bunch of extra stuff I never touch, and only had because I didn't have anything else to do with the ability points. I understand not everyone plays that way though. For all I know, you actually did use every single spell you had often enough for them to need to take space on your hotbar.

I didn't use the weapon buffs, because I avoided melee combat.

But pretty much everything else, yes. I especially liked the Glyphs.

I only play mage in Dragon Age (support mage because NPCs don't do support well enough, they can't even tank on their own >.>).

In Origins there was no way of powering your abilities, like I would have loved to power up the buffs you get in the Creation tree, specifically the party member buffs. DA2 was better that Origins because I liked the branches of the abilities, you made the one ability stronger, reduce the MP cost or reduce the cast time.

I always put my most used spells next to my left hand on the WASD keys, or the 1,2,3,4 etc (depending on whether or not I use the WASD to move). Every other spell not next to your WASD keys are a little wasted space. You click on them rarely.

Since you only really use a certain number of abilities continuously, why do you need a bar filled with abilities you rarely use?

They're situational. Sometimes you really need a Stun right now. If your access to abilities is limited, then you either won't always have one available, or you'll have to spend one of your slots on an ability you only use in emergencies.

I'd rather not have to make that choice.

Such a shame that DA2's "upgrades" were, going by stats, only bringing spells back to DAO's level of power. Like, Walking Bomb or Crushing Prison or Barrier.

Oh, and I use my mouse to trigger everything. My hand is on the spacebar, not WASD. I don't drive; I move to point.

For example, with my Glyph mage, I cast Glyph of Repulsion and Glyph of Paralysis nearly every fight. That's 2 abilities used, and no damage done yet. I also had Spell Wisp up most fights, that character was also a Spirit Healer, so that's at least three other abilities to have handy. And she still doesn't have any offensive spells.

Welp, it depends where you live

As far as I know PC is the most popular here, in Russia (Sony is probably the second favourite and almost no one knows what the hell Nintendo is). People've been using keyboard and mouse instead of controller unless they play some sportsgame, race or other controller-oriented games since the very beginning

But of course, you may go one with "console controller master race" bullshit and treat PC gamers like inferiors, it's up to you to be a jerk or not

I actually only play video games on a gaming laptop and only use a keyboard and mouse. I suck at using a controller :]

I'm just not stressing out over the UI. I have faith because I enjoyed the DA2  UI and the UI for combat in DAO was good too. At least for me.

Panicking for nothing or not, it is pretty odd that they refuse to talk about the PC interface but do not hesitate to talk about the PS4, when they've only shown the xbox.

User

Will we see the DAI interface on PS4 soon? I guess it's very close to the Xbox one, but I'm curious about it...

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw

It's pretty much identical, just the button legend is different.

I'm sure it will be fine, but I still want to see it.

This isn't saying any more than we've heard about the PC...He's just stating it's identical to Xbox, and it's been stated that PC UI is different than Xbox. PS has been as overlooked as PC has at this point.

I'm not worried.

I'd be livid if they did something dumb, but why would they?

Right, and nothing is stopping them from saying "Oh it's very similar to DA2" for the PC interface too, but they don't. It makes me curious. An interface isn't spoiler material.

I agree, it would be a no buy for me if they did something stupid like Skyrim. At least Skyrims was moddable.

"Different" is a lot more vague than "almost identical" even if both descriptions only take one sentence.

If your hands aren't on WASD then they are on 1, 2, 3 and 4 etc for me.

Clicking on all abilities is too slow for me, I need my combat faster :P.

I only issue commands while paused. Including move commands.

And during combat I typically let time advance only in tiny imcrements (often less than a second). So I can't move my hand from the pause key.

You're not the only PC gamer in the world.

But I am A PC gamer.

They should not design their UI to suit the majority.  They should design their UI to be sufficiently flexible that it will serve the maximum possible.

That you don't want to use more than 4 abilities (and apparently didn't in the previous games) is no reason to deny the rest of us that option.

That's all true, but there was nothing stopping them saying, "Yeah, MP is in, we'll show you/talk about it when we're ready."  It's a decision they've made, rightly or wrongly.

With regards to the KB/M UI specifically, they're - hopefully - just fine tuning and waiting till the point of being able to 'show, not tell', which was their mantra for reveals since the start.
