I like his work on the doom engine and approach to raycasting.

Even though he is the devil.

Even while not playing or enjoying necessarily some of the games he's made or been affiliated with, it's impossible not to recognize his influence on virtually every conceivable genre except probably FPS.

Clicking on that gaming icon has given me much joy.
You mean Illuminati?Jack Tretton, especially with his approach for E3 2013.
Clearly, the greatest gaming icon of all time is Sergey Titov, for having produced two of the greatest games ever made: Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, and The War Z. ![]()
In all seriousness, I'm not quite sure what constitutes a gaming icon, but if you put a gun to my head, I'd probably go with Avellone like others here have already mentioned, as well as Gunpei Yokoi for his work on the Metroid series and the Gameboy. I'm sure there's dozens of others, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head, and I'm too lazy to think of more.

IIRC, it was Miyamoto's idea to make Metroid Prime an FPS, and that game went on to become one of the Game Cube's best-selling games, so he's even had something of an impact on FPS games as well.
Shiggy is the man.
