Hey guys. I noticed that my graphics options, achievements, and
difficulty options reset every single time I quit
and reopen the game. If I want to unlock
Hardcore I have to beat Saren on my level 60 save every single time I open the game. If I want to unlock Insanity I'd have to beat Saren,
unlock Hardcore and playthrough again without
ever quitting the app!

Not only that, but my achievements are
disappearing every time I quit too! I've looked to see if people had
similar problems, but the closest person with my problem here
didn't hint at his achievements/difficulties getting reset.

Thankfully
my saves don't get deleted or anything, so I still have my level 60
character ready to import into ME2, but I REALLY want to play on insanity before I move onto ME2 [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/sad.png[/smilie].

Any help would be appreciated.

Problems with achievements often are a problem with the file they're stored in. However, your graphics options are a separate file from your Achievements/unlocks, so that is very strange indeed.

I would hope there would be a simpler way to fix this than re-installing, but since I have no idea what that is, re-installation is all I can recommend trying. :/

mmm yeah. I did try that first (backing up my saves of course).

Are the unlocked achievements what determine what difficulty is unlocked? And which is the file the achievements are kept in? Maybe I could take a look for anything strange.

One thing I forgot to mention is these saves have been through at least 3 different OSs as I've been formattting from XP to Win7 Beta to the RC to retail etc. Maybe I need a fresh new achievement file?

I believe the achievements are what determine unlocked difficulties, yes. They're stored in Profile.MassEffectProfile in My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save (I've seen the top of that path may have changed in Win7? Anyhow, you'd know better than I)

Graphics options are in Mass Effect\\Config\\BioEngine.ini

Hmm, an hour or two ago, I was searching through useful forum posts in the technical help section, and I stumbled across this, though "damn, that sucks," and continued to play ME.  Shortly there after, my PC crashed while in the Ilos trench where you meet Vigil.  A short while later after beating the ending for the second time with my now level 60 character, I discovered I have the exact same problem (except for the graphics thing, I don't have that resetting).  :(

I've always had an issue with crashing in three specific areas, Xawin, Antibaar, and the short trench where you meet Vigil.  For whatever reason, my PC always crashes after five minutes or so in these areas.  This was especially annoying on Xawin and Antibaar, but less so on Ilos.  I've never really had an issue with crashing, sure, it puts you back a bit, but with a ton of saves and patience, you get through it.  Now I'm annoyed, as I have the exact same situation as the OP, and it happened thirty minutes before finishing playthrough 2 of my only character.

I can still load the saves fine, which leads me to believe that importing the character to ME2 will be alright.  However, as ME2 isn't out yet, I'm not positive.

Any advice other than attempting to reinstall?

I managed to fix this by deleting my Profile.MassEffectProfile file. This made the game create a new one and it kept my achievements and difficulty unlocks! The graphics seem to have stuck too although I'm not sure how that file might relate to it.

Thanks for giving me that idea Kloreep. I'm going to play through on Insanity before ME2 hits!

I've got the exact same problem as well, and I had all the weapon achievements and everything for my super soldier Shepard. There's a user-made achievement editor here if you want to edit your achievements back in without having to replay the game again.
