Hello forum denizens, I wanted to share and maybe get some feedback on my little project.  I decided that Liara has to have a carbon fiber armor set so she can match my Shepard's armor for some missions (as his waifu).   Anyway, I'm aware of Mrqbasic's N7 armor he made for Liara but it didn't have my beloved carbon fiber...therefore I decided to make one myself.

Mercifully, Ottemis did most of the heavy-lifting and I was able to use her 4k textures for Liara's white armor as a base.  Thank you kindly for that and all the other work you've done.

Please let me know what you think.  I know I need to make some finishing touches and mess with the spec some more to get the gloss to look decent.  Right now it's all matte because the alpha layer on the spec was washing out some of the textures too much.  Also the N7 logo still looks off but the more I fiddle with it in Liquify the more I manage to distort it.  I'll figure it out eventually.

BTW, how are people making the selection screen images with the original poses?  I'm assuming that's beyond my ability but I'm curious nonetheless.

UPDATE: Download the mod at the ME3 Nexus!

Thanks for any and all feedback

I'd rescale the carbon so that it's the same size on all the individual pieces of the armor ingame.
When you make it all the same size on the texture it'll look off ingame because the size of items/wrap isn't always the same per piece.

You can use 3dsmax to preview diffuse texture changes it's easier to test texture changes for the carbon (extract the mesh, open it and apply the modified diff to it).

As to the selection screen, I usually just recolour the originals but you can do a render in 3d program too.

Hey it's Ottemis!  You're right, I should partition the carbon textures for the different surfaces.  I noticed that some were slightly different sizes but I was lazy and made most of it the same.  I'll see if I want to break it out properly soon.  But in the meantime I'll try to figure my way around 3ds Max trial version.  I've never used it before so this will be interesting but hopefully it will make this a little easier.

Is there anything ME specific to be done in 3ds Max or is it pretty straight-forward?

It's me! =P

You'll need to download a script to be able to import PSK's extracted with ME3Explorer's Meshplorer (or umodel). Try and get 2012, it's best for the scripts etc. Might help to take a look at my hair tutorial, it covers the basics of working with 3ds so might prove useful (import/interface/applying textures/export etc).
You'd only really need to export the mesh via me3explorer or umodel, import with actor X import script into 3ds, apply your modified texture and it helps to know how to rotate etc. Pretty basic stuff, most of it is in the guide =)

Thanks again, Ottemis.  I suspect it will take me some time to figure out 3ds Max but your tutorial and others should make it much easier.  I'll try to find the 2012 version of 3ds Max if I can.  If not would there be a huge issue using the 2015 version?

I'm beginning to see why few people made carbon fiber textures--they show distortions so easily =/.  Now I want to fix the most jarring ones but I doubt I can fix all of them.

Big chance the scripts won't work for 2015. You'd have to check it out.

Whew, I finally got some time to play with 3ds Max and I'm certainly warming up to it!  Thanks for pointing me in that direction because it has made this workflow much easier.  I can make minor adjustments rapidly by assigning my working PSD to the active texture on the main mesh and I just put the viewing window on my other monitor.  That way everytime the PSD is saved the 3ds Max project automatically updates and I can see the results nearly in realtime.  This is so helpful for slight adjustments like fixing distortions which I will have to do soon.  It doesn't have the spec or bump maps but it's great for diffuse work which is most of it anyway.

Well I've improved it somewhat (and tweaked it a lot) and I believe it's good enough for an initial release.  I will try to improve it later if I have the time to do so.

You can find the mod on the Nexus.  Big thanks to Ottemis obviously.  If you think I should host the file anywhere else please let me know.

Can you add a link to the project the textures originated from on the Nexus?

Also, please don't allow redistribution of my textures without my explicit permission. It tends to snowball out of control and proper creditation gets lost on consecutive projects more often than not. It's in my permission rules.

Done.  DIdn't even realize that mod was on the Nexus because I grabbed it all from your thread  :P.

Apparently I can't leave this alone.  I decided to make a custom crest brace breather thing for Liara to match this armor.  Now the breathers happen to be used by all of the outfits so if you want to effect only this outfit you'll have to select certain PCC files to change.  I'll probably include a .MOD with some instructions for selection to make it easier.  I'll release this soon as an optional file for the mod on the Nexus.

I just used the original files, upscaled it to 1024x1024 and skin'd it.  Here's a preview:

For those interested, I've updated the mod on the Nexus with the new Breather and a quick video I made with a few cutscenes from the Mars mission.  Also thanks to Mr.Ph11 for his endorsement.

Yep, it was great. Having a few setbacks with my game right now, but I'll get there again!

I love the look of the armor. Anyone know if there is anything like that out there for femshep?

Thanks. I don't know if there is anything exactly like it out there since I just stumbled upon the look after experimentation.  You can change the material settings in-game to change how light reflects off the surface of Shepard's armor but it won't look quite the same.

I'm working on a small update.  It's mostly small fixes and corrections but I decided to make one texture change: a perforated leather base layer.  N7 is pretty premium after all but apparently not enough for Alacantra (I tried a suede texture but it looked silly).  It's only visible on close-ups in conversations and such for the most part.

This is a preview:

Not sure if anyone is still on this page but,

I really like the look of it however, am I right in saying that all I need to do is launch Texmod (the usual way) and then select this TPF and then it'll work?

because for me it doesn't, I've got the 1.3 version of off the nexus and all it contains is the TPF and so I just assumed that it was to be used like all of the other TPFs I use and so that's how I've tried to use it, however it doesn't change anything. I might have an overlapping texture, if this replaces the Black shadowbroker armour in the DLC pack then I've got something overwriting it, but I thought this replaces her alternate appearance and so I'm a little bit confused as to why it isn't.

This is for her basegame alternate armor.
If you've permanently replaced it before using the toolset, you cannot replace it with Texmod straight out of the box any longer.

If not permanently replaced before, are you sure Texmod is functional? It does not function with overlays like steam/origin ingame/raptor and/or might be blocked by your virus-scanner.

I thought it was that, and I don't think that I've even tried to replace it. In order for it to work now do I have to "clean" ME3 in origin?

Manually throw away any basegame file in your CookedPC folder (..\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3\BIOGame\CookedPCConsole) that has a date newer than 4/25/2012. If you have a modded coalesced, back it up.
In Origin, rightclick on ME3 and select either Check for Update or Repair Game to redownload the removed files.

If you don't see any files in CookedPC newer than 4/25/2012, try just throwing away BioH_Liara_01.pcc and BioH_Liara_01_Explore.pcc then hitting Check for Update or Repair Game in Origin to redownload them to make sure Liara's alt armor is vanilla.
