People + power - accountability= bad things happening.
That's just as true for mages as it is for everyone else.

But... But... Mages are the only people in the world that matter!!! ![]()
But what of the mages who aren't strong enough to learn those fire spells? Or resistance to fade spirits? Do they stay in there for life? Yes its sad that the mages lose many human rights, but you also must remember the amount of destruction just one mage can do. young or old. I as a regular human may not know my own strength when holding someones hands, but they might accidentally light someone on fire. does the risk outweigh the moral injustice? I think the risk does.
I absolutely believe the mages are - or should be - screwed.
If they stay in the Circles - sieges will render their magic useless and they'll die.
But, even worse... if they leave - they will have no means of transporting the vast quantity of tomes and magical items with them (along with necessities)
As we saw with the Circle tower that's destroyed after Asunder (starts with a "D") - the Templars intelligently (for their strategy) destroyed everything in that Circle tower leaving all the knowledge and power that Circle had gathered rendered null.
The mages made a terrible decision and I truly hope Bioware makes them pay for their foolishness.
Note: Pro-Reform/don't think the Circles work/mages should be treated better.. .blah blah blah (since not supporting violent rebellions instantly means you support oppressing mages here on the BSN - home of fantasy fanatics)
Everyone. not just Templars. Every person has the potential to destroy and be just like "bad" Mages, and "bad" Templars.
Just an example. Any person or group of power can abuse it. Templars can destroy a village just as much as a group of mages can. In fact, we've seen it in a video of DA:I.
Mage freedom would literally be the worst thing for Thedas.

The only difference is a mage can be a walking WMD while a Templar can't
@HaHa365: If a single Templar walked into your town waving a torch - and a mage walked into your town throwing fireballs - which one would you be more scared off?
They're not the same.
1 Common =/= 1 Solider =/= 1 Templar =/= 1 Mage
How about they make it optional. If you feel you are a weak mage and consider your gift a curse then feel free to go to the Circle of Magi for the rest of your life. If I feel that I am a powerful mage with the ability to handle myself and/or recieve teaching from a family member mage then still out of my affairs.
Because everyone who isn't strong enough to control their magic would want to go to the circle. You have metal detectors at court houses not because everyone will bring a weapon, but because everyone has the potential of bringing a weapon, and that's why the Mage's are kept in the circle.

But you can't argue against the fact that both groups have the potential to cause great destruction. Yet, prior to the Templar-Mage war, not many considered the Templars a threat (other than mages) but they were presented in a different light. Perception and fear are powerful tools.
@Medhia_Nox Ah.... but now you downplay what abilties the Templars have. I doubt highly, if a Templar came to destroy a village, they would be waving a torch around. Not to mention, someone trying to kill you...is someone trying to kill you..be it magic or sword.

I'll be scared of both equally.A man in full plate and armed is a a lot harder to kill than a single unarmed mage,at least the latter can be killed if overwhelmed.

Yes but a battalion of Templars destruction would never be on par with an equal number of Mage's destruction. I am not arguing that one cannot cause destruction I am more saying that one Templar is nowhere near as destructive as one mage.

Yet one cant cause a storm of fire from a distance. or freeze you in place. you can not equalize the two of them because they are not, and so how can you treat someone equally when they are inherently not equal.
@cjones91: 20 brave commoners could overwhelm a knight - their anti-magic abilities are useless - 20 brave commoners could not overwhelm a mage (well, maybe if he were sleeping I suppose).
Mages will devise a way to devour other mages' power, probably by killing and eating them, the way companies do to other companies in real life when they are deregulated. If they have access to the victim's mind in the fade there is a way to steal it. So there would be an oligopoly of very extremely powerful mages who get many concessions out of governments and actively prevent other mages from getting too powerful.

We hear stories all the time of mages being killed by mobs,a single mage can and will get taken down thanks to superior numbers. And I'm not saying they're equal, but you have to put this in the perspective of the people in Thedas who will be the ones dealing with this sort of thing.

...and one could come for you, in the middle of the night, and take you from everything you've ever known or ever loved. Simply because you have the potential to be a threat to others. If this logic would be placed elsewhere, would it still be so fair? Should you lock up an heir, because he could potentially be corrupt and destroy a kingdom?

The lore disagrees with you.

A group of grown men come toghether in large numbers, purchase weapons and armors forged of the best steel, receive training and then destroy a village.
Connor, eight year old boy, has a bad dream and destroys a village.
That is the difference.
@cjones91: Source? Doesn't happen in two games or three books so far (The Stolent Throne, Asunder or Masked Empire) - didn't happen in that anime cartoon - was it a Codex entry?

That logic is placed everywhere.
The law applies restriction to our freedoms because we all have the potential to be a threat to others. The restrictions of mages are simply harsher because they are a much greater threat.
