Why wasn't this post made in the modules forum when it's directly about modding?

Modders certainly aren’t doing this for fortune and groupies.

:o I was told there would be fortune and groupies!

The stuff that breaks the engine is already inside it and I wish we had anything we could do about it.

Characters warping back to where you started walking from if you use keyboard movement instead of mouse

Visual effects totally ignore the delay amount so that they all explode/go off in one giant cluster **** rather than the careful sequenced event you planned.

Rubber-banding happens to me occasionally using the mouse as well.

As for visual effect timing; DURATION_TYPE_INSTANT effects ignore delays, however DURATION_TYPE_TEMPORARY effects can be coaxed to accept them (most of the time). I have some VFX that consist of a chain of visual, light and sound effects all with varying delays, wrapped up into a single SEF. Applied to a location as a temporary effect preserves those delays as intended. You just have to make sure that the various VFX parts don't loop endlessly.

2:1 effort vs outcome

If you enjoy the challenge of the effort, learn new things in the process, and achieve an outcome that matches your expectations exactly, then it's time well spent.

If you then put your results out there for the community to use, it means that others don't have to go through the effort at all. If ten content creators all work on ten different experimental things, then use each others' content as well as their own, then they're each ahead of the game (2:10 effort vs outcome).

I never said it was not worth the effort: making things work outside of the box. I was just asking if things are spinning away from the idea that the best solutions are the simplest.

One might like to imply my direction is criticism - its not. I'm just asking questions - from outside the box.

It seems to me that the effort that I may expend in solving a problem has multiple outcomes. First, I solve the thing I wanted to solve, which may at first seem be a minor thing (such as turning lights on and off, which I built my own solution for in the Silverwand Sample Campaign a loooong time ago). Second, because the code is viewable by others it hopefully reduces the time they need to spend to achieve the outcome in their project.  Third, I learn tricks and techniques that can be applied to other problems. Fourth, once solved I often find other more significant applications for the solution. Using the lights as an example, I figured out how to turn lights on and off for ambience alone, but once I had done so it was easy to apply that to having unlit torches in dungeons and moving your party through a dark dungeon can be more fun than an ever-lit one. I also enjoy shooting fire arrows at a torch to light in from a distance.

So in short, I never worry too much about the amount of time spent solving something, since I often feel later that the time was well spent.

I will admit however, that perhaps this attitude plays a role in why my largest project remains unfinished.

Regards

I would be interested to see that project.  Please keep at it.
