This seems to disproportionately gimp mages since all of their damage can be resisted in comparison to physical damage. A 2H warrior will not have 8 active abilities. A mage will have more than 8 abilities.
Physical damage is *resisted* by enemies. You mean that some enemies in Origins and DA2 were potentially IMMUNE to certain damage types (which was a problem). Granted, there were weapons in DA2 that converted melee and ranged damage into a magical damage type, so you could also run up against that problem on a non-mage.
If the *immunity* problem isn't there (and they don't have situations where you're fighting 6 different types of enemies all of which are immune or highly resistant to a different damage type), then it shouldn't be a big deal. You set your loadout when you get to the area, run the area, get to a new area, reconnoiter, reset your loadout. Sounds like actual fun to me.
Now, if they wanted to be REALLY awesome they'd let you save several different loadouts so that switching would be just a matter of picking one from a list . . .

God damn it BioWare, my faith was nearly restored. Pre-order cancelled. I won't get fooled again.

I recognize that not everyone will be happy with the change, but better to let you know about it now than a surprise later.
Which is ironic, as we only got to know this just 3 months before the release ![]()
Their design is bad, and they know it.

Ability count clarity: DAI is about roles, planning ahead and making tactical decisions. Potions, ability choice, gear, party composition.
Is it also about spamming the same abilities over and over in the fifteen minute long dragon fight...
IMO, this is mage gimping if nothing else because mages are the ones most dependent on abilities.
First they streamline the schools of magic.
Next they introduced focus.
Now the fixed the amount of abilities a character can use.
Are they being anti-mage or something ? Are they promoting ability spamming ? Boss fights can take very long. Do we have to keep spamming the same 8 abilities in a Dragon / Wyvern / Pride Demon fight ?
Letting us know now ? Now is 3 months before release. Not earlier. So Bioware know they are gimping us. On purpose. They could have mentioned this design decision AGES ago, since it affects every platform. Nope. Got to sneak in the gimpy stuff late, I suppose.
Look, health regen restrictions made sense. We are not Wolverine. But we are not stupid mages who cannot cast more than 8 spells in a fight. That would be like a person not knowing how to string more than 8 different sentence types in a verbal debate or a martial artists who cannot use more than 8 moves in a fight.
Ridiculous.
Well, let's see. I can get the 32 abilities is enough if they did it from the get go in DA games. They didn't. Additionally, what if you quickslotted abilties that the enemies will be immune to ? What if you quickslotted all 8 with fire spells and you meet an enemy that is immune to fire ?
....I'm sorry, why would you EVER do that? That's so painfully bizarre I don't know what to say. I've never ever specialised so much, in Origins or DA2 that I only ever had one option available from the whole party.
But taking the situation as true, you'd, um, remap. Cause apparently you CAN do that in combat. It'll be a pain, I assume, but it can be done.
I am not unhappy with the change myself but I do believe that BioWare waited way too long telling us this. They should have told us about the limit months ago, as soon as they actually showed us gameplay. This close to release I feel they have been baiting the people who don't like the change. I may not agree with the stance people take against the limit but an opinion is an opinion and BioWare should have known that a change this big would send this forum in a frenzy. I believe they should have told us about this change BEFORE opening pre-orders.Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw now

Exactly, after people had already placed their pre-orders.

Would you prefer three months or before, or when you start the game?

Considering mages were overpowered in the previous games, I don't see a problem with nerfing mages a bit.

You can't do it IN COMBAT, but you can do it in the field. So you don't need to go to camp.

Maybe they didn't want to confirm a design decision they knew would make a portion of the fanbase mad without being absolutely sure that's the solidified version of the final game? And they may have solidified the final combat design months ago, but it wasn't that long ago if so.
They didn't have to confirm anything at all if they didn't want to. Why would they now and risk cancelled pre-orders? If they were really sneaky they would wait until the game's released to show the PC UI.
tch, 8 abilities max, such idiocy, no matter mods can fix this nonsense
You mean I actually have to use my brain and think about things? IN A VIDEO GAME?
THAT'S IT! PRE-ORDER CANCELLED! OMFG U GUYZ!

6 to 9 months before

I would ****** prefer they just not place dumb limitations.
I'm completely fine with just 8. *shrugs*
it's not bad but what he said is pretty much same as was said in my previous post: http://forum.bioware...8#entry17220758Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw now

No mods for Frostbite as far as I know
Wow, way to gimp combat bioware. This is complete bs, how the hell are we supposed to play a mage efficiently? Who the hell made this design decision?
No mods for Frostbite as far as I know
you can make it difficult but not impossible
No mods for Frostbite as far as I know
Its not impossible to mod Frostbite even though they act like it is
6 to 9 months before
Well, yeah.
But that isn't going to happen. The UI isn't finalized until very late in the dev cycle.
So they tell us as early as they can.
