I know that once I pass 8 abilities on one of my classes, I'll be forced to "survive the battle" with the 8 abilities I got on hand or just reload, switch abilities up and try again. That to me, seems to be the most obvious outcome, and I don't need to play the game to derive it.

Or you could, you know, analyze the situation, pay attention to what the locals and then environment are telling you, and choose the right loadout for the job.

I've been doing it since 1998. I'm really not sure what the difficulty is, here.

The UI looks very clean, but the eight slots is a bit of a letdown. What am I going to do with the other 4 buttons on my mouse?

I wonder if gamepad/console design may have influenced the number of abilities. Laidlaw also states DA is about planning ahead. Really? I never saw it that way. I thought it was about planning in real time on the spot. There were no advantages to planning ahead other than supplying yourself with the right consumables.

They've been stating from the beginning that they want DAI to be more about planning ahead. That's why health doesn't regenerate. That's why there's a limit on how many potions you can carry. That's why there's limited healing spells. That's why focus exists. It may not be how you see it, or how DAO or DA2 worked, but this is the vision of DAI.

Having spells mapped to your quickbar is =/= to your tactic execution, since if you simply have the ability you can just set it in your tactics and it'll take place normally, it doesn't run a check on what you have in your quickbar lol.

Where'd you get this information from?  Because from some of what they showed us of the tactics UI, it seemed like (on the consoles at least) the setup of both was kind of the same, i.e. you'd set your active abilities, and those abilities would become available as tactics.

Yeah sure.. My mage will be useless in some encounters because I didn't put the right spells and can't change it mid-combat. No problem, I still have other 3 party members i can use and I'll just let the AI tactics for my mage to handle itself.

After the battle, I'll probably have some idea of what spells I need for a particular area/boss.

If you feel that getting angry at the developers is "disrespectful" then I guess you have splendid time reading and making reviews :3 "10 out of 10!", otherwise it's just rude, isn't it?

That isn't what he's saying

You just need to take the time to switch loadouts

Oh yes, I can totally see my charcater going "right I won't need Mind blast and Horror for this next room so I'll forget those two and instead I'll remember Blizzard and Firestorm, because I'm a tool who can't know more than 8 spelles at once"

So the Inquisitor is a Shadock, but with a 8 cell brain insted of 4...noice !

It's like switching to the right Pokémon before a trainer battle.

Because of course, knowledge works EXACTLY THE SAME as superpowered animals kepts in boxes !

Mike specifically did say "DAI" (not just DA).  Other parts of this includes things like health regeneration being altered and stuff like that and changes to healing system.

It boils down to this:

The devs do not need your approval before they make design decisions in the game they are making.

You do not need to support a game that makes decisions you do not like.

If, however, you have nothing better to do than scream and rage at the devs, accuse others of not having "reason or logic" because they like the change, or continually post hate over and over and over again... then perhaps you might need a new hobby.

Buy the game. Don't buy the game. It's up to you.

But for christ's sake, quit trying to ruin it for the people that still are going to buy the game.

This precludes the possibility of hating a game and intelligently criticizing it without being rude, which is ridiculous.

I write plenty about games I dislike without insulting the devs behind the game.

Previous 2 games. You could have a completely empty quickbar and still have your skills available in your tactics.

So I would have to adjust my tactics every single time as well?

Wonderful.

Considering mages were overpowered in the previous games, I don't see a problem with nerfing mages a bit.

Mages were overpowered in DA:O. They weren't overpowered in DA II.

If BioWare wants to balance the power level of mages with other classes, limiting them to only 8 abilities at a time is an odd way to go about it. The powers are still there, you just have to reload.

"But sir, do you really want to retreat? They're just skeletons..."

"Uh... yes. I think I left the oven on back in camp. And the hair curler. And the water running."

"... The **** is a 'hair curler'?"

HAHAHA.  Beautiful.

Use them for the rest of the hotbar? Abilities aren't the only things that exist on the bar; there's potions, and the different commands in tactical view.

I kind of wonder what happens if we give a companion an advise (tactics I mean) to use that one ability, but then forget about it and remove it from the 8 active slots and replace with another one yet forget to change the command

I already said the concern was understandable. It's not the topic of your post but the manner you're choosing to express it.

I am being direct, straight to be point and blunt. This is me, this is who I am, offline or online. I am not one for superficial politeness and political correctness. I also care not if other people act the same.

Nevertheless, since you asked nicely, I will humor you.

Here are my gripes with the 8 ability in combat restriction.

  1. It does not make the gameplay more tactical rather it encourages meta gaming and quickloading
  2. It will make boss fights and continual wave fights boring chores due to the fact the players will have to spam 8 abilities.
  3. It removes one of the main advantages and selling points of the mage class and that is the flexibility to deal with anything and everything via spells.
  4. It makes no sense lore-wise. This is not D&D where mages use scrolls or tomes or grimoires to augment themselves. Additionally, warriors and rogues are not known to use fighting manuals for their abilities either.

Here are my praises for the PC UI

  1. It looks beautiful. It looks very much like Object Dock / Mac Dock.
  2. The icons are very clear in that one can guess what they do from looking at them.

In summary.

  1. The UI has form but lack functionality and flexibility.
  2. The 8 ability in combat restriction is IMO, a poor game design choice.

What Bioware Should Do

  1. Interview with game designers and UI designers where the clearly explain why they have gone this route. Laidlaw and Darrah might not know the whole picture and the tiny details when it comes to this.
  2. Release or show the players a video where the UI is being used in a boss fight against a Wyvern or a Dragon or a Pride Demon and demonstrate that no, this will not be a chore as we all fear / suspect.
  3. Explain that this, does not, in any way, due to multiplayer or consoles. I can see now that it isn't, it is a game design choice that affects everything but many others are not.
  4. Or make a post on BSN or Bioware blog or Dragon Age website explaining everything about this in great detail.

What They Are Doing Now

  1. Using Twitter, with its own gimped 140 character limit to explain things which obviously, on their part, need a lot of explaining.
  2. Diverting and misdirecting questions by saying "This is announced now so it will not be a surprise".

I hope Bioware takes this feedback into consideration. It is polite, it lays out all the concerns we have and it suggests what they can do about it.

Cheers.  B)

8 slots is not bad, actually. It would be bad if sustained abilities were still in, but they are not...I think peeps are just over-reacting.

I think it is just us PC folk being aggressive because we are often an after-thought, since from the get-go they have been taunting this as CONSOLE CONSOLE CONSOLE (remember, xbone is getting priority DLC).

Coupled with this, and being "restricted" to 8 (like consoles) even though it is obvious we can have a billion-skillion, we just got super duper angry...I know I kinda did. Now, I don't mind it at all.

I do still fear that I am an after-thought, being a PC gamer :(

And that's why the inquisitor now has a cyborg brain with 8 interchangeable memory slots, instead of just remembering all of the abilities they've learned.

So basically, the 8 talents limitation doesn't effectively apply to a character you're not directly controlling, as long as you actually bother to set up tactics for that character? But once you take control of him, you're back to having only 8 available to choose from?

You sure about that?

Just as a note, hiding it for as long as possible would be hiding it until November 17 (or not sharing it at all).  Which would definitely be inappropriate.

I don't mean to come across as complaining, though.  I'm stating that it was broken into two tweets because that's the medium.

Bioware was expecting some negativity and confusion about the change yet no combat or UI details or Q and A were prepared and put on the website. Bioware have said how in the past they have failed to communicate properly yet no one thought to give clear details about the change but instead put out a misdirecting tweet instead.

You're right.  The videos don't give you the full picture.  I'm also basing it off of playing the previous 2 games.  It's really not that complicated.  I'm not stoked about having only 8 mapped abilities, but that's what it is.  I definitely don't think it's a ****** Armageddon like it's being made out to be.

Heh. It's not like I'm hanging on to a board that says "the end is nigh". I was just saying that I find their reasoning behind limiting active ability use which is "It encourages tactical play" absolutely non-sensical, and borderline insulting(not that I am). Sorry if you felt like I was targeting you or something You just happened to raise a point that I felt like I had to respond to like my life depended on it.

Jars full of bees!

I think all those potion slots etc. get quickslots as well.  I have 12 buttons on my mouse, so it'll be just about perfect . . . assuming I can map pause to a mouse button as well.  I don't need no keyboard!
