Yes.  Does that mean the 8 ability limit is an in-setting reality?

That's what I'm asking.  Should my character be aware of the limit?

I dunno. Is your character aware of the fact that his existence is utterly controlled by an outside entity? (serious question)

Why should your character be aware of a gameplay mechanic?

So my absent-minded character gets killed because of a metagame restriction?

Or am I just not allowed to roleplay when exploring?

If it's a metagame restriction, you shouldn't be role-playing with it anyway. And if it's an in-universe limitation, being absent-minded about it should have the potential to get your character killed.

Well, just be glad it's nowhere near as bad as Skyrim UI.  Now that was totally terrible and unplayable.  Now that's what you call totally "consolized".

This argument with him will just go in circles

Yeah, I'm getting that feeling.

Looks great. :) There are not enough slots for abilites though.

The best response I've read all day.

It even has a smiley face, run you beautiful soul before the BSN claims your sanity.

This post sums up 99% of the thread. I am jealous.

This is how you give feedback! Start with a positive, politely state your negative. Done!

No, because even a brand-new newbie wizard with an 11 int (the minimum to cast 1st-level spells) knows 9 first-level spells and can cast ONE.

But keep on spouting off about unrelated things that have no bearing on each other.   You do that all the time anyway.

What edition are you referencing?

In 1st edition AD&D, a Magic-User with a 9 Intelligence has only a 35% chance to learn any spell.  But you are correct, he will know a minimum greater than 1 (it's 4 - I looked it up).

But by the same token, a high-level Magic-User with a low Int could well cast all of his spells in a single encounter.

The minimum intelligence to cast spells by level was added later.

But, again, these restrictions have an in-game explanation.  The Mage in question knows that he can only cast some of his spells, and he knows why.  Is that the same in Inquisition?  Will the characters be aware of the 8 ability limit?

He's not.  I am merely the mechanism by which his choices are implemented.

They're his choices.  For the purposes of choosing what happens during gameplay, I don't exist.

Why should your character be aware of a gameplay mechanic?

If he's expected to make decisions based on it, yes.

How does he decide which 8 abilities to have available as he walks through the mountains?  Why does he think he can only have 8?

I liked Skyrim's UI.  Because it didn't interfere with my decision-making.

Sylvius' idea of "playing a game" actually translates to "writing a novel that somehow involves die rolls".  Limitations, other people . . . all these interfere with the expression of pure imagination that (somehow) "should be" gaming.

Or, more accurately, he wants to write a novel without having any notion of what's going to happen--but also somehow without having anyone else supply that information, because that implies a ton of "limitations".

I want to create a character and set him loose in the world to see what happens.

And it provided rational reason why only spells could be cast at a time (2 hands!). Yup?

Well, in the words of the great philosopher Jagger, "You can't always get what you want."

There is a Tab button. We can switch Tabs apparently from the looks of things. No official confirmation though but pdusen pointed it out.

I'll laugh (and then cry) if it's the same as Tab in DAO/DA2.

No, but that's not UI related.

That's gameplay related, and Skyrim's combat gameplay sucks.  Skyrim needs VATS.

No healing magic... Limited number of potions slots... No level scaling for area... And now limited 8 ability slots...

Its like Bioware served us a delicious breakfast spread and then farted over it. I can deal with the first three but the last one.. I don't know...

How can you expect me to play with just 8 abilities for 150 hours... how bloody boring is that...

What is wrong with you Bioware. DAI is not ME3. These genres are completely different. We do not need medigel (potion) capacity increase in DAI. When I can carry 3 full suits of armor in my backpack, I can most certainly carry more than 8 potions.

In mass effect there are at max 8 skill trees for a class and one (fitness) is always passive. Which is why there are 8 quickslots. 7 for abilities and one for medigel. But that should not be the case for DAI. Warrior playthroughs are the most boring in DA2. Even at level 24 I just have 7 activated abilities, 3 sustained and and god knows how many passive. Every battle its the same abilities, again and again and again. With mages, you can atleast get 13-14 abilities. That is twice as much.

Sometimes I think that the people at Bioware are one of the smartest devs and the other times they just miss the obvious / basic things even if it right in front of their eyes.

I just... *sigh*...

Whatever, I will wait for the damn game... I just had to go and preorder...

If you feel very strongly almost every place I am aware of offers refunds for preorders. But I think DAI will still be great, even with these... decisions the team made.

Nobody said you only have 8 abilities in the spell book... nobody said you had to use the same 8 abilities all the time.

I imagine the encounter design will be as such that you will have to use different schools of magic for different scenarios.

Also it's 32 abilities across 4 characters or did everyone forget the game has companions?

8 hot buttons is and will remain the new standard for all RPG/MMOs because of consoles. Like it or lump it. I hate consoles but 3/4 or more of game console sales, specifically DA/ME sales support me having a badass game so more power to them and more difficulty and strategy for us all.

There's a surprising amount of people who only play as their character and just leave the companions on auto-pilot.

I don't understand it, but...
