What has The Warden been doing all these years up until DA: Inquisition

Hello!

First off, I am brand new to the Bioware forums. I actually just made this account to start this discussion, so hopefully it's worth discussing.

Disclaimer: I have only played the games and know only a minimum about the books/comics/ect.

To put myself in the Dragon Age mindset for the upcoming release of Inquisition I decided to do another play through of Origins and DA2. After finishing DA2 and hearing Leliana talk about the Warden being missing, some old, long forgotten gripes about the game resurfaced. What the heck has the Warden been doing and why doesn't she/he care? Now Leliana says they are missing, but DA2 is over the course of many years and so we don't really know when she/he has gone missing. I assume that even if The Warden isn't actually in Inquisition his/her character, being the Hero of Ferelden, will still have a huge impact to the game. Now with so many options on what could happen to The Warden I imagine Bioware will have some type of similar outline on what a living Warden would do after The Blight, or at least how they end up missing.

With this in mind I am really curious as to what The Warden could have been doing. Depending on how you play your character they can be a major busy body (most game protagonists are). So why wouldn't they, to at least some extent (especially depending on your origins), be involved with Kirkwall? Leliana says that Thedas is waiting to see what will happen in Kirkwall, so obviously the news is out there.

(I'm really sorry if this is all over the place)

Now for all the mage Wardens (who did not die or run off with Morrigan) wouldn't this news attract their attention? It's a huge deal for all mages everywhere! Especially if The Warden supported the Ferelden circle...rationally wouldn't this cause a lot of concern?

And if The Warden is of Dalish origin (and did not kick the bucket or go riding of into the creepy mirror with Morrigan), it is hard to believe that their clan has been trapped on Sundermount for years and the Dalish Warden heard no news of this and never went to help (or other Dalish clans for that matter...so maybe this is just poor writing?)

The biggest contender I have is if The Warden became Warden Commander, because even though matters like the Templars vs. Mages shouldn't concern them, surely one of their own starting a war would. ESPECIALLY if The Warden is friends with Anders and Justice, because as their commander isn't the Warden partially responsible for everything they do? And as their friend wouldn't they want to help? And they can find out about Anders from Nathaniel or other Grey Wardens.

So, their is a top secret reason the Grey Wardens are in Kirkwall, and yes, The Warden is almost certainly involved (if they aren't pushing daisies or raising babies) but it really keeps them so busy that they don't notice or care that their clan is stranded/or a bunch of mages and templars are killing each other/ or their friend is going bat crap crazy being possessed by Justice the "friendly" spirit? Even though, when The Warden was rushing to raise an army and defeat The Blight they had time to stop and tell someone their husband died or go and assassinate some people or all other meager side quests under the sun, but they are so completely busy with whatever they're doing for all these years that they never get involved with Kirkwall.

Long post short...what the heck are they doing!? And I hope I'm not the only one who is going to be severely perturbed if the answer just doesn't match up to your Warden's origins and character. I mean, they better be really friggin' busy. Ideas, theories, and opinions welcome. Did I miss some important details? Please keep it friendly!

I'm sure there's some made up equivalent of the drug in Thedas  :P . Maybe Lyrium?

The Warden has a nug farm, so he's been busy with that.

My Warden left the Grey Wardens because he was sick-to-death of their attitude and wanted to continue helping people, Blight or no Blight. He and Leliana's love sort of got hurt because she decided that she owed the Divine her fealty and has been doing missions for her left and right. I imagine he is neck-deep in the Mage-Templar war (Mage side) now.

Lyrium is not a drug, it is a holy substance taken in by Templars who in their duty know that is they who stand against the common people and magic.

But that's what I don't understand. My Warden too, was fed up with the Grey Wardens, but she was still a mage that was loyal to the Circle. Why didn't your Warden or my Warden get involved with Kirkwall? What were they doing that they weren't there?

Being Queen.

An important job without a doubt, but what about Wardens with other origins or who became Warden Commander?

Of the Fereldan Province of Orzammar.

When Alistair in a Lyrium withdrawl induced frenzy sold the Kingdom to King Bhelen for a literal mountain of Lyrium which he proceeded to leap into and has not been seen since.

In my case, she left the Wardens, her clan is dead, her waifu Leliana went off to serve the Divine, and most of her friends went off to do something else somewhere else. (as in, they heard a new protagonist was in town and wanted a cameo.)

It's probably a pretty bleak existence for my poor Mahariel at this point. I hope her dog is still alive at least.

I would definitely say Lyrium is a highly addictive drug. Even if it is also a "holy substance" that helps the Templars. *cough* and helps control them *cough*

Why would they be there? Kirkwall was a simmering powder keg but those aren't exactly uncommon in Thedas. It just so happens this one went off. Of course, I also think my Warden was blind to certain....changes in his friends.

On my end?

Dear Anders,

Hey old buddy! How you doing? I've been fighting Darkspawn Bloodmage Abominations up in Orlais (I hate these people, seriously). Nathan, Oghren, and Ser Pounce A Lot give their love. However, I've been hearing some disturbing rumors coming out of Kirkwall. Do you need any help? By the way, LOVE the new recruit you sent me. Bethany really brightens the place up.

Seriously, though, I've got your back man. We'll always be friends. Say hello to Justice for me.

-GW.

Three months later, he receives this response.

Dear Warden,

Everything's fine.

-Anders.

Yeah the romances also make it seem like The Warden should be up to something HUGE, because why else are Leliana and Zevran not with The Warden. I get that the characters have their own things to do, but if your Warden wasn't busy with something then why aren't they tagging along?

Haha. I'm laughing so hard right now!

But, without taking the joke to seriously. Wouldn't Bethany and Nathaniel tell your Warden that Anders seems a little unstable. Maybe The Warden feels like it's all the stress of loosing Ser Pounce-A-Lot?

It's like Return of the Jedi.

"She's not with you."
"We got separated."

Thedas is a big place! It doesn't help those two aren't exactly known for leaving forwarding addresses.

You left out Loghain, he'd be in Orlais too!

Then again he probably wouldn't give a fig for a random Warden who went off the rails and blew up a church.

I'm not quite sure as to why my Warden vanished. I suppose she felt that her duties were done after saving the city and saying goodbye to Morrigan.

I think she'd certainly want to know why the love of her life Leliana went off without her though.

Mmm My Warden and Loghain were bro's basically by the time of Awakening.

I'd like to think they ran into each other again some day.

I headcanon my Mage Warden being my Hawke under an alias.

Leliana showing up and gushing about her past love for the Warden while talking about how mages need to be oppressed was awkward for everyone.
