Ok, weird thing, I was playing a Neutral Shepard playthrough and somehow I managed to save Wrex without investing a point in Charm or Intimidate, or doing the Family Armor Quest. I just picked the Neutral responses to everything and he put down his gun and nothing happened. My journal says I convinced him. What the heck happened?

Edit: Ok, even weirder, I can't seem to even try to kill him. Is this because I left Garrus back on the Citadel?

I think it takes more into account than just his personal quest. there's a few instances where you have the option to be friendly with him or aggressive, if he's in your party. a couple of examples would be confronting Fist and killing the Rachni Queen

You left Garrus behind on the CItadel, and hadn't got Liara from Artemis Tau yet, I would wager. In that case you can't kill him because you wouldn't have enough party members to have a full party when completing Virmire (because you lose both Ashley and Kaidan at one point, and would have only the chicken footed girl left).

That makes sense. I didn't think about that. Kind of cool that I managed to stumble upon this loophole to saving Wrex.
