Hear me out, while i original got into RPG's by way of video games, it wasn't until i got into pen and paper games that i truly began to see all the possibilities for types of characters. One of the coolest ideas from back in those days was the idea that you could penalize your character in order to gain a extra feat or skill or ability. In this it was called Flaws, usually they were something major and weren't something that could be easily downplayed of gotten around. Now in terms of my topic, i was just looking through some videos on youtube and i came across a Avatar The Last Airbender video with Toph Bei Fong in it... and then it kind of struck me, What if we could pick major character Trait's for our inquisitor and it actually affected the story or became some what central to our personal interactions with our companions and npcs.. My first idea is of course based off of Toph who is blind, being a blind inquisitor... now that would be kind of interesting. i don't know all the details, but just the idea of being a blind inquisitor and seeing how you would interact with others and they you, and just game play in general would be so cool especially if somehow like Toph you developed a second sense, or extraordinary sensory ability that helps you compensate for your blindness, perhaps even getting it from the spirit within the fade, or if you are a mage using some kind of magical aura to see things around you in some not normal kind of vision... of if a rogue or warrior you used other senses, like hearing and smell to get around and even do combat.

I suppose you could always role play it in your mind like you were blind, but i doubt dialog will be so ambiguous that it never mentions you seeing something, heck your character sees the spirit that grants you your powers in the trailer.

Imagine if you were a deaf inquisitor, all those npcs call out to you, and you'd be running right past them until a companion tapped you on the shoulder and pointed something out.  Of course in true pnp fashion you'd like want something in return for these huge character penalties. I dont know what those would be, but im just loving the idea of having such disabilities and still being the hero.

If nothing else maybe a DLC character for a future unfinished project could include a Blind or otherwise disabled companion.

im not going to sit here and nitpick, like i said in the opening post the pnp system to which i had a background in had a system called character flaws, and being blind was one of them, you don't like it take it up with Wizards of the Coast or Paizo.

It would be nice to have more representation of disabled people in games like this.

What you're suggesting sounds a bit like the "traits" system from the Fallout series, which was great. "Traits" is also a much less judgmentally loaded term than "flaws", so it has that going for it as well. :)

There is only so much that developers can do with making a character act a certain way/saying something in a certain way, including those Disabilities. I could see perhaps something only cosmetic, such as a CC that lets you add a blind eye or something like that. But even then, npc's will not being able to point out that minor customization option.

I know in Skyrim you could have solid black eyes/ or solid white eyes, but no one ever points it out.

But I agree with Reidbynature, Disabilities are not Character flaws, but I know you weren't meaning to offend.

Hum no . It doesn't take stuff from Dunegon&Dragons , but the story is mind blowing . And it is your classic rpg , hero vs vilains and some choices that matter . NO romance though in the latest game he made (Jeff Vogel is the creator) he did insert a romance of a kind , 1st time . I recommand you check it out , cose the story is epic .

I think Wynne was the closest thing we had to a disabled character in the 2 previous games. The more i keep thinking about it, the more i really like the idea of such a character being extraordinary and joining the party and still functioning quite well despite their disability. I know it sounds corny but the idea of the blind swordsman, or mage seems so worthy of being included in the DA setting.

Well, now we also have Iron Bull, but yeah, more positive representation is always good.

It was a great way to add some flavor to your character, wasn't it? Really cool stuff. My New Vegas run was made so much more memorable because I was playing a drug addict who couldn't function without her glasses. Kind of like me, except for the drug addiction part. :D

Fair enough, but as a person who was born with their own disability, (minor as it is,) perhaps I'm less sensitive to sensitivity of what might go into a name or term to describe something. I'd like to point out if it wasn't clear, this idea isn't about harassing or polarizing disabled individuals in a negative way. If anything i brought it up for the opposite reason, in order to have or make more unique characters, or like i said if a future character were to be added giving such an individual such a "trait" would be a cool relating point for some, and a unique character to others all around.

Personally I wasn't mentioning physical disabilities because I'm offended by the term, but because it's incorrect.  Character flaws and physical attributes are not the same thing.  The topic of the title proposes something else than what you're actually arguing for.

I could take up your choice of topic title to WotC, but I'm not sure they'd reply at all to something like that. lol  :P

Maybe in 5 years this could be done in something as big or bigger than Inquisition. But the amount of data and dependent variables would be monumental.

Let's not forget ser Otto from Origins, he may have been a minor character but the guy was really cool, I still avoid doing his quest due to its ending  :(

I love being a Templar with Ser Otto, because you get new (Minor) dialogue options.

That being said, even though it doesn't happen in-game, I always have my characters with a special trait/flaw/disability.

Mainly (for my characters like my Dalish Warden and Casteless Dwarf) it's emotional trauma after

Spoiler

Though my Noble Dwarf Warden I have Physical things, like losing fingers or maybe sight in one of his eyes after having to fight his way through the deep roads.

I always thought that things like this could enhance the story. (But I can settle for writing my own up)
