Just a stab in the dark here. This is wild speculation at best and a hopeful request at worst. I was thinking on both the Garden of Eden and Nirvana this morning and it hit me... Could Arlathan be something similar? A paradise which frees the intrepid adventure from the limitations of Thedas once found. And once found one has no wish to return to Thedas. Those that do out of a sense of duty or sacrifice return to Thedas with strange powers like teleportation and intangibility. Powers that would brand the prodigal a veritable god. I thought that this would be an interesting spin on the Arlathan that so many elves and human search for even in the Dragon Age. It could even be a place to retire former protagonists and their loved ones to. Thoughts on this?

TL;DR: Basically a paradise-city that when located grants the finder ultimate enlightenment and powers associated.

I'm pretty sure it's just a very large dungeon waiting for victims adventurers.

But what if it's... more? It disappeared or sunk into the earth depending on the version of the story. What if the ancient elves in a last 'eff you' to the Ancient Imperium transported their city to a place past the Fade. It wouldn't be uncharacteristic if we take what we found out about Eluvians in TME and consider the possibilities.

Arlathan, a wretched hive of scum and villainy, with a cast system of poor people being poor and oppressed, and the elite using blood magic to "uthenera" their life.

Arlathan was just a city not some Disneyland up in the skies.

I'm think Arlathan's still in Thedas, just buried like the ruins the Eluvians led to in TME.  Like I said, its probably now a big dungeon full of valuable treasure and knowledge, and also great danger.

I actually think, Arlathan may be something more akin to Atlantis. Somewhat sunken in the Sea north of that Place called "Arlathan Forest" or something. It's just a Guess, I thought that would be a cool Thing.

Lol, you're exactly right. Arlathan is indeed the Atlantis of Thedas, except of sinking into the ocean, the ancient magisters used blood magic to sink it into the earth, in what is now known as Arlathan Forest.

In the games, it appears Arlathan is believed to be a mysterious sunken city, an equivalent to our Atlantide. I don't know if it's another realm (a special place in the Fade, or some orther world akin to the path you take when entering the Eluvians, but I have this theory on how to find it (other than you know, actuallly exploring the Arlathan Forest in Nothern Tevinter):

While replaying DA2, I noticed a codex entry regarding the Blackfox disappearance in Arlathan:

"The stories all agree that, at some point, the Black Fox disappeared: He and his fellow adventurers voyaged into the heart of the Arlathan Forest seeking the sunken city of the elves and never returned. Many more are the tales that expand on what ultimately happened to them in that forest and postulate on how they could someday be rescued."

And this is the codex of the ring Hawke can purchase in Act 2 from Bonny Lem's Wares:

"In Orlais, they say there are ten of these rings, one for each finger, and that the Black Fox was never without a single one. Some claim each represented a conquest; others: that they were reminders of secrets the he kept; still others: that they carried an inscription that, if all the rings were assembled as one, told the location of the Black Fox's stronghold.

Many nobles in Val Royeaux have claimed to own one or more of the rings, but nobody has ever found them all. Their secret, if there is one, is safe to this day."

So maybe if you reunite the ten rings you can find Arlathan, or the Black Fox stronghold, which could be Arlathan...Crazy theory ends here.

Or maybe where the Old God resided . Maybe there , is where they held their ultimate fight and why is the city destroyed . Though if the Old Gods had a residence......I feel like Leviathan all over again  <_<

I always thought Arlathan was a real city, now destroyed and as a result the veil is very thin. Think:Brecilian Forest.

Based on your description the Golden/Black city kinda fits. Although the place beyond the Fade makes more sense.
