If you've only played Mass Effect and none of the Dragon Age titles before, you may also have a skewed idea of how combat in DA actually works. In Mass Effect you only control Shepard, and your crew mostly runs around on their own. In Dragon Age, you have full control of all members of your party, meaning you can switch back and forth between each party member and command them to do specific things. In ME terms, it's as if you could take control of Garrus in a fight, to position him in a specific spot better for sniping in example, and let Shepard run around on his own AI. Then take charge of Javik, move him to a different spot, make him attack this specific enemy so he'll stop stealing your kills. Then go back to your Shepard and take it from there.
This changes the way you think the usefulness of your allies, because you can switch between them telling them exactly what to do, position and control them in the field to your Inquisitor's benefit. They don't just flail around getting in the way of your shots, they can be used to construct clever tactics that benefit your character's flow in a fight. It's a very different combat system, and it's worth taking a shot at before you completely dismiss it.
