hi guys. im brand new here and this might be a noobish question:

can i travel by myself without being a 4 men party?
or if i DO travel with 3 others, can i engage in a fight without them?

sometimes i like the challenge of fighting multiple enemies on my own but in every video i've seen it seems like the player must fight with 3 others alongside him\her. what if i wish to fight alone? or with just 1 companion with me? possible?

You should be able to travel on your own, but the difficulty will be a bit higher, naturally.

The game is balanced for a full party, but generally you have the option of picking less party members (Inquisitor is always present). As in previous titles, there are some plots which require certain characters to be present (eg. a follower's personal plot).

so is it like mass effect that you fill slot with party members and if you wish than you can leave slots empty?
(i havent played other DA games nor do i plan to)

p.s. - sorry about the other similar thread. i had an error creating it and thought it didnt register. mods - if you can merge them both that'd be awesome :P

Yep. Party picker lets you choose up to 3 followers to travel with your Inquisitor.

Is the Inquisitor still limited in the amount of abilities he can use (ie. 8) if travelling solo?

good to know.

i wonder if there are difficulty settings in this game. in either way i prefer fighting against manageable enemies on my own and not with help. i find that it reduces the fun of the combat when its 4 against a poor skeleton or something.

I think you'd be surprised at how well-matched the game is with the player plus three companions. Like you, I started playing one of the games (DA2) with no intention of using the other companions - but even on the casual mode, I got my ass handed to me fairly regularly. Dragon Age games really aren't like other RPGs in that the companions are there to be useful, not there to be distractions. And there's really never a case when it's four against a poor skeleton - more often it's four against a High Dragon.

Plus the companions are a lot of fun in and of themselves. I'd recommend experimenting and seeing what you think.

And If I may add to this . Compared to old game and I will only name Neverwinter Night . The system of companion have been greatly improved . They are much much better by a large margin compared to what we had in the old days . That and they add immersion to the game . It's like walking with bodyguard  ^_^

If you've only played Mass Effect and none of the Dragon Age titles before, you may also have a skewed idea of how combat in DA actually works. In Mass Effect you only control Shepard, and your crew mostly runs around on their own. In Dragon Age, you have full control of all members of your party, meaning you can switch back and forth between each party member and command them to do specific things. In ME terms, it's as if you could take control of Garrus in a fight, to position him in a specific spot better for sniping in example, and let Shepard run around on his own AI. Then take charge of Javik, move him to a different spot, make him attack this specific enemy so he'll stop stealing your kills. Then go back to your Shepard and take it from there.

This changes the way you think the usefulness of your allies, because you can switch between them telling them exactly what to do, position and control them in the field to your Inquisitor's benefit. They don't just flail around getting in the way of your shots, they can be used to construct clever tactics that benefit your character's flow in a fight. It's a very different combat system, and it's worth taking a shot at before you completely dismiss it.

BG2 was a pretty perfect balance in terms of functionality for companions, and a lot of the last several years seems to be about getting back to that state.

There are improvements, of course, but the DA system is much closer to BG2 than to NWN (where henchmen were largely combat-only) or Jade Empire (where companions were mostly about plot).

I never said it wasn't . I only named NWN 1 because from when I was playing that game , it felt hellish . BG1 and 2 were perfect . I agree .

If you referring to me saying 'old games' and think 'BG2' lol well , considering the BG community is still alive and making mods for it and peoples still worship it lol I wouldn't call that old . Nah I was thinking mostly about old old games , before the whole companion think ever came about . We didn't have any , and since then...... they kept improving and making them better .
