The friendzone does not exist. It is a concept made up by men who feel they deserve sex from a woman just by being nice to them. Everybody can lead everybody on etc but the concept of the friendzone is not right.

Also I don't feel entitled as some of the responses suggest, I just think this is an opportunity for Bioware to push for equality/more representation etc. I have no issue with Solas being race gated or straight. I just would like more options for once because it does get tiring being just thrown a bone and that's it. I'll still play and love this game regardless though.

there's also the definition of "friendzone" where someone wants a relationship and the other is only interested in being friends, it's not dependent on "I'm being nice to them, where's the sex?"

I wouldn't use that word because I just don't really speak in that way but I have male and female friends who have used this term before to describe a situation they were in. That is most certainly not what they meant, whether you like it or not that isn't always how that term is used no matter how much you keep saying it is.

It sounds like you're describing "Nice Guy Syndrome" rather than the friendzone.

I'd say "friendzone" is just a modern term for "unrequited romance"

I think it can be used either way depending on how seriously someone takes the term.  Some use it jokingly.  Spiteful people may use it seriously.

Some people use it that way, but it goes beyond this for some people. Friendzone is often used to refer to situations where the (usually) guy is unreasonably angry and entitled about the rejection.

Unrequited Romance

Person A: Do you wanna go out with me? I really like you.

Person B: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm just not that interested in you in that way. Can we be friends?

Person A: Awwww. (They are sad). Okay.

Alternatively: Um...sorry, but I think friendship would be kind of hard for me.

Bad Friendzone Conversation

Person A: Do you wanna go out with me? I really like you.

Person B: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm just not that interested in you in that way. Can we be friends?

Person A: Oh... (later, probably online or to friends) She's such a ******! Why couldn't she just be nice?! I've always been so nice to her! (It could be a guy, though).

Of course people experience unrequited love; in my original post, I mentioned that that's absolutely fair (when I mentioned disappointment was valid). Sometimes it comes across as weird, though, and as if people are saying Solas was obligated to be romantically involved or available. Anyway, I think this is starting to veer off topic, so I'll simply end with this:

It's fine if you're disappointed Solas won't be available to your character. No problem whatsoever. But (again, even though he's a created character) he exists as a person with preferences before and after your character comes into the picture.

Friendzone still perpetuates ideas of entitlement. ANYWAY how did this even come up in this thread?

If anyone wants to talk about it further feel free to message me and I'll explain further my opinion.

Except for the part where we said that its not about entitlement, but unrequited feelings

Of course we do. You know us straight people always sleeping with and falling in love with the very next straight person we meet.

People are strange. I don't understand getting so invested in something like that so it ruins any enjoyment you could possibly have. I remember when people were saying they didn't care what they had to be to romance Solas, they would do it if he was a love interest. Or just be good friends with him. The idea that it's spitting in the face of being inclusive to have a character be what the character is when there are actual options this time around seems like being angry for the sake of it. Upset is one thing - abusive and rude is completely another, folks. You're better than that, so leave the devs alone and find your joy again.

Gaider talked about this in his blog.  He said that he gets annoyed with people thinking a characater is "worthwhile" only if he/she is romanceable, and that if they're not, then the rest of getting to know a character comes in second.  Like, that's the only aspect of the character that's important.

He also found it annoying how people latch on the characters despite knowing only a small snippet of information about them and nothing else.  Once they play the game, they could find out that they really don't like that character at all because of their personality and/or actions.

I'm not sure how the male Sith Warrior, because that is the only one that exists, had some hallucination that he was in a relationship with Quinn, besides the bootlicking, but I'm glad you both came to your senses.
