I can imagine the conversation "We can't have all the Female companions as LI's or it will look like they are only in the game to be sex objects".  For this reason I never really expected Vivienne to be a romance option, but I lived in hope.

I actually made this point myself earlier in this thead (or in an another thead about this same issue, either one), and I still stand behind that making all female companions romance options for male Inquisitors would've been really sketchy...

...but, on the other hand, Sera (which I keep spelling Sura for some reason... too much Spartacus?) is a female!only LI, and the woman we can't romance is a woman of colour, which itself isn't completely problematic (see: the strong, sassy black woman who "needs no man" -trope). So its not clear-cut however you wanna slice it.

Well, unless the devs themselves tell exactly why they chose to use their extra time to make Cullen and Solas romancable, I'm going to assume that it was pure fanservice (in the best possible way): people asked for a Cullen romance, BW got more time to deliver on the stuff the people want, they noticed people wanted Cullen romance, and lo and behold, people got Cullen romance. Not sure if Solas has (or had back when these decisions were made) a fanbase influential / vocal / active enough to make that happen, but I know for certain that Cullen at least does (damn, they've been asking for it for two games - not a big Cullen-fan myself, but I'm not gonna begrudge them that, since they've been asking for it for so long). So maybe this is more of a case of "ask, and ye shall receive".

now before I get the usual "but I'm a guy/girl and..." I realise there are exceptions  to the rule

First off , I'm a guy

Congratulations on being male but like I said, I don't need to hear every single exception to the rule.

As for getting the shaft, being short changed, whatever, words from the devs themselves.

Speaking more generally, as I may have hinted towards... if there's a group that I'd be most willing to "short change" (or better stated, since only one group is really benefiting here, I'd be most unwilling to focus on) it'd be the straight male group because within pop culture (games, movies, etc) they are already the beneficiaries of so much content.  So I do not consider it the same level of "inequality" to have them get less options than a different group, as opposed to those other groups.

There isn't a chance in hell they would be willing to short change straight males (the majority of their fanbase) if they thought for a second it would cost them serious sales, the fact they can suggests the main target audience for romances isn't that market. But to tell you the truth, I can use my own knowledge and eyes to tell you that romances are massively more important to females.

How many guys read romance novels, watch romantic comedies, watch twilight or read 50 shades of ****, I can tell you, the numbers are miniscule. Like I say this isn't a slight on women, men and women just have different priorities for the most part and in general romance in all of its forms means more to women than it does men. If Bioware can appeal to their female audience more and still keep their core audience happy then fair play to them, they'll have done a decent job.

Actually my point really is that this would be a silly reason not to make Vivienne romancable, but it is symptomatic of pandering to a small group of people who are actively trying to find things they claim to be prejudiced.  There now seems to be a negative 'trope' for pretty much any character you can think of, Anita Sarkesian  even claimed that a strong woman who kicks butt was a sexist trope.

I actually don't really care that there are more male romances than female what annoys me is the female romance are so unappealing, I would be quite happy if I was enthusiastic about just one of them.  We have:

Cassandra - a woman in her forties with a fairly unfeminine look (not really most men's idea of there fantasy woman)
Sera - OK the hair is awful but my biggest worry is her character.  Lelianna / Tali did cute but grown up whereas Merrill just came across like a child and I fear that Sera is going to be more like Merrill (judging by the few clips we have seen)
Josephine - OK hard to tell as we have only seen one photo.  My understanding is she is a similar age to Cassandra and I fear the advisor's will be less developed characters (but maybe there is some hope here)

This is not to say they don't make good characters, I think Cassandra in particular looks to be a great character in the game its just that there not very appealing as romance options

As a straight male I looked on at how romances were treated for women in Mass Effect 3 and thought it was unfair for women.

*Spoilers*

Not only are there 7 heterosexual female choices for males (if Ashley is alive)

Compared to 3 heterosexual male choices for females (if Kaiden is alive) and one of those is Thane (who dies early on). If you save Ashley and don't count Thane (which I think is reasonable) literally the only hetro female romance you have is with a bird like creature that I can understand many women not being attracted to you... and that is ONLY if you romanced Garrus in ME2.

Add to that Jacob Taylor's getting another woman pregnant and not continuing things after ME2 and the romances seem to greatly disadvantage straight women. The

The lack of balance here isn't anywhere near bad and is still the same for hetro male characters as the previous 2 games.

My final thought on the Romances are that I am honestly dissapointed seriously a Straight Male and a Female Gay Inquisitor have only one option that can accompany them Cass & Sera w here the other orientations have 3 an 2 respectively and that sucks A**.
First no Dwarven LI Options and now this seriously B-Ware you are tearing me apart. :(

3 games and one major expansion, and still not a single dwarf romance option......I know Gaider thinks that's "icky", but come on. If I role a dwarf, it would be nice to be able to romance the same race I play as.

What does having them accompany them or not matter with romancing them?

I'm disappointed that Vive is not a li because we have yet to romance one black(African) female in a bw game.

Out of all of the companions I hardly even noticed Blackwall, now that he is straight female only romance, I feel like that should have went to Vivienne as a Bisexual romance. I'm a straight female and I'll be roleplaying as a Bisexual inquisitor, and I do care about LGBT representation in videogames, I honestly thought Viv was going to get it but I was very surprised at the news.

I also thought that Solas was going to be Bisexual non-gated romance, but that surprised me too. Cullen, not so much.
