I am worried about the amount of ACTUAL abilities in the game

In dao there were a fair number of abilities to choose from like around the 20's range. In da2 there were also a fair number of abilities but I often got tired of seeing the same mage spells over and over.

I can not comprehend how in DAI I will be fine with seeing 8 abilities at a time, the animations will get old, it limits tactical options, etc.

At this point I am worrying about the actual number of abilities in the game. The amount of abilities is so low that 8 abilities is apparently a majority for each class. What happened? Were they not able to animate more abilities in the engine or something?

These kinds of news makes me very skeptical, its like they are trying to hide the bad stuff again just like before DA2 launch and ME3 launch.

You can have a lot of abilities... you can only hotkey 8 of them on console (presumably more on keyboards). You can still select the others with the radial menu and I am guessing that sustained and passive skills will also be animated (like in DA2)

Just because you can only put eight of your abilities on the hotbar doesn't mean that there are only eight main abilities per class. Assuming that you're not in combat, you can always pop different abilities on to your hotbar to keep from dying of what I'm sure will be the stultifying boredom of seeing the same animations over and over again. *rolleyes*

I am not to worried given it wouldn't be the first game with  more skills then hot keys for them.

Just looking at Mage, every school or "book" seems to have atleast 5 active abilities, with specializations having 3 each(this may differ based on the specialization). So let's say you fill out 2 schools and one specialization, you got atleast 13 active abilities(5 + 5 + 3) to choose from. After that, you will have to choose 8 from the 13 and swap them around between each combat. Which means for every combat situation atleast 5 active talents are locked from being accessed, which f*cking sucks. Thanks Bioware.

Anyway, what I'm saying is, I don't think you have to worry about the total number, just the nuisance of having to use only 8 of them at any given time.

I think if they planned all their ability trees with the 8 abilities at a time in mind (which I hope they did, or else they just fail at game design), then it should all work out fine. I'm expecting a fair amount of ability unlocks will actually be passives or upgrades.

But if like, the mage skill trees are like they were in Origins - with basically no passives and all new abilities - it will suck. But then I just expect that the later spells you unlock will be so much more powerful than the earlier ones, that you won't want to use the earlier ones any more? or that we'll get in the habit of swapping out our abilities based on what we're going - I figure when I'm exploring, I'll equip a lot of AoE spells on my mages, but when it's getting close to a boss fight, I'll switch to some more single-target type spells.

/thread.

Seriously. Laidlaw said the game is going to have different priorities for combat. Why waste 2+ years of development and then use exactly the same system as DA2 but just add a random limit?

exactly the same system as DA2

It kind of is, though. About 10 points per tree, about 5 abilities "hotbarrable" per tree, about the same amount of AP character gets from creation to level cap - enough to max 3 trees. So a character gets to unlock about the same number of abilities, but can use only 8 of them at a time.

Just because it's in the diamond shape that abilities are, doesn't mean it's not just an upgrade of a previous ability....

Actually the limit is still 8 on PC too. They've said that we won't be able to select others from the radial menu, and will only be able to switch abilities outside of combat.

Wait, so you'll just use the same four people in your party all the time, never swapping anyone out or levelling them up differently to fill in different roles?  Cause that's the only way you'll only see 8ish abilities in the whole game.  Even then, you'd have to play a mage and only take Dorian, Vivienne and Solas with you wherever you went and have them all purchase the same abilities....

The more I analyse this situation, the more it sounds like a fun and exciting challenge actually.  Maybe on my fourth playthrough I'll try and complete the game on Nightmare with only eight abilities in the whole party.  :P

The fact that I can't use all my abilities is a huge let-down. My mage will just "forget" spells before combat.

Ugh. Not liking the sound of that. Definitely going to avoid playing a mage like the plague.

Play on Casual, the way the game was intended to be played.

There are no sustained abilities anymore. The fighter tree I saw had 4 active abilities.

No, that's eight abilities per character.

No. Only potions and bombs can be accessed from the radial menu.

No. If you have some added to Tactics, they won't work either, if not part of the 8 mapped abilities. The game will just skip unmapped abilities from your set Tactics, as well.

Why are the abilities so restricted anyway?I get tired of using the same spell/talent over and over again so I'd like to know why the abilities are limited to 8 only.

You could use some of your companions' abilities.

I'm going to guess:
1) Console parity
2) Ease of testing
