Long and late post:
Seeing this news was pretty disappointing. It'd be nice if I was angry, but I'm not: just disappointed. It's a significantly worse emotion to have about something that you think is important. First off, and I've said this before: I don't think that "fairness" should be the end-all-be-all goal of Bioware when they design romances. I don't think a writer should have to write a romance for a character if they didn't think it relevant, and that seems to be what happened with Vivienne. It makes sense to me that some characters won't be romances, and this may create gender imbalances in who the romances are.
At the same time, I don't ever really buy the argument that, especially in Thedas, that changing a character's sexuality really changes much about that character. Of course for some characters some things are important: Leliana's relationship with Marjolaine makes it necessary that she isn't straight, but it's just as easy to write her as bisexual as it is to write her as a lesbian. With this in mind, I wasn't necessarily expecting equal options among all sexualities, but I was kinda expecting that the romance options would be more or less equal between gay and straight characters as a whole.
This expectation arose largely from the rhetoric that Bioware's been throwing at us since day one of Inquisition. That rhetoric is all about equality and the importance of representation and all that: so I was pretty optimistic coming into the reveals. So, when expectations are set high it always hurts more when they're dashed. I know Bioware wasn't dishonest with me, but it feels like it a little bit. Maybe I should take away a different lesson from this all: but the lesson I'm taking away is that gay and lesbian players make up the smallest portion of Bioware's playerbase. We shouldn't ever expect our options to actually be equal to those the straight players are presented with. (And it's especially disappointing to realize that they were totally fine with some gay male races only having one romance option back when Bull was gated) Which I guess makes sense, sorta. I'm more upset with their marketing than anything: I wish they were more upfront about these realities in the future.
Oh well, that's all the whining I'm gonna do. Just figured it was worth getting out now.
