I hope Vivienne's reason doesn't relate to rape or something traumatic like that.

I remember seeing a tweet from Patrick Weekes saying you would be locked out of romance dialog after flirting to a certain point with one person, but I honestly don't think I could find the quote now, because it's been months. So, I guess it's kind of on the hearsay level as to how it works right now.

You stated in the panel that you can't have two romances but can you be in a romance and still flirt with the non companion?

Patrick Weekes ‏@PatrickWeekes
Once you have started a romance, most flirts with everyone else get locked off. A few friendly ones might stick around, though.

More likely she is or will be in a relationship of her own. Like Aveline and Donnic.

I know this is an older post, but I wanted to jump into the Zevran discussion, since he's one of my favorite LIs of all time

I remember the first time I got that reply from him with my male Surana.  Poor kid was so crushed that I actually reloaded and went through the conversation again, just avoiding that dialog chain altogether.  Did that with all my remaining male PCs that romanced Zev, too - denial and self-delusion are helpful at times  ;) .  I know other people might not be as crazy as me, but since Zev never officially said that to my m!Wardens, the comment never existed in their worlds  ^_^

I'm really, really excited for the Dorian romance! Since he's written by DG, I know it will be awesome (Zevran and Fenris both received more than their fair share of my Hawkes and Wardens  :D ) -- November can't get here fast enough!

Haha. That's cute. I explore all the dialog options, so I got there and was a bit put off, but stayed the course. lol

I did really like Zevran, though. I liked his romance and I liked him a lot as an individual. I just definitely could have done without that bit. It's great that they're adding homosexual characters for diversity and representation sake, but I do hope they try to improve their representation of bisexuals, because it's been a bit spotty in multiple ways.

I'd love to see a knight in shining armor type bisexual male that prefers men. It would cover a lot of ground that they've missed in one move.  :P

I'd be more inclined to guess it's because she's planning to stab us in the back.

Or maybe she's attached.  Or thinks you're uncultured slob with the dress sense of a drunk pig

I wouldn't be surprised if Viv isn't interested in the Inquisitor because she's afraid their drabness would clash with her fabulous.

I note from the Skyhold article http://forum.bioware...5#entry17267544

That the companions have their favourite places to hang out.

If you are romancing Sera you'll find her in the bar  :)

Zevran was the first time I got to play m/m romance in a game, so he'll always be special to me.  I thought it was great to dig under his facade and find the depth under the suave surface, whether as an LI or just as a friend. Nice to find someone else who appreciated him!

I agree about the DA representation of bisexuals (in certain cases) needing to be improved.  I'm hopeful that IB will not disappoint, despite the "hyper sexuality" that's surrounding his character depiction at this point.  I trust the BW writing team enough to give them the benefit of the doubt that there will be a lot of depth to him aside from that (kinda like Zev).  Not that it's impossible I'll be wrong (it happens... allot), but fingers crossed and all that.

For the last bit... I was kinda hoping for Blackwall to fill that spot in this game. Yeah, I'm delusional LOL -- maybe they'll hear us and provide one in DA4!  :)

Maybe Vivienne just has her eyes on someone else, or doesn't want to put someone she cares about at risk by dragging them into the game with her.

I totally get it, Zev was my first experience with a m/m romance in a game, also. In media, generally, really. I'd seen a few gay side characters in things, but never a m/m romance heavily featured. So, it's definitely important to me. I hope we'll get to see him again in future games. It's unfortunate that he's gotten less feature in the expanded series than the other Origins LIs. (Morrigan, Alistair, Leliana) Someone mentioned a while back that he could be leading the crows now and that gives me some hope that we could see him again if they go to Antiva in the next couple sequels.

I thought at first that Cullen might be bisexual. I know he wasn't interested in male warden, but after Kaidan and Anders, I thought they might consider it worth expanding. Then Blackwall, too, was.. I admit a big let down. A while back Allan Schumacher made a romance trope thread in the feedback forum and many people mentioned that characters like this are always straight, so hopefully they're aware of the disappointment now and we'll see a change next time. I really hope that will be the case.

I don't know what to think about Vivienne. She might already have a partner that we don't know about, or one she was separated from, like the situation with Varric. She might have a child that was taken away, because she's a mage? I don't know if that's a reason she couldn't be a romance, though. She might betray us, that's a popular theory. I like to put the sexual abuse theory at the bottom of the pile, because it has so many unfortunate implications. If it is true, though, I have to say, another "healing D" plot certainly wouldn't have improved that choice, so... there's that.

Maybe she just has no interest in a relationship. Maybe she has goals she wants to pursue, ladders to climb, power to grasp, or she's ace. There are plenty of reasons to eschew romance.

She could have still been a romance if she was asexual. That would have made many people very happy.

"Rape survivors need the healing D" and "Rape survivors are so broken they no longer want love or sex" are both horrible.

It's one of those situations where there aren't a lot of easy ways to handle the subject until you're willing to spend time on it. And then it can seem to dominate the character.

Which is why not putting sexual assault in a story in the first place is often an excellent choice.

Maybe Bioware just thought a romance wasn't best for her character, like Varric

I agree, definitely. Either way is difficult to do in a way that works. I think the problem with the way Bioware has handled this in the past (especial with Jack, for example) is that it's something you basically have to romance them for them to deal with. I believe it's also basically true with Fenris. The only way to help them, really, is to romance them. And even then, the relationships are questionably healthy at times. If there was an equivalent friendship path to help them deal, I think it would be more effective than just having them "too broken" for romance or having "the right kind of sex" be the only thing that can fix them.

I shy away from saying it should never be something they try, because a positive portrayal could be something good for actual abuse survivors, but the problem is nailing it down in a way that doesn't just do more damage. Bioware hasn't done a very good job approaching it, thus far, so I do cringe a little at the possibility.

Well, Bioware didn't just think romance wasn't the best for Varric. They said it was because he had someone else, ie Bianca. But people are guessing there's a reason specifically because Allan said there was a reason that made sense to him in the sticky romance thread.

Totally agreed about Zevran not getting as much "play" in the series so far as the other Origins LIs.  Even his optional side-quest in DA2 was bugged all to heck so that the dialog for him didn't reflect his romanced status from DAO correctly -- I was pretty floored when Zevran (romanced DAO save game) got suggestive with my m!Hawke on my first DA2 play-through... although Fenris told him to back-off pretty quickly, which was 31 flavors of awesome.  That was one of the major disappointments related to no mod tools for DA2, for me - the modders take time to fix those kind of immersion-breaking quest/dialog bugs, when the dev team doesn't.  I love the idea of seeing Zevranagain in future installments, as leader of the Crows or anything else for that matter -- I'll be holding a torch for that!  :D

Cullen I hadn't really thought about much.  I was kind of surprised he was an LI at all (turns out that he almost wasn't, based on ML's post).  I could easily see him being Bi all things considered, but I felt the same way about Alistair, so I think my "game-gaydar" probably needs tuning  ;)

I didn't know about the tropes thread (I've been away from the forums for quite a while) -- thanks for the info!  Hopefully they take that into account and in DA4 we get a Knight in Shining Armor to call our very own  -- For this game, I'm more than happy to have Dorian and IB.  I'm guessing at least one of my m!quizzys will stare longingly at Blackwell for a while, but he'll get over it eventually  :P
