From what I understood (keeping in mind I am not a Dev, nor do I have any kind of top secret information) after you have locked yourself into a relationship with a LI you will become locked out of flirt options with other LIs.

 

I think it was Patrick who described it at GaymerX as, you trigger events with each LI and once you trigger the "but do you like like me" event and respond positively to it then that's when things become locked in with that person. Presumably to prevent you from confusing the game by 'locking in' more than one. You will still have access to some 'friendly flirt' options with other characters. Pretty sure there was a tweet awhile ago about some jealousy dialogue, so it exists in some capacity.

That wasn't a problem in the previous games. This means I can no longer have a party full of LI fighting over me. This is terrible news.

Ah, so its more like ME 3 where their were specific scenes that locked you into a romance and that determine who you had the "sexy time" scene with. But you could still start multiple romances and they might even bicker before that "lock in" point.

That's what it sounded like to me, yes. 

 

But you know, I could have misinterpreted horribly. There might only be one romance cutscene and two lines of dialogue for each companion in the whole game.

As it turns out Vivienne will just turn out to be the ultimate Badass, the final boss, difficult to romance indeed.

Life is full of regrets and I really doubt we will get enough support to turn Vivienne into a LI in future DLC or DAI2

It may be that one romance will have to be terminated before any other can be initiated.  While it is true that a player might regret choosing a LI and want to try another instead, and it is fun to play the love 'em and leave 'em type once in a while, the remaining potential LIs might have their own opinions about casual flings and might want more comittment.  

 

For instance, I'm not too thrilled with the idea of any of the followers hopping into bed with the inquisitor without a care in the world.  Makes you feel kind of special, doesn't it?  But what the devs have said is that in-game choices might close off the possibility of romancing some companions, even those that would otherwise have been available.  Making the decision to romance someone is an in-game choice as well.  We're told there's plenty of time to get to know the followers, so it's not as if you've got to decide 20 minutes after you meet everyone.

At least not at the same, maybe never.

Threesomes are much harder to script and code.

Luckily, the only jealous bickering I ever got came from when Anders would snipe at my love interest for that playthrough.

I was pretty adamant about not sending the wrong signals to the rest of my romanceable companions, even it if meant an approval loss.  I really didn't want to screw up my Warden's or Hawke's relationships, so the idea of locking my character into a relationship is a relief.  Now my inquisitors don't have to be any more awkward than they already are.
