So, moving on from the topic of representation amongst genders and sexualities for a bit-- What do you guys hope from the romance arcs this time? Not just whether you CAN romance them but what sort of things do you hope to see in the romances and what do you hope people will avoid?
A short list of mine:
1. Strong Women Being Made Vulnerable as a Sign of Romance: It worked for Morrigan because, really, she would have been more emotionally healthy being raised by wolves but that wasn't in the slightest bit romantic. Isabella's whole deal was troubling as well. I'd really just like a strong female romance who doesn't have this huge secret dark side struggling to get out.
2. Romances which are between two serious people: I love Leliana, really, but my Warden kept trying to steer the conversation to subjects about the Maker and her Assassin days because, really, those were the nice ones. I ultimately went with her over Morrigan but it was a hard choice because Morrigan was an overall much more serious and interesting person, I think. At least until we got a full sense of Leliana's character.
Merril, I just couldn't get into, because it was like dating the Malkavian from Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines and just too cutsey.
3. The Ability to Disagree without breaking the Friendship/Romance: This may be asking a bit much from Bioware but part of what I liked about Rivalry Romances were the fact that you could have strong ties between two people despite the fact you didn't believe in the same things. I didn't much care for how Aveline would say things like, "We're not really friends." when I'm going out of my way to help her with her romantic past but I liked poor Fenris and my Hawke's vitrol filled brotherhood.
4. Someone who is Pro-Mage: Cullen is an ex-Templar, Cassandra is an Ex-Templar, and Vivienne is anti-Mage/Templar war. I hope one of these three is Pro-Mage (even if I'd never romance Vivienne) because it's going to be awfully awkward in Skyward Keep if I'm constantly pushing my Extremist Mage Agenda and no one is agreeing.
