I think the frustration that people are reading from gay men is because, up until Solas was announced as straight, it seemed likely that we would be getting either the same amount of options as everyone else or possibly even one option more than some demographics. Now, with that one announcement, it's looking increasingly likely that we will actually be getting the least amount of options again. Just like that. And I think it still stings a bit.
No one is saying that Bioware doesn't do more than other developers, because that suggestion would be ludicrous. No one is even suggesting that Bioware has done a "bad" job with gay representation. It's just that it hasn't been as "good" as some people make it out to be. Remember that Bioware has put out 10 games with romances. In 6 of those games, there weren't m/m options. We had zero representation. In two out of the other four games, we had only a single "choice", which was tied for least amount of choices with lesbian players. In the remaining two games, we were tied for least amount of choices in both of them (with everyone but straight women in DA 2 and with everyone but straight men in ME 3).
It's certainly been getting better, but it's still not great. I think a lot of gay men were really thrilled that everyone would have the same amount of choices (3 each), including us. Instead, we've got a straight Solas and likely a bisexual Vivienne coming, which means that everyone will get 3 choices.......except for us. I think that this is where the frustration lies.
Perhaps we are wrong and Blackwall is the last LI. But that's looking less and less likely. I think people are just venting a bit right now because it's still a little raw. We'll get over it once we accept it and get into the game and see how amazing Dorian and Iron Bull are, I'm sure. But it doesn't take away the fact that this might very well be the 11th game in a row from Bioware that we get the least amount of options (or tied for the least amount of options).
