Ace in your romance thread, wanting romance without sweaty snugglebunnies just to throw everything off.

Hahah, I doubt I'm the only one here though. I'm just high on roughly all the coffee. And I would love not to have the romance culminate in traditional Bioware nookie, but I'm not terribly perturbed about that.

I started the wait terribly excited about Blackwall, Iron Bull, and Varric. I told myself I'd be happy if I could have one burly fuzzy guy. Then Iron Bull was announced and I immediately jumped into the Varric wheelhouse because I am a greedy person. Now without Varric, I'm jumping on the Blackwall ship. It's nice that I have Bull as a fallback plan, though... Well, he's not the most ace friendly love interest from what we know.  :D

Heh. S'ALL GOOD THOUGH.

You should head to the Blackwall thread if you get a chance. We're a good bunch if I may so so.  :P

Well, you may be in luck. :)
I'm fairly certain it was stated that some romances will allow the player the option of turning down sex, without the romance coming to an end because of that.

I'm not a real frequent poster. I more reads the threads, posts mysterious likes, and vanishes into the mist, like a forum Bigfoot.

Mostly because I feel my contributions are limited to "Boy howdy, he sure seems legit. I am looking forward to November."

Though I anticipate getting more chatty as we know more.

Hmmmm... Hahah, just wait. It'll be Solas. And you're going to have to pull my teeth out before you get me to play an elf in a game where I CAN BE A DWARF.

(That was a joke.)

(Probably.)

They did say this, although I'm not sure who or how many it includes. But hopefully it will be one you're interested in!

Multiple facets of equality should be approached with equal respect and measure so that all sections of a given demographic have something for their interests, and that goes for all demographics, not just LGB players.

I don't see anyone arguing that there has to be exactly the same number of black LI's and white LI's though, or the same number of gay and bisexual companions as straight ones.

Giving minority characters equal scope and depth, and including several of them is very important, but I will never see why volume must be equal, with either LI's or any other aspect.

(With perhaps the sole exception of gender, since with an almost exact 50/50 split in real life and something approaching that in the playerbase there really should be around equal numbers in games as well. But that's an entirely different tangent...)

I absolutely support them giving an equal number (or more) non-white LIs. If that's a movement we're starting, I'm totally behind it. I'm very happy that Bioware included a few racial minority characters, but it definitely needs improvement and it needs representation among other races. It's sad that all non-human races are just assumed white.

Bisexual and gay characters shouldn't be combined if we're using them this way. The thing most people like about bisexual options is that it offers more player option, but bisexuals and gays aren't really the same, which is what Bioware stated when they decided against the all bi approach. The reason I think it's alright to balance out more bisexual characters as LIs with non-LIs of other sexualities is that I don't think representation of specific sexualities as LIs is what's important. The issue is giving the player more options for romances that fit their own sexual preference. Character representation, in itself, can be handled separately, if it isn't limiting player options to the romance feature. A gay non-LI (or straight) is just as effective at character representation, but it isn't as effective at balancing player choice for the romance option.

Like real life we don't always get the romances we would have liked. Just the way it goes. On the other hand the friendships in the series always had more weight to them for me, felt more genuine.

I've discussed ad nausum my issue with focusing on the relative number of romances, but there is one more thing I think I should point out.  By obsessing about who get's how many romances, you're reducing characters like Dorian, Cassandra, Sera, Iron Bull and others into statistics.  That doesn't strike me as fair.

This is actually something I strongly agree with, and have been saying since before we knew there would be set sexaulities. It's why I've always favored them over the all-bisexual approach, which I was never fond of.

Then what should we focus on? I've already talked about how the quality of our romances tends to be lower. Do you really believe that Cassandra, Cullen and Solas will be lesser characters with lesser personalities, plot relevance, romance arcs, etc? If they're better, we lose on two fronts. If they're the same, we lose on one. The chances of them being inferior are very low and it's not what Bioware's past games have represented. If quality had generally made up for our lack of options, I might understand this, but it definitely never has and there's no evidence to suggest it will.

There's a chance that Cassandra and Cullen will be terrible characters in-game with underdeveloped plots overall, but I think going in expecting that to happen isn't exactly likely to pan out.

It'll be interesting to hear or see something like that as long as it's not another dead wife.

Or they could flip that round and have Blackwall with a *living* wife/husband and family, but he doesn't get to see them very often on account of his being a Grey Warden, and later his joining the Inquisition.

*hastily glances at Blackwall fans*
Err, or, you know, he could just have the hots for the Inquisitor...

Actually, we could adopt the multiplayer approach, if you get a romance you don't want, you can trade it in for romance crafting components to allow you to make the romance you do want, or you could buy an additional crafted romances through micro transactions...  :D

I am really just kidding !!!

That's a fair point.
I think the issue is that statistics are the only appropriate way to address the topic, since the quality of the romances is subjective, but the quantity of the romances isn't.

I do have to say that this is why I hope Vivi is the final romance option, aside from her interesting background information and the fact that she is very beautiful. We've never had a *black* love interest before. People will reference Isabela, Cassandra, and Dorian - but they aren't actually black. Like black-black. Like Vivienne-black. And she is beautiful. And I would love for her to be the final love interest.

I believe David Gaider put his best effort into writing Dorian.  I also think he did the same for Cassandra.  I think Bioware has made a real effort to make the best possible romances, regardless of their orientation.  I hope that I'm proven right when the game comes out.

I agree that Vivienne is beautiful and should be a love interest. She reminds me of my girlfriend, who is much more beautiful though  :)

Some people thought Cassandra was whitewashed from DAII.......I honestly don't see it myself unless someone wants to post picture evidence.  Weird lighting again?

The problem with the focus on statistics is that it treats romances as a zero-sum game, which is not my view.  Now I'm not saying people shouldn't feel upset or disappointed  about the current spread of romances, but I do think people need to reserve judgment about DAI's romances until they play the game.  (Or watch the romance arcs on YouTube)

That is really odd. Every bit of concept art and every in-game screenshot shows that she is white.

I imagine they mean that there are a fair number of people who lump everyone who isn't white into a single group.

Hasn't there been a fair amount of discussion that suggests that she's meant to be olive-skinned (or Mediterranean-looking in real life terms)?

Wut.

I don't see it. I don't even see how anyone could reach that conclusion unless their monitor/tv was all sorts of screwed up.
