How come Skyrim had a marriage option but Dragon Age did not? (not counting origins)

you must play on console

If what you're implying is that mods make the marriage system better, they don't. You can mod sex animations into your Skyrim all you want, your spouse is still a braindead inflatable doll pacing around the house waiting to give you some homecooked meal the next time you bother dropping by.

The reason why long term decisions like marriage existed in Fable and Skyrim is because those are empty worlds where the 'story' of the game itself is just another optional side-quest that held no immediacy or imminent peril. It is also because the characters in those games are not true characters---they are mobile environmental objects with with negligible dialog, a three adjective personality, and no ambition or story of their own.

In Dragon Age, the notion of contemplating a long term commitment is ridiculous in a world that is "tearing itself apart". Nor is there reason to assume any of the other characters are going to give up their long term ambitions if you all do survive the endgame.

So its okay for Aveline, FEMHawke and Human nobles to get married, even though there was a blight, qunari invasion, and mage-templar war. It's safe to asume that people can get married whatever the crises.

A lot of people get married in times of strife and war, some are even inspired by that threat of death to acquire that closeness with another lest the worse happen.  The world at war is a terrible excuse I'm tired of hearing.  That being said I'm only for marriage if it fits the character and am similar against avoiding marriage if marriage fits the character.

I fully support the addition of marriage as part of a romance path.

I'm not sure that we should be looking towards the "romances" in Skyrim as a model for anything.

I see 2 issues with this . 1) Skyrim as an exemple is bad m'kay ? and the fact they limited the whole thing. Only 1 argonian and no Khajiit at all . Mostly humans looking candidats . 2) If you insert marriage , you will by default have to include gay in it and not limited like for exemple : Elf can't marry /or must have a ceremony done by a keeper and since we can't , here have your chantry wedding . = equal a giant mess .

I don't think it will be a good idea . These rpg games unlike Skyrim weren't build around that kind of thing. And considering just how many thing can go wrong......I would say , put more energy in giving us a great Epilogue that let us know how our favorite couple is doing , then a wedding .

Marriage in Thedas isn't "closeness with another" though.  It's a contract for offspring and inheritance.  Actually liking your spouse is pretty much optional.

It could be a thing in the game, but I don't think they should necessarily let you marry your LI.  They could have various NPC's offer various political alliances, though.

Aveline did not get married for political reasons either time and loved both her husbands, nor was there any sign of it being in any way about offspring.  There have been examples of both marriage of politics and love in Thedas, don't cherry pick examples and try and apply it to all of the world.

Is like saying that political marriages still existing today nullifies all marriages of love and personal commitment merely by existing.

Marriage in Skyrim is truly remarkable.

Somehow, it manages to make dry and stale NPCs even more boring.

Absolutely.  Is more common than you think when times are bad.

Is more a hope for the future, that there is a future beyond the horror surrounding you.  Is about making a commitment to the person you love, so that if you lose them, or they lose you tomorrow, you both know that you did not die alone.  It's about hope, it's about creating a bright light and a commitment to be there with each other through thick and thin in a world filled with horror and chaos.

It's about creating a love and purpose with someone you really care about, to give each other love, hope and something worth fighting for, a reason to live and persevere.

If the PC has time to chat about all of his companions' life stories and get romantically involved with them, then they have time to get married. It might be interesting if they had one companion who insisted on marriage before the sex scene reward at the end of romance dialogues.

I would love to have a 'No Sex until marriage' character as a love interest.

OP you forget Fable has a marriage system.

What things do you imagine you will have from a marriage system? What will this system add to the game? Will it be like when the companions propose to you in SWTOR where it adds nothing? No additional dialogue or anything, just a couple of letters with gifts attached to them, yay.

But Skyrim and Fable are examples of why marriages don't work in videogames...

Their implementation is shallow and often cringe-worthy.

Marriage was pretty bad in Skyrim.

Serana's friendzone no-mance was much better. :S

I'd be all for marriage being an option as something discussed in dialogue and completed post-game, off-camera in an ending slide.  As in, you can discuss it and decide whether or not to marry, but then resources are not sunk into having a wedding scene play out--particularly during the heat of the plot's actions.

Not that I'd be opposed to a wedding scene, or to a couple of characters acting as if married.  Actually I'd like that, but I'm not sure it could be justified to have those kinds of scenes in-game, when there are so many other areas that need the resources, animation, writing, etc. devoted to them.  Guess what I'm saying is if the rest of the plot, dialogue, etc. suffer, then it's a huge no from me--but otherwise, of course, I like the idea.
