Destiny is too different, there is almost no common thing between those two games. They both take place in space and that's it.

The main difference is that while ME feels like Fantasy in space (mass effect fileds like magic - does every wonder), destiny feels like it is the future.

14 hours now In to destiny....
Fun.....but a massive en let down. (Other than graphics and game play control)

HecK..SWTOR is better from an Mmo stand point...and harder....(destiny is my first fps)
There's just no Epicness in Destiny....With no story and such thin exposition..... why sound I gaf about this world or doing any of the missions?

I'm currently about ten hours into Destiny, can't help thinking I wish I was playing ME and there was a map/planet the size of the moon map that you got to appreciate and explore. I'm sure there will be a ton of places like that in next ME.  :)

ME multiplayer is a bit repetitive, if they had larger maps I could be tempted to play it and if they had 'raid' style missions. One thing I hope they do is keep it all completely separate from single player.

I don't even know why are you doing this vs.

Mass Effect has a great universe, great lore, great characters etc, Destiny is just an average game with a lot of cliche, it seems it was written by a 15 years old kid with all this stupid stuff "The Darkness", "The Guardian", "The Fallen", "The Light" etc.

There is no comparison, ME is just so much better on every point.

Destiny will make Mass Effect irrelevant in same way Call of Duty makes Battlefield irrelevant.

As in, it won't.

It will just be more popular.

I rented Destiny and boy it is terrible. Don't play this game if you have any expectations or discerning taste in science fiction. This game is an absolute snorefest and has no interest whatsoever in telling a story or developing characters. This game is exclusively for shooting guns and has no regard for science fiction or lore. Please, don't even compare it to Mass Effect, as it will only further embarrass Destiny.

Bungie was certainly lacking for ambition when it came to the actual "storytelling" element in the game. I will say though, as a shooter, it's a pretty addictive one. When I learned of it being what is essentially an MMO (Bungie can deny as much as it wants; that's what it is) I abandoned any real hopes in getting an immersive tale along with my adventures shooting at things.

I don't know what to say about it having no regard for science fiction or lore, because it's kind of light on both of these things anyway. It's more like a fantasy, much in the same way Star Wars is, minus any particularly strong narrative or backstory. It's too bad Bungie couldn't think of better names for things though. Darkness? Hive? Fallen (why are they "fallen" anyway? Fallen from what?) Come on.

As much as Mass Effect tended to dump on its own setting by having a lot of lore-breaking shenanigans, it at least had a thorough history and backstory for so many things that kept the setting very interesting.

it has interesting lore if you look at the Grimoire, too bad its on Bungie.net.

also, lol @Mass Effect being interested in Sci-fi or keeping its lore

From reading the posts, it looks like I might wait till the price drops dramatically before getting this game.

I'm watching playthrough on YouTube. It is quite bland. I like combat, character gear and upgrades selection but there is little else to find there. Large beautiful areas with nothing in them to reward exploration, no sense of discovery, Earth not visible from the moon... :)

Personally, I would not get it at all

It's as always with these kinda things: those that don't like it, get on the forums and cry like they just had their balls cut off. Those who enjoy it are playing the game.

edit: not saying it's a good game btw, I don't have it, but basing your opinion on forum posts this early after release is not the way to go.

Apples and oranges. Saying Destiny would make ME feel irrelevant is like saying a Sonic the Hedgehog game would make a Mario game feel irrelevant. Similar genre, completely different games. Destiny is at it's core still a FPS, with MMO elements to it. Mass Effect has always felt like an RPG with a third person shooter interface. Both have space magic to an extent, but the Mass Effect universe and lore is far more expansive than Destiny's.

That being said, they're both excellent games. Destiny had a lot of high expectations, and while it falls short in a few of them, overall, it's an expansive world that's a ton of fun to play with friends. As much as I'm enjoying it, however, it's no Mass Effect, and no one should go in with those expectations.

I'm kind of glad that Bungie didn't try to ape Mass Effect. Even the class setups are more akin to some sort of medieval fantasy game, and not by much. In any case, even the earliest gameplay videos of Destiny that were shown showcased the multiplayer, and practically nothing else. It was clear that this game was more about the setting than the story.

That said, I am a little sad that there's no truly memorable characters in the game.

I would recommend at least watching a little on YouTube before making a decision.

I spent a few hours playing a friends copy of the weekend and here is what I think of it.  There isn't a great story behind the game and I would not have expected a good story if Bungie hadn't said there would be an "epic" story.  The combat feels very Haloish with it being really solid, auto-aim is godly I was able to basically snap turn headshots while playing.  With how the classes feel I get a very fantasy vibe to skills, but with more sci-fi weaponry (even if I do play a character with a combat knife and eventually gets a sword).

Basically for me it felt a lot like Borderlands, its a fun game when with friends that doesn't have a lot of story within it.  Now they do have a system similar to the Codex in Mass Effect, but its a joke since it really is just a Wiki on Bungie.Net and not in game at all. I might have bought it if they released it on the PC, but its definitely not worth buying a console for.

Destiny is an odd one for me because I think I'm enjoying it as much as I'm disappointed.

It's a good shooter and the powers give it some distinction in that regard. Also, the levels are MASSIVE so I do feel like you can wander around a planet for hours.

But there's nothing else to the game. Exploration isn't all that impressive because, frankly, there isn't a lot to discover. And even the tower hub is surprisingly slight. I'm shocked that we can't talk to people there, to gleam understanding about the universe.

Also, considering that we're supposed to be "guarding" the last city of civilization, it might have been nice for us to be able to explore it somewhat.

It's a fun game, I find myself looking forward to playing it. But it's also strangely empty.

To answer OP's question: if anything it makes me appreciate Mass Effect's story/characters and world-building even more. Because Destiny proves that it's not the easiest thing to pull off.

Have a lvl 16 hunter gunslinger now....and again....this is my first FPS game, otherwise only games I've played 'with guns' is Mass Effect, smoe SWTOR, and KOTOR. I'm not going to say anything about PvP since I totally suck at it. Also, the motion sickness I had when I first started I have been able to overcome for the most part.....still gets me every now and again.

What I like about the game:

1) Graphics, pretty looking areas, beautiful Vistas

2) Tight combat controls with smooth transitions between weapon and melee

3) Public events.....allthough they so far have also been ALL THE SAME....I have only come across 2 variants so far

4) Strike Missions, but they are really just more of the same of what else you're doing.

5) Armor designs

What I do NOT like about the game:

1) Lack of a story, actually ANY story exposition in the game...to me, people who say the "Story is GREAT!" are smoking something, or don't know what it means to have a story in a game......

2) Enemies are ALL the SAME, just reskins. And WHO are these different factions anyway? Why are they fighting, where did all these baddies come from? Why did we give up the moon to the Hive?

3) Lack of characters in the game to talk to....and the few that are there, the VA is mediocre at best and too low volume to hear anything that's said.

4) Talk about reused environments! Holy moley....and we thought DA2 was bad.....

5) All the 'quests' are the same "Go here, shoot some things and let Dinklebot scan" so....so.....so repetive. No uncovering mysteries, no puzzles, nothing but run here shoot things until they are dead and let your ghost scan something......(doing a mission, Dinklebot says, "We have to let the Speaker know!" So thinking this was important, I went back to tower to talk to Speaker.....nothing was said about what I had just done......)

6) All the battles are basically the same, fight off a couple of waves of red-shirts and then concentrate on the boss (toss a grenade to take out shields then a couple of headshots and done)

7) too hard to set up friend lists and join a clan (SWTOR is light years ahead here)

8) Any meaningful difference between the classes, they are all basically the same, and play the same, and can use the same weapons.

9) Too many in-game currencies

10) Limited vault inventory size

11) No epic feeling to the game, I just don't get where all this epicness that Bungie was talking about is supposed to come from....if the game made me feel epic, or the story/mission was epic, then I wouldn't be putting the game down for large chunks of time.....

12) Poorly done MMO and RPG (like they decided to add a couple of very bare bones aspects into the game).....good shooter, but that's about it

13) Nothing to really find when you explore other than a chest or two and some resources

14) Poor enemy AI

15) I think I will stop here for now.......

I've heard people talk about this auto aim, what is it? When I put a gun up, even if I'm looking in an enemy direction, it aims at the ground and then I have to *woosh* the gun up......and when I'm zoomed in, the little dot doesn't move with the enemies like I have seen some say happens. And during PvP, when that happens......whelp, death to me time

Think of it more like having a larger hit box for areas, its to counter lack of precision compared to using keyboard and mouse.

The auto aim on Destiny will line your shots up provided you get it close enough first. That is if you start off hip firing at the upper torso area and then scope aim while you're firing it will have 'locked' on to a specific areas of your enemies, if you're using the sight and the recoil is dragging your shots over the shoulder the sight will 'correct' itself and your recoil will drag your shots toward your enemies head instead. In short the game is compensating for your poorly placed shot when they happen.

Similar to ME auto aim which locks on (and was very annoying on insanity) but over the top with the auto lining of head shots.

In FPS the sights will line up wherever your gun is pointed if you're aiming at the floor you have the reticule aimed too low while you're not shooting, you'll have to practice keeping it at around enemy head height. Imagine there's a guy around every corner and think where your reticule would need to be to deal with him.

Have fun. :)

My mate has been playing it on ps4 and says it reminds him a hell of a lot of borderlands.

Which we had a hoot playing together co-op a few years ago, but only one play through.

Well I have Destiny and have completed the story to it with a max level character. It's a really fun game, it has great combat, fantastic environments, great pvp and strikes(kinda like raids) and a lot of potential for some really interesting stuff if they decide to expand on the lore, characters and factions.

It's biggest let down is the story, which isn't actually bad, if you pay lots of attention to the mission descriptions and ghost dialogue. The problem was that they didn't have much character development for any character and a lot of the story, if you are not paying attention, it can seem pretty random, such as go here, destroy that, collect this etc. but if you focus on the story for each mission, it is pretty decent stuff. Also another problem is that Destiny has barely half an hour or so of cutscenes(as in taking control away from pc) which to be fair are very well done IMO, but not good enough to overlook the lack of them. A lot happens if you pay attention and are looking where you are supposed to, but it can be missed.

So not really in the same ball park as ME, but still a decent game, I am hoping the expansions are more story focused, but if you don't like fps borderlands-esque games at all, then this probably won't be the game for you.

Destiny will be just like Titanfall.  A watered down bare bones game they get a lot of people hyped out that they can actually get to buy into it and then a month from now it will be stale and you will never hear about it again.
