I don't understand this uproar about the 8 ability hotbar.

First off, does anyone have a link to something officially stating that you absolutely can't use more than 8 abilities at a time?

I've seen no citations in all of these rants about how people are cancelling their preorders over this.

All I've seen are assumptions, and a lot of them at that:
1. That you can't expand or rotate out another hotbar

2. That you can't use abilities manually(without the hotbar)

3. That you can't use abilities from your tactics because they're not in the current hotbar

I haven't seen anything that confirms any of this. Only that there's 8 slots in the PC UI, which is normal(including the item hotkeys).

Also, do that many people really use THAT many abilities EVERY encounter. Even on the harder difficulties I never found it necessary to use more than 5 or 6 for the most part.

Another point is, adding an expanded hotbar is really really really not a difficult thing for Bioware to do. So if they don't include it at all, then it has to be purely a design/balance choice, in which case we have to just play the game to see if it works well. And if I'm 100% wrong about all of this, I wouldn't be surprised if it was modded in within days/weeks.

That's all I wanted to say on this topic, I feel like people are being overly sensitive about it is all, but this happens with every little detail of every single game so I guess it's normal. Meh.

Haha, yeah. I'm always surprised that there's SO many people that still don't know how to have a rational discussion about anything.

And I know there's a topic on the subject, but it seems like more of a hate topic. This is more to discuss how it can actually work out, rather than panicking about it being a filthy console port.

Pc gamers have been getting screwed with many releases? can you blame us? especially when the number of slot is 8 which is equivalent to the number of shortcut slots consoles can use without the radial menu.

i was looking forward to this game going back to its roots similar to DAO but with more fluid combat, yet now it feels like i have been misled. Its disappointing.

There have been TOO many cases a gameplay choice was made to make it easier for console users using controllers.

You must be new here. Welcome to BSN where people blow everything out of proportion.

I thought it was especially bad over the last week.

First the MP/microtransactions announcement, which lead to masses of people declaring what a terrible thing it is if DAI offers optionally MP, that they are outright sure every single developer of Bioware will lie to them about the influence of MP to single player, and with the fact that microtransactions, which they are not going to pay for anyways, are really bad, because EA makes money with them and finances an optional play mode they don't use.

Next the Solas thing which brought again the usual discussions of why straight, why not gay, etc. in addition to the fact that he is race-locked, bringing the same inane arguments about him being a racist up again.

And now the PC screenshot which makes some crybabies (just look at how many threads they open, the language they use and the fonts they use!) believe the world is coming to an end if they have the same restrictions as console players.

I am just waiting for the the Keep discussions (which I truly find amazing) are dominated again by the age-old discussions of how Leiliana being alive invalidates every choice and consistent world state there could ever be, because Bioware screwed up again and is in every way horrible.

Yeah, ok, it's probably too much to ask that a forum about a game is fun and enjoyment itself, rather than a constant discussion of who gets what and why the developers aren't catering to me and my personal wishes...but the amount of vitriol I've read lately has been taken to absurd levels.

You're right, we should go back to talking about that bethany incest romance idea or maybe how the companions sweat taste like. Totally more interesting and exciting.

Melodrama over changed features is a common occurrence when Bioware releases gameplay mechanics. I heard the reaction was very dramatic back when Bioware revealed a list inventory system instead of the grid at DAO release.

If DAI is good, then most of the backlash over 8 slots will disappear. If it bombs, then people will use this as one of the bullet points on why it failed. Right now people just need something to talk/complain about.

Only #3 is an assumption. It was confirmed that you can only manually use the 8 quickslotted abilities during combat, and the only way to change that is by re-binding them outside of combat.

And yes, people did use more than 8 abilities. Not everyone is you.

I'm not sure why everyone uses the term troll whenever they see something they don't agree with, that's not what it means.

Thank you for the links though. It doesn't say anything about tactics needing to draw from the hotbar though.

The tweets make it sound like it is a very conscious decision that 32 active abilities gives plenty of room for tactical decisions. Sounds like you'll have a better focus and less clutter.

Again, they're making a UI specifically for PC, it would be super easy to add another bar of hotkeys if they wanted. They're not "screwing" PC players to cater to the consoles. They've decided it's best to limit it to 8. I think it's fine, if it makes you die in every battle then complaints could be valid.

Why has no one pointed out that consoles have 6 abilities(1 on X Y and B plus the secondary list), not 8. Your argument is now invalid.

Its just a nerd rage topic,(both sides) people will be over about it when the next announcement comes to past.

By the way Welcome to BSN.

It really is disappointed has a pc gamer but think the past games spoiled  "us" pc gamers with a better interface then consoles had, it will past and people will get over it.

Don't jinx the keep thread.. it's been relatively peaceful and easy going over there.

K lets just delete the forum and all become fanboys that treats biowares word like gospel truth. Is that ok with you? I mean its not like Bioware has lied consistently in the past or anything. let me just spend that $60 without a single bit of skepticism.

I have no clue. Didn't we get something for the A button in the other games? If we paused and used the menu.

In DAO and DA2 A was Activate/Auto-Attack. From what I understand it's now Jump with Activate/Auto-Attack being moved to a trigger.

Here's what I've noticed: I really like what we've seen of the Keep, I think multiplayer looks like it could be fun once I'm done with my first single player run, and I could not care less who Solas wants to spend naked time with. No one noticed.

I dislike the 8 ability limitation and provide feedback accordingly, and that (to some, apparently) makes me a crybaby.

I think the limitation results from accommodations made to allow the game to be played "action style" with a controller without having to pause to navigate a radial menu, and that makes me (again, to some apparently) a crazy conspiracy theorist trapped in a PC persecution fantasy.

Look, I have a long history of buying BioWare products and pretty much loving them, which has led me to have a certain fondness for the studio itself and the personalities, past and present, associated with it. Even so, I cannot understand the need some people seem to have to respond to any criticism of BioWare like a pack of shrill harpies, flinging their virtual forum excrement at anyone with the audacity to point to a design decision and say "I don't like that bit there."

Put down the Kool Aid.
