I don't understand this uproar about the 8 ability hotbar.

1st. The 8-ability, no radial menu is on both console and PC and is overall a reduction for both. (Both had access to the radial menu after all). This is a total different gameplay decision that they made for a reason that will likely make sense once we play the game.

2nd. Not all PC players play with a keyboard and a hotbar. Some play with a controller tethered to the PC. This means that whatever your choice of playstyle on PC, the amount of abilities stays the exact same, along with consoles. This was true before as controller PC players could use the radial menu just as the keyboard ones were, allowing them the same number of options. The elimination of the radial menu made the 8-button hotbar a necessity to ensure continuing with the same number of options.

3rd. Most importantly, this could be a balancing thing, as if everyone has 8 options, I'd imagine balancing enemies only has to be done once per difficulty for all game versions (for this specific only-8 ability set up)

4th. As a side effect of all this, keyboard-PC players and controller-PC players will both be a valid option in multiplayer on the dedicated PC servers, as neither has an obvious advantage.

To be honest, the only thing BioWare has done here is made a gameplay decision for more thought out ability choice, and applied it to everyone PC or otherwise, equally. Just like how tactical camera is now cross-platform. It's a change they've rolled out to everyone, and that deserves to be commended, not condemned. I know it's a big change, but it's a big one for everybody. Personal opinion: no one console should get any advantage in a cross-platform game. Not Xbone's first here DLC, nor a 10 ability choice for PC players. Parity is important. EA might be ignoring that, but BioWare clearly isn't. Please keep that in mind.

Rock on folks (even you, yes you, who hasn't read this at all)!

Meanwhile we console players got our 6 quick action set ups from the last two games, 3 for each one.

So no change for us folk.

And you can't choose abilities from the radial menu anymore, yay?

After the last two releases from BioWare's Edmonton studio, I think a lot of people who are excited for this game are afraid that they are "unjustified in their excitement." I really did enjoy DA2, but despite some moments of true genius that brought all the feels, ME3 was a huge overall disappointment after being one of my most anticipated games of all time.

There is a lot of hope and fear all mixed together on this forum--hope that this game will live up to its potential, and fear that it will reveal another inexplicable screw-up.

I can understand people being hesitant about certain things but at the same time people must also try and remain balanced in their approach to voicing concerns they may have.

I also really enjoyed DA2 (bar visiting the same cave/alleyway multiple times) and as for ME3 i also rather enjoyed that game also, i got the ending i wanted (synthesis). But Bioware have already told us they have learned from the issues in both DA2 and ME3, so no reused caves/MP is completely seperate. I already know i'm going to love this game as much as any of the others in the franchise from what they have shown (would love to see more skyhold stuff though).

@Bold,I doubt it.I think Bioware implemented these restrictions not to make it easier for console players but to make it gel well with the multiplayer mechanics.I mentioned a few weeks back on how in order to implement multiplayer in DAI it's core gameplay would have to be altered.

That's why there's no radial menu during combat and why there's a limit on talents/spells.

I figured, if they are getting rid of the radial menu, its being done under the same mentality of removing regenerating health and reducing healing spells. Trying to appeal to the "hardcore" darksouls audience and make things "better" for game difficulty.

Said it before, i'll say it again, very disappointed in this, and I have pretty much been chipper about everything I've seen with this game, but never have I only used 8 abilities in this series.

First thing I hope some brilliant people help me mod around because frankly it's just not acceptable to me. Having 8 ability slots makes me feel like I am playing Diablo 3, not Dragon Age Inquisition. What happened to freedom to tackle enemies how I wanted them to be tackled?

Plus what happens if you wanted sustained abilities. 4 sustained abilities and then 4 useable abilities? Unless sustained abilities are all gone and it is simply passives now, either way that's still too few.

Also before someone comes in here and tries to tell me what I need, don't bother. I have played about 200 hours + on DA2 and DA:O + DLC. I know how I play my dragon age games, and that way is with more then 8 ability slots. Maybe some people can't handle that but I am more then up for the "challenge" of more then 8 ability slots.

Oh god. I *think* the original PC UI thread that was locked or the MP thread.

From what we can tell, sustains are all gone.

So? Why should I suffer because others choose to play a game clearly better played on KB+M on a controller?

Then I can't really confirm it for myself, which means all my discussion going forwards going to be hypothetical.

If, this is hypothetically happening, its disappointing and a departure from dragon age. But so is no health regeneration, or a cut down on avaliable potions and healing spells, or blood magic and spirit healers.

But almost everyone unanimously praised those decisions, so honestly the effect of being "mad", more irritated really, at these decisions doesn't hold the weight it does anymore with this revelation, not to mention the same argument for those changes easily applies to this one as well.

So I'll grin, bear it, and play DA2 without using the radical menu in order to get trained in this new combat style.

EDIT: Well I guess its confirmed then, oh well.

Actually health regen (as I understand it) is a slider in the difficulty settings. I am not sure about the healing spells, I haven't heard anything concrete but if they've nerfed heals, I'll just drop the difficulty down. I assume that a low healing pot capacity means they'll drop more often as loot, because no one is going to be ok with having to return to camp just to stock up on consumables.

If it turns out that, in an effort to make combat more "challenging" they've just made it a pain in the ass, then I for one will just drop everything down to easy mode and faceroll through my first run, waiting for a patch or mod to fix things so that I can have a challenge without a lot of tedium.

Without also implementing the nuances of Dark Souls combat? It isn't going to fly.

Well the answer seems simple enough no? because PC gamers that play MMOs and RPGs that are tactical, always had more freedom in the skill bar and that comes from KnM set up. For me it make no difference and I am a PC gamer but I find it unfair to force a console type of set skills on the PC players, that likes to have a lot of skills and access to them in the lower bar.

Actually, from what I understand, Bioware is deliberately making the potions more scarce, so be prepared for multiple return trips.

Clear assumption on your part. And clearly combat parity makes single player easier for the devs to balance just as it does multiplayer. Thanks for cherry-picking!

Well, I'd rather play on a lower difficulty setting then to head back to camp every 30 minutes, but we'll see how it shakes out in practice.
