I always brought along Alister in Origins bc he was such a likable character and his arguments with Morrigan were entertaining plus he just gave the party a...balance. It felt like the game was a lot easier when there was someone to draw the enemies away and have the health/armor to take the damage while my rogue flanked behind them & backstabbed everything. So i always brought Alister along and got the notion that you must have a sword & board character/tank in your party; So when I got to DA:II and saw Aveline I went "Ahaah!" and put her into my party atomactically until her voice and personality dulled me to death and when I started to notice that she was dealing out little to no damage I decided to just roll with Fenris instead. Now we are about to receive the godsend also known as Inquisition...and I don't know why but Cassandra reminds me so much of the boring and ineffective Aveline; maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps a balanced party doesn't need a sword and board warrior to tank? What do you think?
Alister, Aveline, Cassandra...Do you need a sword/board warrior to tank?

No. It's just the more conventional way to tank, and aggro control is a bit easier.

Cassandra doesn't even have to be a tank, you can have her be a damage dealer and make Iron Bull - for example - go sword and board if you so desire (if you still want to try having a traditional tank around).
I think that you can get away with not having traditional sword and board tanking for a number of things, but it can be effective (and even necessary) on some encounters.

Can I be the damage dealer while still using a sword and shield? I don't want to tank but I also don't like the way you use the two-handed weapons.

yes and no. You will never be able to equal the damage output of a two hander.

I'll avoid using a tank as much as possible... I plan on switching Cassandra to two handed anyway and I certainly won't be including Iron Bull and Blackwall on every mission. Hopefully it'll be like DA:O and DA2, and won't be a requirement on the higher difficulties.

I imagine it will depend on a great many factors. Though it will really depend on what role you assign for each person individually. I imagine you can have someone be the 'tank' of your party with any combination of weapons or skills you want to. I think it will depend on how potions will work (like Rock Armor) and how the whole defensive magic system will work. For instance even if you have Iron Bull as a two handed warrior, if you focus your defensive efforts on him, give him potions, lots of health, and then the defensive spells from your mages, then he will be your de facto tank.

Play on nightmare. That will teach you the value of a tank. Seriously.

Seems more like your problem was more with Avelines personality than her usefulness as a tank. I personally thought Alister whined and cried WAY too much for a grown man and seasoned warrior*Snip*
Aveline was great all around imo, especially when paired up with Isabela and SarcasticHawke but Aveline is straight talker through and no BS much like Cassandra
Tanking seems to play a more effective role in Inquisition so whether it her,Blackwall, or Iron Bull you've got variety

I do, they protect my Mages.
Aveline is a complete monster in DA2 and if you have the ring, or her specific shield, that reflects 100% basic damage back she can kill things by letting them hit her shield.

I don't know if it's just my playstyle or what but sword and shield warriors are useless when I'm playing. They don't have any dmg. Only thing that happens with them is that rest of your party dies and then you are against 10 enemies with character who don't do any dmg. And then you keep popping health potions and hitting them half of hour to kill them all. Ugh.
2 hand warriors are better tanks in my opinion. They can still tank and they actually do something in the battle as well.

Hmph. Never used tank even on nightmare, unless I was one myself. Just take control of your 2-hander during difficult encounters.

Tank yourself. Don't let the AI Scrubs do it. Be invincible, unstoppable. Go and play a Tank!

fenris was a glass cannon in my game, so i always took aveline. You can tank with a two hander and be somewhat effective, but on the harder difficulties, you wont make it without that extra defence the shield tank provides.

My Human Warriors normally run with a shield and axe/mace combo. I can't wait to do a quest with Cassandra, Iron Bull, Blackwall and my Human Warrior all shield bashing the faces of the bad guys.

You technically don't need any one thing. This all comes down to your style of play. I like to play the damage dealer, while the tank provides defense and crowd control, a mage for support and more crowd control and maybe another damage dealer (two-hander or rogue) alongside my PC.
In DA:O, Alistair went everywhere with my rogue Warden, and I found the combat dynamic very satisfying.

I like having a tank around just because then I don't have to worry so much about my fragile DPSers as they annihilate things. It certainly helps that all the potential tanks in DAI (Cass, Blackwall, IB) are characters I'd want to use anyway, for reasons beyond their basic utility.

Need that Rogue if you want to get that precious Chest and Trap EXP, though.

Actually in DA2, Using a 2hander was better for aggro control and damage while the sword and shield was better for absorbing damage.
