fenris was a glass cannon in my game, so i always took aveline.  You can tank with a two hander and be somewhat effective, but on the harder difficulties, you wont make it without that extra defence the shield tank provides.

Wrong. You can finish the game even solo. Dependence on tank in deceiving and makes you think less on tactical approach of the combat. Fighting is like dancing, you have to know and read steps to be good.

I prefer having a tank in the party. In both DA:O and DA2 I built out Alistair and Aveline as tanks/CC. My Mages and Rogues could hang back and vaporize everything without consequence most of the time.

Soloing the game on harder difficulties relies on cheesing mechanics more than anything really, most notably using "kiting" and aggro resets.

So no you're wrong.

The point of a tank is to hold targets in place for steady dps and actually allow strategies to work.

You always need a front line :)

I said wrong in response to the claim, that "you won't make it" without tank on harder difficulties. I fail to see where I was wrong, as you certainly will "make it", if you put your brain to work. Also, I fail to see how's kiting or aggro switch considered a cheesy mechanics, since they're one of the most basic tactics.

Hacking and slashing your way through everthing sucks. Why bother with a tank, healer, croud control, debuffer, buffer, or lockpick if their rolls aren't equal to a dps class?

As a rogue I always need my tank to absorb the enemies while I slip behind and stab them.

I've never been a fan of two-handed weapons, and I've never found shield-and-sword warriors to be a problem, particularly. Not with the right armaments and weapons. Alistair was great, Aveline did fine. Shale was my REAL tank, though. But that's Shale.

I was usually the "tank". All I know is, Sten and Oghren (especially Sten) are very quick to die. They'll probably drop faster than Leliana.

I also find that two-handers attack too slowly to be effective damage dealers. But that was DA:O. I haven't tried it in DA2.

I intend on building a Tanky Iron Bull while still being a damagedealer two hander, hopefully I could make some sort of compromise. I was able to build Fenris as a pseudo tank despite being a twohander and he fared pretty well. However, I also plan on running Knight Enchanter so hopefully I'll be able to strafe some blows too though it's been confirmed that they won't nearly be as tanky as Arcane Warrior was.

I'll avoid using a tank as much as possible... I plan on switching Cassandra to two handed anyway and I certainly won't be including Iron Bull and Blackwall on every mission.  Hopefully it'll be like DA:O and DA2, and won't be a requirement on the higher difficulties.

interesting enough, if you play Dragon Age Heroes on your phone and are lucky enough to get Cassandra she is a Two Hander.

Shale was best Tank, agreed, im curious did anyone else level Shales Dex and Magic some what to in order to better improve her defense and potion use?

There's always been ways around it.  In Origins, you can tank with a 2-handed (indomitable is useful here) or even with a mage (Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer being most popular but I built with an Arcane Warrior/Shapeshifter in bear form that worked quite nicely).

In DA2, because of the way defence worked, the best way to built a damage-absorber was to throw large amounts of points into Constitution.  Fenris/Carver/Warrior Hawke all got the Battlemaster tree, with those basics of tanking Taunt and Bravery.  By the end of my most recent playthrough, I was tanking on my 2-handed reaver more than Aveline was on her sword-and-board style.

Play on nightmare. That will teach you the value of a tank. Seriously.

Only in DA2 for me, I never used a tank in nightmare DAO.

In DA2? Probably don't, But in DAI? Of course we do. We can't automatically heal ourself, time is everything when game gets harder, thank god we got two tough tanks this time.

I spec my characters according to RP and their backstory.

As such Alistair, Aveline and most probably Cassandra would be sword & board warriors. The difference lay in their spec as sword & board.

Alistair was an anti-magic tank. Aveline was just flat out the tank. Cassandra would be a mix of tank and offense.

I am not sure how I should spec Blackwall though. Sword & board or Two Handed ? Because I am fully sure that Iron Bull will be a very offensive Two Handed warrior.

You can make a high cunning and high constitution Fenris. Use sustainables to increase his critical chance. He will deal decent damage and soak up a great deal of damage.
