The ending broke my heart

I know it's been years and you must've heard enough of this. Sorry for that :(

Just played through the Mass Effect trilogy yesterday. The ending of Shepard literally freaked me out.

Cuz unconsciously I put too many feelings in this game in this role and all his charming companions like Kaidan, Liara, Tali, Miranda et al.

Even if Shepard survived, the mass relay is destroyed, he may never meet his companions again.

It is said that in ME4 they won't appear again. So unwillingly I think this is the end of his legend.

Maybe the biggest reason why I feel this terrible is because I'm not ready to say goodbye.

Need comfort :(

Sadly, I have no comfort to give.

On a PC, the ending can be modded to...not suck so much.  But it's not available to everyone.  And it certainly won't factor into MENext   :(

Save the Citadel DLC till after you've completed the game. Let it be your new ending. :(

Chances are, ME4 will take place in the Reaper war, but simply in every place Shepard never went.

Similar to DA1 and DA2, I think they'll let you import your choices to have passing references to some happenings.

But yes, it's the end of the Shepard arc, and he deserves the rest.

So many memories in the Citadel DLC, which also makes the ending more heart-broken.

This sounds pretty awful. We'd basically have to fight reaper enemies at some point, and possibly even some Cerberus, because unless the protagonist's story is totally removed from the war where the reapers simply never reached and Cerberus has zero presence, they're bound to have some sort of encounter. The war only went on for a few months, and by the end, the reapers were pretty much occupying every major system. Do not want.

If your speculation is true...then the ending of ME4 will probably depend on the ending of ME3

I think that's the last thing I wanna know now...

It broke my heart too... I played ME1 & 2 like 20-30 times. ME3 I've finished 1 time (+the extended cut)  I just saw so much wasted potential...all the things they could've done but rushed instead. There are a lot of good parts to ME3...but that ending just depressed me so much and I still haven't gotten over it. Hopefully someday I will and I'll be able to finish another playthrough.

I think it was a pretty good ending for a great series that spanned five RL years.

They wanted to make it obvious that this would be the end of Shepard's adventures, and two of the end options did exactly that.

For those wanting a nostalgic trip, there is always the Citadel DLC.

You're right. All good things must come to an end.

Sometimes it's just not so easy to say goodbye.

I'm sure it'll get better with time.

This. It'll give closure. It's one big laugh fest where everyone's invited. And if you don't like the ME ending, just think of this as the new "ending"

Mine too man, mine too. I guess some small part of me was hoping that they would all fly off into the galaxy never to be seen again. I guess this is the fairest way to stop people asking for him to return. I dont think I will ever play the first three again. But I digress, time to move forward. I applaud Bioware for making such an incredible cast of characters and engaging the audience on such an emotional level.

It may seem awful, but to be honest, they'd run out of enemy types unless they did it this way.

Mass Effect built itself on slaughtering varying mercenaries, geth, cerberus, and collectors. Completely removing itself from the Shepard arc means a whole list of new enemies, which Bioware has done well.

They did say there would be nods to "Shepard's adventures", meaning that it's either during or after the Reaper war. If it's post Reaper war, they'd either have to explain the presence of friendly Reapers, or the complete repair of the Mass Relay network.

With the ending creating such diversely different possibilities, they then either retcon the super ending, or set it during the Reaper war.

All this sounds so disheartening.

The developers have boxed in their options by the options they made before. ME3 reached a galactic climax creep, which while necessary, is ultimately going to cause more disappointment.

It will, but probably not much.

The Citadel DLC makes a fine emotional end to the Shepard trilogy if not a narrative one. Although, as mentioned, you can do that too with mods.

I feel ya. It was a emotional low blow for met too and broke my heart. Even though Shepard survived in my ending. And if BW takes the easy way out and just jumps galaxies and go from there, that would be adding insult to injury.

I get that they want the story to be over, but continuation is a big part of the universe in my book. If not as a game, then as part of the story.

So references should be related to savegames and not vague. Which granted, wont be too easy with some of the endings. But since the effects of each ending was pretty much limited to one galaxy... it would work I suppose. But to be fair, I have no hope for anything good to come from the next Mass Effect that will give fans like me, who's heart broke at the end of ME3, that little bit of closure that we need. I till don't understand why an ending like the MAHEM one was no option for them. It would have been ok with fans, I guess, and they had the same starting point like they do have now. I mean, it is basically is the Red Ending without the Plotholes.

The worst thing I can come up with is that the new Main Hero will be part of the final assault on the reapers and when they all jumped to get away from the crucible will be catapulted with a ton more ships of different races into a new galaxy. Or that that happened to his ancestors. Depending on when it will take place.

Edit:

The best possible thing, in my mind, is that in some way they could integrate the new main character being part of the Squad that goes through the remains of the reapers to salvage and/or look for survivors in the aftermath, depending on the chosen ending, would find shepard alive and gets him/her to a medevac, where he/she is reunited with friends or just dont find him/her but others. Before the main plot takes off.

But hey, that's just me dreaming.

It didn't break my heart, it just frustrated me that Shepard has no closure.

Its possible Shepard could come back for another game. Only time will tell.

meh, I loved the 39 hours and 50 minutes before it enough, so I didn't let 10 minutes phase me. If I were like that, there would be a LOT of franchises on my hate list- TDK trilogy, Fullmetal Alchemist, this, etc.

I know, I know "the ending isn't just a random 10 minutes, it is the most important part of writing". I simply don't see it that way. Never have, never will (which I guess is one reason why you will never see my authoring novels or scripts)

Edit: one thing about your post, you do realize the relays actually weren't destroyed if Shepard lives (assuming you had Extended Cut installed)

Yep, but don't even know how many years it's gonna take to be repaired and I think we'll never know.

Well, if ME4 is set not long after ME3, there will likely be Mass Relays involved, so that'd be one way to know the answer.

I had exactly the same experience. Frankly, unless ME4 revitalizes the Mass Effect galaxy for me, I doubt I'll ever play 3 a second time.
