Its a parasite that eats mana and its host slowly mutates into "mortal realmed" abominations. But like all parasites it needs more sustanance and some how it infects others either by contact or asexually, hell even by airborne infection of templar lyrium reserves. It has no goal but to feed and propagate.
Now here are its powers; it at first enhances templar power and to so extent they gain the use magic in order to create a "dependance" so the victim will use it more. After x time the victim mutates and depending on their level of infection they devolve into behemoths. These behemoths can infect others but it doesnt always work due to whatever factor.
Now i realize i may be wrong but its the newest theory on red lyrium i have. Rip it to shreds with discussion

Hrm.
I'm not sure what theories I could come up with that didn't reference any spoilers now, but there's still plenty of room for theories with how little context is presented in half of the aforementioned spoilers.
So. I get the impression we're going to see some serious elf stuff, considering that elf in the trailer and those concept arts of Arlathan that were posted about, not to mention the oddities surrounding Felassan.
As in, I feel there's a very good chance that we're going to be seeing some real Ancient Elves.

(I'll spoiler tag all this since its likely colored by me having seen the whole art book too)

More creepy elf****. Interesting give us your more vague theory dusks
I think there may be places in which ancient Elves yet remain, in lands the Tevinter could not reach.
I do not know what purpose they will serve in this story, but I do believe they likely have some insight into what is happening.
I'm expecting there to be quite a lot of religious sort of themes in Inquisition, so we're probably going to be learning more about what their beliefs actually were, rather than the Dalish imitations.

That's quite possible, since Thedas is only part of a bigger world and not all of Thedas is mapped.

From DA2 and how red lyrium affected Meredith, I was assuming its more infectious to the mind, while addiction is the physical aspects of it. Or perhaps you go even more insane as Meredith in the end if you don't get more of it. Another thread popped up about noticing Carroll the Templar (the templar crossing you on boat in the first game) being possibly one of the leaders of the Red Templars. To my knowledge, Carroll was already affected by lyrium of the blue kind, he was already deteriorating. However, he seems quite competent in one of his correspondences. Maybe red lyrium caused this in some way? Can it somewhat reverse the affects of blue lyrium?
I know.
That smile was just so perfect.
I think I know which smile you're referring to. >_> *shudders*

I think one of the devs said at some point that Red lyrium is anti magic and since blue lyrium is magic in some way that might be true.

If that's the case, I picture quite a few Templars leaving the Order and joining the Red Templars, either wanting to be freed from their addiction in any way or just trying to find a lyrium fix in general. But, unfortunately, its just as bad of an addiction as from blue lyrium, possibly worse.

interesting idea it can "heal" addiction. But trade one for another more potent substance. From DA2 and how red lyrium affected Meredith, I was assuming its more infectious to the mind, while addiction is the physical aspects of it. I always assumed Red Lyrium was a by Product of the Elder One. Considering how it made Meredith more Paranoid and willing to go down insane roads...And if we still believe it was The Elder One who caused Loghain to take the extreme route in protecting Frereldan from Orlais by betraying Calin.

Well, that all depends on who or what exactly the Elder One is.
The Artbook itself doesn't seem to use that title for any of the characters presented, so either none of them are the Elder One or "The Elder One" is just the name being used to keep his identity hidden from us players.

Ohh interesting we have spoilers but really only clues ohh yes im a happy monkey
Well, they don't refer to anyone as the Elder One, but they do make it clear who the main villain we'll actually be seeing is.
Why would spoilers be bad? The purpose is to figure out who or what The Elder One is.
I suppose I could send you some spoilers in a PM?

Welp.
I'm currently wondering what role the Architect might be playing in Inquisition if he isn't dead.
Due to reasons, him showing up in Inquisition could be very, very interesting.

I'm curious, too. Too bad I kill him like every time, though, lol.
I don't know...I always think that it's just a terrible idea to let him live. In one of my playthroughs, I'll have to make a save state in the Keep where he's alive.
And you, who has the artbook, saying this makes me very anxious. What role if any will darkspawn have? Or, will it have any relation to darkspawn even if the Architect were to show up? Oh, the possibilities!

Well, the Architect himself isn't in the artbook, but the Darkspawn and the Taint do seem to be playing a role.
