Kind of hope The Elder One is The Makers version of the Angel of Death and that he gets sent out to begin preparing/purging the world for The Makers return.
But that implies he serves the Maker and he dismisses the Maker seeing himself as greater.

But are we sure that was the Elder Ones voice or one of its lackey believing he received so much power that he became a god.

Depends on how much freedom of thought the maker lets his minions have. He can **** talk his boss all he wants, but can still know his place on the totem pole of badassery. Mind you I know absolutely nothing about him as I've finally broke my self imposed BSN/spolier ban and I'm really behind on what is known about the game so far.

I doubt we are going to have any real villain connected to the Maker since that would prove the existence of the maker which David Gaider said he would leave ambiguous.

Thats a good point. do we really think we will speak to the Elder One? we didn't ever speak to Urthemiel but he was still our big bad. so it wouldn't be uncommon for BioWare to just create a voiceless Villain and let others speak for it.

Barindur, which was around when Tevinter was slowly expanding, disappeared. Was presumed that the city lost favor with Dumat.
Honetly, how can a city disappear like that
There was also a thaig where all the people disappeared and all there was left was a dagger if I remember correctly.
But that implies he serves the Maker and he dismisses the Maker seeing himself as greater.
EO is pretty much the Devil.

The EO does speak though, Urthemiel seem to have lost some of it intelligence after being corrupted by the taint and pretty much seem to act on some sort of unknown goal that might not his own.

How do you know EO speaks? Many people spoke during the EoT trailer, but we are just assuming that voice at the beginning and end is EO. it could easily not be.
I'm not saying it isn't the EO because i'm pretty positive it is. it's just we have no proof it is or isn't the EO.

Yea that would probably open an entire can of worms that I could Bioware definitely not wanting to deal with if they were to endorse one side or the other, even if its just a game.

This game is about faith so i think it is going to be the choice to have faith in the maker. faith that he exists, faith that he has abandoned us, etc etc. so i think we are going to see a lot of ambiguous entities which may or may not be connected to the many different religions of thedas.
Like i am pretty sure that's Andraste who saves us at the beginning of the game, and i think a lot of the regulars in this thread agree with that even if they don't like it.
But right there you can have faith in the maker because she saves you, or you can easily state, well her ashes were in the temple with me so maybe fade magic turned her essence into a spirit etc etc.
Pretty much i think when it comes to the religious things in this gave they aren't going to give us any hard facts that that push us in any way. just things we can speculate about.

He has to speak or how else is he going give orders to the people under him?
Even Urthemiel "spoke" to it's troops (as we saw in the Darkspawn DLC), but we never heard it in DA:O.

Well speaking is a vague term, if you mean like speak like we do there is not proof he does that. and we don't have much proof he has subordinates either. we believe the Venatori "listen" to him but they could be worshiping the EO just like the Dragon cult at the temple of ashes. she never spoke to them but still articulated what she wanted or her feelings.
All i'm saying is we have no evidence on either side of the argument.

True, but never the less there has to be some sort of communication or way for us to know his motivations in game.

Yeah, I was gonna mention that Thaig where all the inhabitants disappeared leaving on a staff. Apparently, its located "above" the primeval thaig. They specialized in mining lyrium, so who knows if they accidentally unleashed something.

Sh*tty it would be indeed.
I can think of better written villains, which I prefer over some lame plot device as the Catalyst.

There have been "evil" computers who has gone nuts because of their programming, the starbrate is nothing more then a small dot on a long list of those kind of computers, the only thing it is, is a horribly written plot device thrown in at the last minute to make everything so called clear and at the same time philosophical, which it fails miserably at because ME was never about that, if it was the Matrix it would have made sense.
I prefer a villain like Darth Vader who can step into a room and make you say "please don't kill me" over a some F class villain who just shows up in order to explain everything and expect you to take it as fact before giving you "choices" and expect you choose one them even though you have proven the villain was wrong all along.
