Well, we've got to cover all possible angles.
So.
If we go to the Black City at some point, what do people think it would be like?

Its mostly obsidian coloured with green hues

Possibly victorian era influenced.

Hrm. Well, I'm expecting something eerily beautiful in terms of aesthetics, with various bits of horror mixed in, but I was more asking what people here thought it would be like to be in the city and what might be enountered there.

I'm stretching here, but I expect it to have a monochromatic color scheme, with a certain urban atmosphere.

I'm expecting a massive relatively straight forward construct; there is no real sense of physics within the fade so expect something entirely alien and beyond comprehension.
Or that would be how i'd design it.
It would be like the interior of a blackhole, pure speculation until you see it.

And who would be living there?
Is the place constructed as a real city chould be, or is it the ideal of a city?
It was supposedly once inhabited by the souls of the dead. Has that changed? Are any still there? How does one design a city for such beings?
Xenomorph.
So, sort of organic/technological?

I know, but they're made in that artstyle.
Now, I suppose it's possible that if we got up close to the Black City, we would find that it was made of people/twisted souls, all singing an eery and horrifying song together. That would be fun.
But seeing as it's the root of the taint, what do you think we might find inside?
Oh. And I'm seeing something interesting in this artbook. I don't know what it is, but it shows up in multiple pictures.

I'm thinking it would look like a dying weed doing Escher.
The Golden City was built in the Fade, a realm in which reality is split into more than your three dimensions, and logic need not apply. But it's corruption would twist it, giving it an almost organic quality from the darkspawn plague, so stairways that led up and down simultaneously now twist into loops that only are end in walls, doorways in the ground that don't lead anywhere, and always, on the edge of hearing, the song. Something beautiful, but badly changed, out of tune, with the tempo varying, and out of order.
That's the black city,

I imagine the Black City as being a sprawling place made out of black marble and obsidian mansions, towers, and halls, all seamless and appearing as though each building was raised, fully intact, from the ground itself. It would also be almost completely silent, with the exception of a barely-audible song that seems to echo off the walls. It would be both beautiful, enticing, and fear-inducing all at once.
As for the creatures...eldritch abominations that seemed made out of shadows. Some would resemble anemones with piercing yellow eyes set in a ring around their bodies, while others would be monstrous birds or humanoid entities worse than any fear or terror demon. Any Grey Wardens in your expedition team would tell you that the monsters you'd find seemed to be made, wholesale, out of the darkspawn corruption. Beyond these horrors, there would no spirits, no souls of the dead, and not even the spectral forms of any dreamers anywhere in sight.

Sounds good... Still, I'm curious as to what would be inside other than alien architecture.
Also, as to that thing I noticed in the artbook...

That idea reminds me of the Flood in Halo, and their "Pure Forms" that develop after they're suitably established.
Sounds absolutely lovely.

You can't enter the buildings, the darkspawn plague has sealed them, no entrances remain until the Golden city is cleansed.
The figure (or at least a similar one) also shows up in some attempts to seal fade rifts, perhaps they're humans who have wasted away in the real world, and now reside only in the fade, like Niall from Origins.

Urgh, The Flood. They freaked me completely out when i first encountered them in Halo CE. It does get me thinking though. Assuming we do enter a silent and empty black city in the future, a scenario where we all of a sudden encounter "pure" tainted abominations would be pretty darn cool. It could also be really creepy, atleast in my mind since Im comparing this encounter with the Flood reveal. That idea reminds me of the Flood in Halo, and their "Pure Forms" that develop after they're suitably established.

I'm actually caught between expecting it to be utterly horrific on the inside, or eerily remniscient of the Heaven it was supposed to be, with a more subtle sort of mindfuck horror. Something like the song that the Darkspawn hear, where it seems indescribably beautiful and entrancing, even if you realize that it's somehow wrong.
I suppose that's it. It needs to both be beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Preferably in a way that makes its beauty terrifying. Something that tempts you to delve deeper and give into it...

I just had a further thought on the matter.
What if there's some distorted time **** going on in the city, so off in the distance you can always hear music and laughter, and people generally having a good time, and you can see doorways in the distance with golden light shining from them or their cracks, and maybe even seeing scenes of seeming goodness in the distance or at the end of hallways. However, the light always fades away as you approach or open the doors. The music and light always stays distant, just out of reach.
I suppose it would be neat to just show how the City is something beyond the normal rules of time, while still tantalizingly keeping the Golden City just out of reach as chasing its alluring visions only leads you deeper and deeper into the darkness.
Also, it's the thought of the City actually blackening with your every step within its halls, and how you can never actually touch the light.

That's the point.
Bonus points if it makes you feel guilty for intruding upon its ruin and past glories, like you're desecrating something sacred, like a grave or a cherished memory of better, more innocent times. While still urging you to continue on your path as the Light fades further and further away.
