Perhaps the source of the taint would only be revealed to you when you've entered the city deep enough for the light to fade away completely.
Yes, that would probably work best thematically.

That city is pure knowledge but at the same time maddness
Hrm. Yes.
I think a contrast is very important for creating something truly unsettling. You could just go pure spooky, grotesque, or horrific, but that wouldn't capture the feeling of something beautiful that was ruined by the arrogance of man.
And yet, as much as I can imagine ideas for the architecture, I can't quite imagine anything for denizens besides the pure taint monstrosities that Markus suggested.
Really, I'm not entirely sure it should have anything living in it. Whatever could be there, I think any journey into the Black City should be a unique experience, very different from any other in the game. It can't just feel like some Ancient Temple or the Deep Roads.

Since the Fade changes based on our perceptions then I wonder if the black city will look differently to people depending on how they believe it will look like? In other words, no 2 people will see it the same.

Ok so i completely forgot about this but remember Dragon Thralls? they were dragons who were corrupted by the taint and acted just like any other Ghoulified creature.
So Taint must work completely differently on the Old Gods to make them into these commander roles, and that also proves that they must be much more than dragons since Dragons (which are just young High Dragons) can become Ghouls.
Now i'm really curious about the interaction between the Old Gods and the Taint.
Are Old Gods resistant to it in someway?
Or is the whole point of the taint to Corrupt the Old Gods and the destruction of the world is just a side effect of that curse.
Why do old gods because monstrous commanders of the Darkspawn while other dragons just become ghouls? Why are the old gods so special?
and yes i know High Dragons are female and Old Gods are Male.

Well, Ghouls do retain their minds, and Old Gods are obviously more intelligent than the average Dragon. Not to mention that the Taint is very obviously targeting them for infection.

Yes but what makes them special? Because they are more intelligent? Male? what makes them gods and what makes the Taint target them unlike any other dragon which is also very very powerful?

Well, one part is that I think the Taint recognizes them somehow. It probably knows who sent the Magisters to the city.
As for why they're more intelligent and male... Well, they probably aren't just simply Dragons. Or maybe they're Dragons from a time when Dragons were something very different. At the very least, they're probably Mage Dragons.

Stahp it! You're gonna give me nightmares!
Ha ha ha ha.
Anyway, I've been wondering about that, too--the time before the Veil, when Dragons ruled the skies. Something tells me, if that part of Thedas's history is true, the Black City and the Elder One might factor into why the Veil exists today. That is, if the Elder One originally comes from that era.

Dragons are usually female so if a old god is a male dragon but not a drake and has a intelligence of a dolphin then the taint will make it into whatever it creates afterwards
But intelligence can't be what makes the Old Gods special to the taint. because if that was the case wouldn't it want to make smart ghouls out of human captains and commanders?
We have no real idea of the reason the taint targets the Old Gods. was it because of the first magisters who ran down to Dumat for what ever reason, and because of that it imprinted on the darkspawn that when they are alone they must find a Old God to worship? do they have a connection to the Black City? was the taint something they knew existed and would free them?
I mean we can assume during the first few years of the first blight the Darkspawn horde was mostly Ghouls. until they stole enough women and started making brood mothers. And we know the dark spawn didn't attack the surface immediately after Dumat was freed since Paragon Aeducan was battling them for a time and saw the main force gather and head towards the surface. so were the magisters even then digging for him or was he out already and knew they needed thousands to attack the surface.
The idea that they are dragon mage's in a sense does sound likely. I just want to know why they are so special to become "A Paragons of Darkspawn"
Its just a curious thing. And if they are the Forgotten One's why send Magisters into the Creators Home/Prison?
P.S I'm just spit balling ideas around.

Well, Ghouls mostly seem to retain some intelligence before they're too far gone, but you're right. But then, why are the Magisters special? Because they went into the Black City themselves? Probably.
Whatever the case is, the Taint does very much drive the Darkspawn to infect the Old Gods, though I'm not sure the Old Gods would want to be infected, even if it were in exchange for their freedom. Maybe the Darkspawn are just imprinted with ideas from the original Magisters, or maybe the Taint is inherently spiteful and seeks to make a mockery of those who invaded the Golden City and those who urged the Magisters to do so.
Whatever the case might be, I do get the feeling that the Taint has a will of its own, at least to some degree.

So anyone remember that the Inquisitor meets a Evil clone of himself in The Enemy of Thedas trailer?
The clone also say "More pain this time! The Elder One still comes!"
I wonder if the power the Inquisitor may be linked to the Elder One in some way which may explain why he sees a corrupt version of himself.
Maybe the Elder One is affecting the Inquisitor's mind slowly but he or she is more resistant to EO's influence which results in EO attacking Inquisitor's mind though a Evil clone.

Eh, I think that's just a Dream Sequence and we are fighting a demon who took our shape.

We've had long discussions about that doppelganger. Look at the door behind him. looks like blood going down the door as if it was rain.
