he could be one of the old gods that was awakened in the deep roads but not from the darkspawn cause if you think about it the dragon gods where the only ones who would want revenge from being kicked out of the golden city there is only two old gods left so it could be possible it is one of them cause would know if the maker was real or not 

And having the tevinter mages helping him makes sense as the old tevinter empire worshipped them and they could have gone looking for one of the old gods and found one.....

I know too many spoilers. Makes a lot of this discussion seem obviously misdirected, with debate over some things that I do know for certain.
 
Of course, there's always the possibility that the Elder One is secretly an abomination by the time of Inquisition... There's some evidence that it may be the case.
